March 14th ten years ago, marked the day that Thomas Lubanga Dylio was found guilty by the International Criminal Court (ICC) of the war crimes of enlisting and conscripting children under the age of 15 years and using them to participate actively in hostilities. About a decade later, former child soldiers of the Mujahedin Khalq (MEK/ PMOI) began speaking out giving their testimonies on how they were snatched and recruited by the agents of Massoud Rajavi.

In March 14th, 2012, the guardian reported, “The international criminal court has delivered the first verdict in its 10-year history, finding a Congolese warlord guilty of recruiting child soldiers. Thomas Lubanga was convicted of snatching children from the street and turning them into killers. He showed no emotion as the presiding judge, Adrian Fulford, read out the verdict.”

Thomas Lubanga

Lubanga was sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment. According to the ICC official website, on 15 March 2020, Thomas Lubanga was released after having served 14 years of imprisonment. Thomas Lubanga had used a rebel militia to dominate the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ituri region. “Children as young as 11 were recruited from their homes and schools to take part in brutal ethnic fighting in 2002-03,” according to the Guardian. “They were taken to military training camps and beaten and drugged; girls were used as sex slaves.”

Lubanga’s trick to coscript militia is very similar to that of Massoud Rajavi to recruit his Mujahed militia. About eight hundred children of Mujahed parents were first separated from their parents who were allegedly fighting the Iranian government in Camp Ashraf, Iraq. They were smuggled to Europe and North America where they were kept in team houses of the MEK or were given to fostering families, sympathizers of the MEK.

Today, after over two decades, former child soldiers have launched a campaign to defend their right to reveal their own experiences of being a child soldier in the MEK. Amir Yaghmai is one of the first former child soldiers of the MEK who spoke out about his experience of living under the abusive system of the Cult of Rajavi. In 2021, two other MEK-born children who are now in their thirties spoke out. Hanif Azizi, a Swedish policeman now, published his autobiography, “Suburban snout” in Swedish recounting his childhood in the MEK’s military camps. Amin Golmaryami was the third child soldier who was officially brought to the lime light of the Western media. His life story was published by the German newspaper Die Zeit in October 2021.

This was the start of a series of revelations by other child soldiers of the MEK. Sam, Mohammad, Ray, Arman, Saeed, Zina and other young defectors of the MEK who were once recruited by the group’s agents and transferred to Iraq, spoke out in the social media, in particular Club House platform. These former child soldiers were eventually labeled as agents of the Iranian government by the MEK propaganda.

Die Zeit’s journalist Luisa Hommerich who only investigated the cases of MEK children in Cologne, Germany, writes, “From the mid-1990s, some of their former teachers remembered that People’s Mojahedin children suddenly disappeared from Cologne. They suddenly stopped showing up in their classes, 14-, 15-, 16-year-old teenagers. A former teacher says today that he informed the Cologne Youth Welfare Office and the guardian Christoph Meertens about it.”

There were a lot more children, girls and boys who were smuggled from the United States, Canada and European countries to the MEK’s military headquarters in Iraq, Camp Ashraf. At least three hundred of the MEK’s children were coerced by the MEK agents to sign a recruitment form to join the MEK’s military force, called National Liberation Army (NLA), financially and logistically sponsored by Saddam Hussein, former Iraqi dictator. Their story is very similar to Lubanga’s victims. All of these children were under 18; they were whipped from school; they were forced to wear military uniform in Camp Ashraf; they were trained military trainings and even in cases they were forced to attend military operations or clashes. Former child soldiers of the MEK even exposed several cases of sexual harassment and child abuse by MEK agents.

Although former child soldiers of the so-called People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI) do not seek to sue the group leaders for the time being, Massoud Rajavi and his commanders can be hold accountable for crimes against children under legal age they recruited for the NLA. Today, former child soldiers of the MEK are determined to tell the truth as a warning for other people who are at risk of being trapped by extremist groups and destructive cults like the MEK. However, the international community must take it into consideration that the crimes of Massoud Rajavi against his own members, particularly the children of his own members are definitely blamed by illuminated public opinion.

As we have all heard, double-standard policies in the world are always adopted and enforced, and in many cases, these policies are simply overlooked by the international community and the media. In a general view, it may be possible to state that the main point according to this cliché that “the end justifies the mean”, which means, in some cases the reactions of Western countries in the face of two identical events that occurred in two different places are completely different and sometimes contradictory. In the present interview with Mr. Robert Fantina, we address a few questions about the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), which are an epitome of these inconsistencies and dual policies of the Western political community and media.

Robert Fantina; Journalist

Mr. Robert Fantina is a journalist and political analyst, and an author of wonderful books that you can find on Amazon. He’s working for peace and social justice. He writes extensively about US foreign policy and the Middle East, which focus on Palestine, he serves on the board of Canadian voices for Palestinian rights and Canadian for peace and justice in Kashmir.

JT: As you know, in the war condition when two countries are in conflict, if someone betrays his or her country, in most countries of the world, this person is sentenced to death. Does this law also apply in the United States?

– As you know the MEK betrayed their country during the Iran-Iraq war and massacred a large number of innocent people in their country. They even massacred hospital patients in their invasion to Iran, this kind of action which is also prohibited by international law is known as a terrorist act. What do you think is the verdict of these people in wartime?

RF: yes, it does. Treason, the act of being a traitor, is dealt with severely in most circumstances. Some countries have outlawed execution, the United States has not, and this is an option if somebody doing that.

The MEK is a terrorist organization that seeks the overthrow of the legitimate government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Their terrorist activities – the killing of innocent people – are well-known. Yet they receive support from some western nations, most notably the United States, because that nation’s government harbors an irrational hatred of Iran, and will support any organization, even a terrorist one, that opposes it.

The leaders of the MEK should be charged in the International Criminal Court with the many crimes they have committed.

JT: As you know, the money of the MEK has led to the non-observance of international law in Western countries, and as we have seen in the case of Asadullah Asadi, an Iranian diplomat with political immunity, was illegally detained in Germany and in a Belgian court, he has sentenced to 20 years in prison that this verdict violates the 1961 Geneva Convention, and now Mr. Hamid Nouri has been arrested by the Swedish police on a sham complaint and is on trial. On his trial, he had repeatedly stated that he had not served in the Iranian judiciary at the time due to the pregnancy of his wife, and another point was that Mr. Nouri was not a decision-maker in the judiciary at that time, Do you think that a person who did not appear in the court and did not even a decision-maker can be condemned on behalf of a government?

– As you know, the courts issue the verdicts according to the judicial laws of the same country. Do you think that a court in a European country or any other country has the right to decide on the rulings of the Iranian courts? If that were the case, would it not be better to prosecute the US and Saudi Arabian court judges who sentenced people to death, or an American police officer who pressed his knee against the neck of George Floyd for 9 minutes for being black and suffocating him?

RF: This is another case of western hypocrisy. If an official of any country is accused of a crime, there are international bodies, such as the International Criminal Court, that are responsible for dealing with the situation. One must consider, for a moment, if a U.S. official, say, for example, former President Donald Trump, was visiting a European nation and was arrested for the murder of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. Trump ordered his assassination, while the general was visiting Iraq. Several international laws were violated by Trump’s order. Yet he has not been held accountable. But if he were to be arrested for this crime when traveling outside of the United States, the U.S. government would condemn the nation that arrested him, issue sanctions, and possibly invade. Yet the U.S. supports the arrests and incarceration of Iranian officials outside of their nations. This double standard is typical of the United States. It also shows that the U.S. remains powerful, despite its decreasing influence on the world stage, because the ICC has not charged Trump or any else in the former U.S. administration for the general’s murder.

JT: A while ago, the representatives of the Albanian government intrusively entered the camp of the MEK and fingerprinted the members of the entire camp to present the citizenship identity card. As you know, when a member enters the cult of MEK, he has to hand over all his identity cards to the superiors of the group from the first day, and he no longer has the right to take them back, and he somehow loses his identity. According to recent investigations, a large number of members of Camp Ashraf in Albania intend to flee the group but have avoided fleeing due to lack of identity documents, but now that new identity cards are being issued and due to electronic version of these identity cards, those documents can no longer be confiscated by the group. For this reason, a large number of people will be estimated to leave this cult. Now, considering this issue, how do you assess the future of the MEK if it loses a large part of its members?

RF: Reports indicate a great degree of dissatisfaction among members of the MEK. It is one thing to disagree with some policies of a government; it is another to want to violently overthrow it. U.S. officials often speak about any protest demonstrations that occur in Iran as indicating that the people there want a new form of government. Yet in the summer of 2020, when millions of people demonstrated in the streets of major U.S. cities across the country, these same officials didn’t see the situation quite the same way. Some MEK members disagree with some Iranian government policies; no government will ever exist that pleases all its citizens. But following their involvement in the MEK, and seeing the mental and physical manipulation that membership in it involves, the MEK’s numbers will likely see a substantial decrease now that electronic identity cards have been issued.

JT: As you know, Albania has been a safe haven for terrorists for several years, and it hosts ISIS, MEK, and other terrorist groups, and the Albanian government made separate camps formed for each of these groups. What do you think are the reasons why a country like Albania is willing to turn its country into a safe haven for US-backed terrorists?

RF: The reason is simple: the U.S. has ordered it to. When the MEK was forced to flee Iraq, the U.S. government forced Albania to accept its members. The U.S. wants its terrorists physically united so that when the U.S. government wants to mobilize them to destabilize some nation that refuses to do the binding of the U.S. or Israel, it can do so with ease.

JT: The MEK ceremonies are usually attended by former American political figures, who give speeches and receive large sums of money from this group. These speeches have been legal since 2012 due to the removal of the MEK from the list of terrorist organizations, but with the regard that the group has a history of killing six American advisers, does the community of political, cultural, and social elites tolerate the presence of their politicians in these ceremonies?

RF: This goes back to what I mentioned earlier, about the irrational hatred that U.S. government officials have for Iran. The Iranian people overthrew the brutal U.S. puppet, the Shah of Iran. The newly-formed government severed ties with the Zionist entity and has offered stalwart support for the Palestinian people. It must be remembered that it is very expensive to run a political campaign in the U.S., and many U.S. officials rely heavily on financial contributions from pro-Israel lobbies. So if Israel tells them to oppose the JCPOA and support brutal and illegal sanctions, they will do so. The lobbies, not the citizenry, are their constituencies, and it is from them, and not the voters, that they take their orders. The fact that the MEK is responsible for the deaths of U.S. citizens is not important to these people.

JT: As you know, the corruption case of some American figures has been investigated these days, and even the issue of the presence and receiving money by Rudy Giuliani from the group of MEK has been included in the case of his financial corruption, which is being investigated by the FBI. In another case, John Bolton attended and spoke at a time when the group was on a list of terrorist organizations, which is considered a crime under US law. Now the question arises that what are the motives of politicians to cooperate with American killers? Is it just about money or something else?

RF: It is partly money, but also partly ideology. Iran is a mainly Muslim country; there is a great amount of hostility towards Muslims by U.S. government officials. Also, many U.S. officials, especially those that have been appointed by the current president, or previous presidents, are avowed Zionists. They will, therefore, do whatever it is that Israel wants, and Israel seeks to be the only powerful nation in the Middle East. Its main competitor for that title is Iran.

Additionally, especially during the disastrous Trump administration, there were many members of the so-called Christian Right in positions of power; former vice-president Mike Pence and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo were two among many. It must be remembered that the evangelical Christian movement has strayed so far from the teachings of Jesus Christ that he wouldn’t recognize them as Christian if he were to attend any of their meetings. These people support Israeli terrorism and see Islam as the arch-enemy of Christianity. I can assure you that that is not what true Christianity is about. Yet that is why many of these people embrace MEK and any and all enemies of the peaceful nation of Iran. This is a nation that hasn’t invaded another country since at least 1798; conversely, the U.S. has been at war for at least 227 years of its 245-year history, and most of those have been offensive, not defensive wars.

Officials of the U.S. government need to use diplomacy, and not discredited religious ideology in dealing with other nations in the world. This is a lesson they have yet to learn.

Dear Mr. Prosecutor,
I, Hossein Gharayeq Zandi, with the Red Cross no. 0693, was captured by Iraqi forces in 1980, and by 1990, with the entry of the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK, MKO, Rajavi Cult) forces into the POW camps and the false promise to send us abroad, we entered Camp Ashraf with a number of other prisoners from the Iran-Iraq war. But after a while we realized that all the promises of the officials of the organization were fabricated and we were not going to go anywhere from there.
I was in contact with my family in the Iraqi POW camps through the International Committee of the Red Cross. However, my contact with the family was cult after joining the MEK. In the MEK camps it was forbidden for us to contact our families.
At one point, I was imprisoned for 10 days in solitary confinement for opposing the leadership of the MEK policies. Later, I was interrogated many times for this and I was humiliated, insulted and threatened.
We no longer had any hope of living a free life and returning to our families in Iran. I once asked to leave the organization and my answer was severe punishment and imprisonment.
After the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, the situation changed and at this stage I again asked to leave the organization. This time I was imprisoned in solitary confinement. After that, I was able to leave the organization and enter Iran through a smuggler and be released.
In the MEK, no one had personal and social freedom and no one had the right to comment on the given instructions. We were practically slaves who only had to listen to what Massoud Rajavi said and execute them exactly.
I am now a plaintiff of the MEK leaders and I am ready to testify in any international court about the oppression we suffered in the MEK affairs.

Dear Mr. Karim Asad Khan,

I, Taha Hosseini, a resident of Arak, Iran, traveled to Turkey to find a better job and worked there. Unfortunately, the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK, MKO, Rajavi Cult) in Turkey deceived me and transferred me to Iraq with false promises. When I was transferred to Iraq, they took all my documents and made me nameless, and I had no way back.
I went through difficult days in Camp Ashraf in Iraq, which belonged to the MEK. I asked the MEK to transfer me back to Turkey, but I encountered severe punishment. The imprisoned me in a barrack. Then arranged a crowded meeting and incited the participants to assault me physically and cursing at me. After the meeting they took me back to the barrack. They threatened me with death.
Mr. Karim Asad Khan
The slogans of the MEK regarding freedom are false. There is no freedom in the MEK. They answer to any kind of criticism with violence. I have complaint against the criminal leaders of the MEK and I ask you to follow up on my complaint. I wish that the leaders of the MEK would be tried in an international court.

Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Karim Khan,

I am Hojjatollah Sattar, a former member of the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK, MKO, PMOI, Rajavi Cult) and one of the plaintiffs against the leaders of the organization who was captured by the forces of the MEK during the Iran-Iraq war.
I was in the organization for only one year but in just one year I grew old as if I were there for several years due to mental and physical pressures I suffered. During this one year of imprisonment, I endured hardship that is hard to believe for everyone.
I was a prisoner of war who should have been treated according to the Geneva Conventions on Prisoners of War, but that was not the case. I was never allowed to report my captivity to my family or to have my captivity registered by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
During this period of captivity in the MEK, I was always under the most intense stressful sessions of brainwashing and mind control. The leaders of the MEK sought to have my mind enslaved, just as they had my body in custody. To achieve such a goal, I had to attend their ideological meetings and, at the end, I had to express my opinion and perception of it. These meetings were held when I was very tired and exhausted after a tough workday.
In the MEK, members were allowed to leave the dormitory no later than 23:30. Not only me, as a prisoner of war, but also none of the members of the organization had access to any means of communication such as telephone, post, the Internet, radio, television, newspapers, and so on.
At that time, I had to receive the news from the organization’s own television because our only source of access to the news was the MEK TV channel, which was also selected for those who gathered in the public hall for lunch or supper at certain times.

Mr. Karim Khan
In the Rajavi Cult, marriage, having a family and children are forbidden. Even all members who were married were forced to divorce their spouses under Massoud Rajavi’s order, which is a clear example of genocide. They did not even have mercy on families who had children. At the behest of the organization, all children were forcibly sent from Iraq to other countries and were sold to families in those countries. The leaders did not want the children to emotionally influence on their parents.
This was a small part that I witnessed during that one-year period. Certainly, other members and defectors of the MEK have more documents to provide the court.
Please take our cases into consideration in the investigation of the crimes of the MEK leaders.

Sincerely,
Hojjatollah Sattar
A Survivor of the Rajavi Cult

To the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court

Dear Mr. Karim Asad Ahmad Khan
I am Abdollah Afghan from Mazandaran province in Iran. I am a former member of the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK, MKO, Rajavi Cult) who has complained against the leaders of this organization. I was a captive of the Rajavi Cult for 16 years in Camp Ashraf in Iraq. There, I was tortured mentally and physically.
We had no personal right. There was no newspaper, radio, television or the Internet at Camp Ashraf in the MEK in Iraq. We had no right to communicate with our family at all and our family was completely unaware of our situation.
At Camp Ashraf, only brainwashing, mental and physical stress, unpaid forced labor, and an uncertain future existed.
Hereby, I request you to follow our complaint and bring the leaders of the Rajavi Cult to justice. I am willing to appear in any court as a plaintiff or witness if necessary.

Thanks,
Abdollah Afghan

Dear Mr. Karim A. A. Khan QC,
The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC)

I am Hadi Shabani, a former member of the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK, MKO, Rajavi Cult). I was a member of the group for nearly two decades. (From 1985 to 2004)
I was shot in the abdomen in an operation called Forough-e Javidan, which was carried out by the MEK forces in cooperation with Saddam Hussein’s forces against the defenders of our homeland Iran. I regained my health after nearly three years; however, I still feel severe pain in the abdomen constantly.

The leaders of the MEK didn’t allow me to call my family and inform them of my health since I joined the organization in 1985. I was not even allowed to listen to the radio in the organization.
In 1988, a few months after Operation Forough-e Javidan, I witnessed that all men and women who were married were forced to divorce, and I, who was single, was not allowed to marry like other people. Massoud Rajavi stated in public meetings that marriage was forbidden for all members of the organization for the rest of their lives. The only one who had wife and family was Massoud Rajavi himself.
According to the doctrine of the MEK’s internal ideological revolution which was initiated by Massoud Rajavi, all women are married to him, and in this way he built a harem for himself while forbidding other men from even talking to their own wives.

Regarding psychological pressures, I must say that in the MEK, by conducting daily and weekly brainwashing sessions, which in cultic culture is known as “peer pressure”, they put pressure on everyone, and I, like everyone else, was under this organizational pressure. That is, there was a constant torture and repression in the relationship and no one dared to protest.
Massoud Rajavi constantly stated in public meetings that the members should forget about their family and no one should even think about them. We had to participate to daily and weekly sessions of confessions and declare all our thoughts and dreams in front of other members. The confessions were followed up by blame and psychological and physical punishments.

While the most dangerous prisoners anywhere in the world have the right to visit their next-of-kin, in the Rajavi Cult there was no right of communication with the family.
When I escaped from the MEK and went to the camp of the American forces called TIPF, I did not even have clothes to wear and the officials of the organization did not give me clothes and I spent a long time in TIPF without clothes. This was while I had spent all my youth in the MEK relations. I did not receive any money for years of hard work.
As a victim of the MEK, who lost his youth in the organization’s relations, I complain against the leaders of this organization. As a mind control destructive cult, the organization continues to perpetuate modern slavery and brainwashing members in Albania. I ask you to prosecute the leaders of this cult. I am ready to testify wherever necessary.

Dear Mr. Karim Khan,
I am Shir-Ahmad Rouzrokh, a resident of Golestan province in Iran, who was detained by the leaders of the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK, MKO, Rajavi Cult) in the Ashraf garrison in Iraq for 27 years.
I was first captured by Iraqi forces during the Iran-Iraq war. Due to the severe physical torture in the POW camp in Iraq and the harsh conditions there, I was deceived by the false promises of the MEK that came to the camp.
During nearly three decades that I was imprisoned by the MEK, I was subjected to severe mental and even physical torture by them. I was forced to do unpaid heavy physical work there, so now I have a blood clotting disease, which, according to the doctor, is due to the hard and exhausting work that I was forced to do at Camp Ashraf in Iraq.

Mr. Prosecutor
Now that there is an opportunity to handle the complaints, I would like to complain about the leaders of the MEK because of the mental and physical pressures as well as the irreparable physical injuries. I am ready to file a complaint am ready to testify in any court.

Thanks,

Dear Mr. Karim Asad Khan
Distinguished Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court

I am Hamid Dehdar Hassani, a former member of the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK, MKO, Rajavi Cult). I was present at the headquarters of this organization called Ashraf Camp in Iraq from 1987 to 2002. As you know, 42 of my friends who spent years of their lives in the MEK, recently filed a lawsuit against the leaders of the MEK on behalf of other former members in Branch 55 of the Tehran International Court of Justice. Finally, after the necessary investigations, a final verdict was issued condemning the leaders of the MEK. The case and the related documents were delivered to the Secretariat of the International Court of Justice in The Hague on 5 June 2021 for your consideration and follow-up. I am ready to testify in any international court in this regard.

Your Excellency,
As an eyewitness who has spent 15 years of his life in the MEK, I am ready to bring to you examples of crimes that the leaders of the MEK have committed and still commit against their members over the years:

1. All members of the MEK are deprived of their basic human rights, including the right to contact the family and friends, the right to marry and to form a family, as declared in the UN Charter of Human Rights.
2- Unpaid forced labor is continuously and extensively carried out by the MEK officials.
3- Those who wanted to leave the MEK were reprimanded by the leaders and subjected to the most severe mental and even physical pressures, and were eventually sent to solitary confinement in Camp Ashraf or to Abu Ghraib Prison in Iraq. I am a clear example of the fact that in 2001, when I asked to leave the MEK in order to pursue my life, the authorities sent me to solitary confinement after exerting severe pressure, and sometime later sent me to Abu Ghuraib prison.
4- I know many people in the MEK who committed suicide and self-immolation as a result of being subjected to psychological torture by the MEK leaders.
5- There is no freedom of expression and freedom of opinion in the MEK. Any expression of opposition to the orders of the organization has been and is prohibited.
6- In 2011, after forced divorces, the MEK officials forcibly separated hundreds of children from their parents in Camp Ashraf and displaced them in European and American countries. Parents never had the right to question about the fate of their children.

Dear Prosecutor,
I have hundreds of other examples of the atrocities and crimes that the MEK has committed against its members over the years. As a victim of the MEK, I urge you to prioritize the file of 42 former members against the leaders of the MEK. In the hope that justice will be done.

Thank You,
