On June 20, Nejat Society Albania held a conference dedicated to the promotion of human rights, transparency, and the importance of family connections. Former members of the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), Albanian members of the Society, Albanian citizens and social activists participated the event.

During the event, participants emphasized that all organizations, regardless of their political beliefs or objectives, should uphold fundamental human rights, respect individual freedoms, and ensure the right of every person to maintain contact with their family.

Nejat Albania reaffirmed its commitment to supporting families seeking communication with their loved ones and to advocating for greater transparency regarding the living conditions and personal freedoms of Iranian individuals residing in Albania.

The Society believes that democracy, freedom, and human dignity are strengthened through dialogue, accountability, tolerance, and respect for diverse opinions. Human rights should remain a universal principle that transcends political differences and ideological divisions.

Our message is clear: no political cause should take precedence over human dignity, individual freedom, and the fundamental right to family connection.

Let June 20 serve as a moment of reflection on the values of freedom, human rights, transparency, and solidarity with families seeking contact with their loved ones.

An American-Israeli social activist considers the MEK a terrorist group that will never change. In an article in Townhall, Jonathan Feldstein, an American living in Israel, called the MEK a fake Iranian opposition and described them as “wolves in different wolves’ clothing.”

Jonathan Feldstein is an American who immigrated to Israel in 2004. He has a three-decade career in fundraising and marketing for Israeli foundations. He is also an author who is considered a “respected” bridge between Jews and Christians, in Israel.

His piece is actually a response to a MEK agent who claimed that the MEK has changed and is no longer repeating its terrorist past. In response, Feldstein tries to acknowledge, while reviewing the MEK’s background, that the MEK has never changed to better; has no political or social legitimacy for Iranians and that this MEK “agent” is actually selling himself to clear the bloody record of his employers.

The Zionist author, Feldstein begins the article with a question about the MEK agent and gives a comprehensive answer:

Who is the “agent” selling out for, why, and why does it matter?

The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK) is one of the most prominent and controversial Iranian opposition groups. Founded in 1965, it evolved from a student-led Marxist revolutionary movement to an exiled organization advocating for regime change in Iran. Its history is of violent confrontations, forced exile, and robust international public relations and lobbying. It’s front organization, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) seeks to pasteurize its terrorist origins and position it as a legitimate player in the broader Iranian landscape.

MEK and NCRI are one and the same, a hand-in-glove relationship. Rather than a legitimate opposition, they represent a disgruntled and isolated – and very well-funded – terrorist group. They are nothing more than wolves in different wolves’ clothes. Sadly, there are many Western leaders who are in their pockets, literally, and others like their “agent” who are on the payroll.

When one speaks of the red-green alliance, the MEK/NCRI is the embodiment of that. They blend radical Islam with Marxist revolutionary ideology. MEK always emphasized armed struggle against oppression to achieve its goals. Massoud Rajavi joined in the late 1960s and rose to its leadership after the Shah’s regime executed the founders and other leaders.

In the 1979 Islamic Revolution, MEK supported Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. It gained popularity for its anti-monarchy stance and organizational strength. But they had a fallout with “Supreme Leader” Khomeini and, after being violently put down by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC), they turned to terror inside Iran, leading to a brutal crackdown against its members and supporters. Its leaders fled Iran to protect themselves.

Rajavi fled to Paris, establishing NCRI as part of its exiled underground network. It relocated to Iraq in 1986, allying with Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq War. This, and participating in the killing of Iranians in order to carry out their terrorist goals, alienated many Iranians and fueled accusations of collaboration with arch-enemy Saddam. Still today, MEK is wildly unpopular and viewed with hatred, as treasonous, by many Iranians.

Through the 1990s and early 2000s, MEK was designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S., U.K., E.U., and Canada. But after purportedly renouncing violence in the early 2000s, with no confirmed terrorist acts for which they took credit for over a decade, the West delisted it as a terror group. These decisions were driven largely by geopolitical considerations and challenges in relocating MEK members from Iraq to Albania. After all, nobody wants a terrorist group in their backyard, so a thick coat of whitewash, a slick PR campaign, and international declarations of “reform” made them suddenly palatable. Good neighbors.

But more than actually renouncing terror, the reversal was the product of well-funded intense lobbying, and a media smoke and mirrors scheme such as that which their “agent” is involved. It bears repeating that there are no known instances of Islamic terrorist groups truly renouncing their ideology or use of terror to achieve their goals. Pigs flying and hell freezing over are appropriate metaphors.

Today, MEK/NCRI supporters worship Maryam Rajavi, Massoud’s wife. He has been missing for two decades and presumed dead. They view her words as gospel, her ten-point plan for Iran as coming from Mt. Sinai. On the surface, they claim to support a plan for Iran rooted in secular democracy, gender equality, and without nukes. But follow Iranians in Iran and in the diaspora, and you’ll more often than not find them deriding and delegitimizing MEK/NCRI and Rajavi.

Further accusations of MEK/NCRI being cultlike are echoed in the absolute uniformity of “thought” that they present, minimally, as if they are reading from the same script, to, in fact, being brainwashed.

After a personal encounter that became a heated on-air debate with one of their speakers placed by the “agent,” I confronted their “agent” when I heard about him promoting them. “I heard you’re promoting NCRI. Is that correct?” Usually, a publicist helps clients formulate the talking points. In this case, the “agent” has been indoctrinated by the client.

After he admitted it, he pedaled that they are “former” terrorists, as if singing a John Lennon anti-war song, insisting “people change.”

I had a prior professional connection with the “agent” and challenged him, “I remember exactly where I was when you called me to ask about them. Your take on who they are and what they represent is mistaken. They are misleading you and the world. You’re being used. Shame that you are placing booking terrorists over integrity.” […]

The “agent” doubled down, “Former terrorist entity. There’s a difference. People change. They (MEK/NCRI) are better than imposing a King on them for the new regime. Ninety-four million mostly-Persian citizens deserve better than a King (aka Shah). Don’t you think?”

No, sir, don’t YOU think? Clearly not. Not as long as the Marxist-Islamist checks are being cashed.

It’s ironic to defend MEK/NCRI as democratic when the Rajavi dynasty has been in control since the 1980s. Her colorful hijab, as compared to the Islamic Republic’s preferred black, suggests openness, but it’s just a ruse to make you think they want democracy, secular reforms, and gender equality

The “agent” is pushing MEK/NCRI and Maryam Rajavi as an addicted drug dealer would do to fund his own addiction. Ultimately, the future of Iran needs to be decided by Iranians. But don’t let people like their “agent” and others pull the hijab over your eyes. MEK/NCRI are not to be trusted and, yes, the Iranian people deserve better.

During a rally of supporters of the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) in Germany, Maryam Rajavi’s bodyguards attacked a reporter from BILD magazine.

On Saturday, February 7, at the MEK’s so-called Free Iran rally held to mark the anniversary of the victory of the 1979 revolution, in Iran, Iman Sefati, an Iranian-German journalist who works for the German news outlet, Bild, was attacked and verbally abused by Maryam Rajavi’s bodyguards because of a single question he asked Maryam Rajavi.

A short question from the journalist turned into a crisis for Maryam Rajavi’s bodyguards. Iman Sefati was met with silence by the side of Maryam Rajavi for asking a question that criticized the background of the MEK, and her answer was replaced by an onslaught from her bodyguards. The question was: “Ms. Maryam Rajavi! What is your opinion about Saddam Hussein?”. The journalist referred to the group’s collaboration with Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq war.

The attack by Maryam Rajavi’s elderly bodyguards began with verbal abuse and labeling the journalist as Iranian spy. They tried to forcibly take the cell phones of Iman Sefati and his colleague, but they were unsuccessful due to the intervention of the Berlin police.

Along with publishing a video of the incident on his account, Sefati wrote to Maryam Rajavi and the speakers of the event on the X social network:

As a journalist, I just wanted to ask you some questions. A basic right in a democracy. Reaction: Kicks in the groin, blows to the torso, pushing and choking. Is this the group’s understanding of democracy, freedom of expression and diversity of opinions?

TEHRAN — In a series of high-precision operations, Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence has announced it has successfully dismantled several foreign-backed terrorist cells tasked with orchestrating “kill-and-blame” plots and conducting high-casualty attacks on security centers. According to official statements released on January 18 and 19, these groups aimed to exploit recent unrest to manufacture chaos and target both law enforcement and innocent civilians.

Vigilance and public synergy

The ministry underscored that public cooperation has been instrumental. In Tehran alone, over 300 key “field leaders” were identified and detained following reports from citizens via the 113 hotline. Similar successes were reported nationwide:
– Kerman Province: A six-member armed cell linked to the “Iran International” media outlet was captured in Rafsanjan and Sirjan. The group, which included four repeat offenders, was involved in attacking a seminary and firing on civilians.
– Khuzestan: Six ringleaders were arrested for the arson and desecration of the Holy Shrine of Sabze-Qaba in Dezful.
– Malard: The perpetrator behind the martyrdom of Officer Mohammad Javad Bakhshian was apprehended and confessed to the stabbing.

German-funded MEK sabotage

In another statement, the ministry detailed the arrest of two operatives in Tehran linked to the terrorist Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK) organization.

According to the ministry, these individuals were being remotely managed by a handler based in Germany, and the handler utilized cryptocurrency transfers to fund the purchase of weapons and safe houses.
Confiscated documents and confessions revealed that their mission included “setting fire to mosques and carrying out beheadings” to incite fear.
Authorities seized two Kalashnikov rifles, ammunition, and specialized communication equipment.
This follows the MEK’s own admission that it has played an active field role in the recent disturbances and terror attacks, acknowledging that 38 of its “insurgents” were eliminated in failed operations.

Thwarting the armed siege on Tehranpars

The Ministry of Intelligence also said it neutralized a terrorist team that had infiltrated Iran through western borders with the intent to commit crimes in the capital.
The cell was responsible for a sophisticated armed assault on Police Station 126 in Tehranpars on the evening of January 8.

According to the ministry, the terrorists fired over 850 rounds using military-grade weapons in an attempt to seize the station and loot its armory.

The attack resulted in the martyrdom of several police personnel, Basij members (volunteer security forces as part of the IRGC), and bystanders.

During the final operation to apprehend them, the terrorists opened fire on security forces; in the ensuing exchange, one gunman was killed, and four others were captured.

The ministry added that two intelligence officers from Tehran province were wounded but, demonstrating legendary dedication, “refused to leave the mission or rest until their recovery,” remaining in the field despite their injuries.

Iranian officials maintain that these events, which cumulatively have led to the death of a few thousand, especially from January 8 to January 10, are part of a broader “hybrid war” involving the U.S. and Israel.

The Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) claims that it has publicly stated a commitment to non-violent regime change since 2001, advocating for a democratic, secular, and non-nuclear Iran. However, reports and visual evidence, including videos attributed to their “resistance units” (Kanoonhaye Shooreshi), continue to depict activities that suggest a more complex and contradictory stance on violence. These videos often circulated on the group’s social media and channels, sometimes show individuals displaying weapons and expressing support for the MEK’s leadership and their struggle against the Islamic Republic.

Armed Resistance Units

While the MEK maintains that these “resistance units” are engaged in acts of civil disobedience and symbolic defiance, critics and some analysts interpret the imagery of armed individuals and explicit calls for overthrowing the regime as indicative of a continued belief in the efficacy of armed struggle, or at least a willingness to employ it if deemed necessary. The distinction between “resistance” and “violence” in this context remains a point of contradiction.
The perception of support for the MEK among Baluch Iranians in Sistan and Baloochestan, an area with active drug and arms trafficking is a complex issue. The region is also potentially at risk of Balooch separatists and so the MEK strategically makes efforts to exploit the existing discontent and instability in the region.

The MEK has a long history of leveraging ethnic and religious minorities within Iran to further its objectives against the Iranian government. The Sisitan and Baloochestan province, characterized but its porous borders, ethnic Balooch majority and Balooch separatists, and significant economic disparities, presents a fertile ground for such exploitation. The presence of armed group and criminal trafficking networks can also create an environment where alternative power structures, even those with violent histories like the MEK, might gain a foothold by offering protection or economic opportunities, however illicit.

Criticizing the MEK’s video that has been recently published showing some armed Balooch resistance units, Siamak Naderi, former member of the MEK writes: “The MEK published a video of Balooch smugglers who receive money under the guise of resistance units and the MEK’s Liberation Army inside Iran. These smugglers and even their literate head cannot read correctly from the text sent by the MEK from Albania and Ashraf 3. There is a ridiculous mispronunciation.”

Violent acts of “Resistance Units”

The MEK’s violent acts often involve actions such as setting fire to government buildings and religious centers. While the MEK frames these actions as acts of resistance and civil disobedience, the intentional destruction and damage of property are interpreted as violent acts and even terrorism. Such actions even if symbolic, contribute to violence.
From the perspective of the Iranian nation and many independent analysts, such acts are indeed examples of violent struggle and are considered terrorism. The historical record of the MEK’s use of violence, coupled with these actions, support this view. The scale of the MEK’s experience in acts of violence is undeniable, given its history as an armed organization.

The 40th court session examining the charges against 104 members of the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) as well as the organization’s nature as a legal entity, was held on October 7th, in branch 11 of the Criminal Court of Tehran Province, presided over by Judge Amir Reza Dehghani.

In this court, the plaintiffs’ lawyer said: The scale of the crimes committed by members of the organization cannot be described in a few documents, whether it is the young people who fell into the trap of the MEK or the parents who lost their children as a result of the MEK’s terror acts.

Maddah continued, “One of the crimes they committed was Operation Chelcheragh, a military operation carried out by members of the MEK on June 18, 1988.”

He said, “The goal of this operation was to capture the border city of Mehran, 100 kilometers from Ilam. After capturing the city of Mehran, members of the group looted the city, killed more than 8,000 Iranians, and took 1,500 people as hostage.
The lawyer said that the MEK calls its force as National Liberation Army. “Which liberation army in the world would storm a hospital and assassinate people from two-year-old children to young people, men and women?” he added. “A liberation army is supported by the people based on international law, while the MEK assassinated ordinary people.”

According to Maddah, intimidating, killing civilians, having illegitimate goals, lack of public support, and violence and resorting to force are among the most important definitions of terrorism in international law.

He said, “Liberation organizations in international law have special characteristics that distinguish them from terrorist groups. These organizations usually move towards their goals by observing the rules of war and international law and use legitimate means to achieve their goals, not by war crimes such as shooting and executing innocent people.”

The plaintiffs’ lawyer added, “The liberation armies are internationally recognized and supported by international institutions. In contrast, the MEK was recognized as a terrorist group in many countries, including the United States and Europe.”

Maddah notified that the MEK’s army stole a large amount of military equipment and tools that were to be used against the Iraqi Baath regime, in Operation Chelcheragh. The group even mentioned this issue in its newspaper, Mujahed.

“Since this action was a widespread act against national security and territorial integrity, the crime can be an example of corruption on earth,” he suggested. “Also, since they used weapons against people and created fear and insecurity, this crime can also be an example of war.”

The lawyer, on behalf of his clients asked the judge to take action to attribute the crimes of corruption on earth and war to all the leaders of the MEK who are among the defendants in the case and to issue sentences for them commensurate with these crimes.

A number of former members of the MEK including Ali Ekrami and Iraj Salehi also attended the 40th court in order to testify about what they witnessed in Chelcheragh.

Families of victims of Operation Chelcheragh took the stand and asked the court to bring MEK leaders to justice. The son of Asad Soltani, the sister of Salem Alipour and the brother of Mohammadi demanded revenge for the blood of their beloved ones who were killed on June 18, 1988 in the Mehran-Dehloran region.

At the end of the hearing, the judge announced that the next hearing would be held on October 21.

The Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) and Maryam Rajavi were once again the subject of Iranian anger and hatred at the top of Iran-related hashtags. Iranian users used the hashtag “MEK terrorists” tens of thousands of times within a few hours.
Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, Massoud Rajavi, in a message of congratulating the “heroic people of Syria,” referred to the Syrian government’s opponents as “rebel vanguards” who came to power for “freedom, justice, and a democratic revolution.” The Syrian rebels, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, bear many similarities to the MEK.

Like once the MEK was, HTS is designated as a terrorist group by the United Nations Security Council and is on one of the European Union sanctions lists due to its links to Al Qaeda. The US and UK governments have also included the group on their lists of foreign terrorist organizations.

In his message of December 8, Massoud Rajavi, the leader of the MEK clearly declares that the Syrian rebels are counterparts of the MEK and their so-called resistance units in Iran, and promises the early overthrow of the Iranian government – a promise that has been repeated for nearly five decades.

These similarities have not gone unnoticed by the MEK’s warmongering American supporters in the Republican party and their media outlet Fox News. It speaks of the opportunity of the fall of Bashar al-Assad to force Iranian regime change.
The Fox News article mentions some US Republican senators who support the MEK, who we have previously seen on the list of speakers at MEK rallies. These senators consider Maryam Rajavi to be the counterpart of Mohammad al-Jolani and the National Council of Resistance of Iran to be the counterpart of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham for changing the Iranian government.

The Fox News article is the beginning of the story. A Twitter storm broke out when Fox News published the article’s title on its X social media account, along with a photo of Maryam Rajavi. The post was met with intense anger from Iranian users across the political spectrum, and eventually the hashtag #MEKTerrorists trended on X English and the hashtag “Maryam Rajavi ate shit” on X Persian. Some of the comments and replies to Fox New, on the most popular pages are noteworthy. These posts, reposts or replies are a few of the contents that contain #MEKterrorists:

Mohammad Reza Torabi, a former child soldier of the MEK:
Down with Fox News and a bunch of money-loving Republicans and anyone else who promotes the Mojahedin or Rajavi. The reality is that this old woman and her criminal husband, who occasionally issues announcements from his mouse hole and has become a homeless rooster, have long been considered dead to the Iranian people. Nothing can bring them back to life. Today is the best time to say once again #MaryamRajaviateshit.

Salome Seyednia, host of Iranian TV channel, Manoto:
Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) is a terrorist group that has no credibility or support in Iran! They are very despised and have no standing among the Iranian people! Don’t waste your time on them!

Tina Ghazimorad, editor-In-Chief at manoto TV Newsroom:
That Fox News is promoting the MEK, a terrorist sect rooted in Marxist-Islamic ideologies, is completely absurd and beyond comprehension. Not only does it discredit you, it also insults the memory of Americans who once died. Before glorifying the leader of a sect with blood on their hands, do your homework and check the historical facts. No matter how much money they spend to sell themselves as “freedom fighters,” or how skillfully they parrot what you want to hear, their history of terrorism and betrayal is undeniable.

Sarah For Trump, Iranian-American X user:
What the fuck is this shit?
The #MEKterrorists are a bunch of Islamist-Marxist, undemocratic as*holes who force women to wear hijabs in their fucking cult. Their crap ideology screws over the U.S, Israel, and the Iranian people hate their guts.

Sarah Raviani, Iranian American X user:
The MEK is a terrorist organization that chanted “Death to America” and celebrated the 1979 U.S. Embassy seizure in Tehran after Iran fell to Khomeini.

Ali Hamid, Iranian documentary filmmaker:
To clueless U.S. politicians:
The MEK, which you support and normalize, killed dozens of Americans, including these servicemen. If Iranian lives don’t matter to you, respect your own victims’ families. Shame.

Niyak Ghorbani, UK-based Iranian user:
Supporting the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MEK), (OIAC Iran) is akin to supporting the terrorist organisation Hamas 30 years from now—a group that has always been an enemy of Israel and the Jewish people. The MEK, allies of Saddam Hussein and Yasser Arafat, and responsible for the killing of thousands of Iranian soldiers and civilians, will have no place in a free Iran of the future. Instead, they will be brought to justice for their crimes against the Iranian people.

Saeed Ghasseminejad, Iranian economist:
MEK is a Marxist-Islamist cult with American blood on its hand.

Hillel Neuer International human rights lawyer, writer, Executive Director of United Nations Watch:
Because I occasionally appear on FoxNews, I need to inform them: this woman Maryam Rajavi and her Mojahedin-e-Khalq (MEK) are a cult. Not a credible voice at all.

When the Mujahedin Khalq Organization (the MKO/ MEK/ PMOI/ Cult of Rajavi) was first relocated in Albanian territory in 2013, public opinion was instigated about the group. Rajavi’s cult was perhaps the first organization that had entered the country as a refugee, and was able to take up a place for the deployment of its members, from the very beginning. They had some special issues unrelated to normal refugees such as restrictions on cross-party visits to the city, restrictions on contacts with people outside their camps, uniformed clothing, the absence of any children among 2,000 men and women and etc…

By passing time, a number of members of the group left the group. The number of defectors has mounted to over 500 to this date. The disclosures on the human rights abuses inside the MEK that were made by former members and the fact that the group was listed as a terrorist organization by the European Union and the US Department of State, were was the reasons of the Albanian people’s cautiousness towards the Cult of Rajavi.
Besides, Americans’ support for the relocation of MEK members and the pressure on the Albanian government to receive members of the group, ultimately raised questions for the people of the country. Questions that were drawn to reports in Albanian newspapers and Internet websites, such as why these people were expelled from Iraq? Why does America act as a supporter of this group to resettle them? And if this group claims to fight against the Iranian regime, why they will not continue this fight in their country or around the Iranian borders?
The clashes of members of the MEK with defectors in the streets and daily news of the death of members of the group in the so-called Camp Ashraf three, increased the sense of danger regarding the group’s presence for the people Albania.

With the rise in the demands and questions by the people, which pushed the Albanian government to respond especially to the media, the group’s leaders began to take actions to reduce the concerns. These actions began with news and articles published in some Albanian media. Also, the group’s plans for communicating with Albanian people included the invitation of journalists and groups to have limited and controlled visit of their camp, free medical services to neighbors of the camp in Manez and providing a small financial assistance for certain people. This, of-course added other questions to the previous questions: What such refugee groups have such facilities or why and how do they provide such services?!

Under the orders of the leaders of the MEK, there were other activities to reduce the complication of the agenda, including the teaching of Albanian language to some members of the group in order to connect with people in the society as a direct advertising space to show off the group as an innocent entity to Albanian people.
However, with all the efforts of the MEK –which was like an operation for the group in Albania– a sense of distrust and danger was left for the people of this country about the presence of this formerly designated terrorist group with a dark background of terrorist acts and cult-like violence cult. They began to express concern at the stage of political demands to the Albanian government. In fact, today, the request for the expulsion of the members of the Cult of Rajavi from the country, along with demands such as political, economic and social problems of the people, are demanded from the government and the parliament of Albania.

In another words, the same fate that a decade after the collapse of Saddam Hussein happened to the MEK in Iraq, is waiting the group in Albania. The experience has shown that the awareness of people and then their demands to expel this intruder from their soil, as it happened in Iraq, will leave no other way for the Albanian government than the expulsion of the MEK

But this time, if the leaders of the organization are forced to relocate, it can be said with certainty that they will sign the decree of the complete collapse of their organization, because the experience of the other members will not allow them to once again decipher, deceive and resort to another grouping. This time we have to wait for the defection of the majority of the rank and file of the group in Albania, which means the loss of about two thousand forces of the cult of Rajavi.

After the blacklisting of army commanders, Iran urges action over ‘violations’ of its citizens’ rights by EU states.

In a strongly worded letter to the Council of the European Union, Iran formally protested against the blacklisting of several individuals and entities and what it says are European double standards on human rights in Iran.

The letter was written by the High Council of Human Rights of Iran – an entity under the country’s Supreme National Security Council currently headed by judiciary chief Ebrahim Raisi and comprised of several ministers – and handed to Portugal’s ambassador to Tehran Carlos Costa Neves as the country currently holds the presidency of the Council of the EU.

It comes in response to a move on April 12 by the EU to sanction eight military commanders and police chiefs, in addition to three prisons, for their role in a deadly crackdown of public protests in November 2019 that Amnesty International said led to at least 304 deaths.

The EU has now blacklisted 89 individuals and four entities as part of its decade-long human rights sanctions regime against those who it says are violating human rights in Iran.

In response, Iran’s foreign ministry said it will immediately suspend talks with the EU on human rights and all resulting cooperation, including that on “terrorism”, illicit drugs, and refugees. It also traced “political intentions” behind the move and said is considering reciprocal sanctions.

In its letter, the Iranian human rights council condemns the EU for its policies that it says are “enforcing the illegal and oppressive sanctions” unilaterally imposed by the United States after it withdrew from Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers in May 2018.

The sanctions, which intensified only after the COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020, have hampered imports of food and medicine, in addition to creating money transfer issues in buying coronavirus vaccines.

The letter says a number of EU member states have imposed “intentional damage on the health and wellbeing of the Iranian people, particularly children, women, the elderly, and persons with disability”.

For instance, it lists the names of more than a dozen children who died because of a lack of access to vital medicine to treat epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a rare medical condition that results in blistering of the skin and mucous membranes.

It also describes how several European countries refused to work or deal with Iranian firms on medicine, medical equipment, and vaccines, and says several airports have failed to provide services to Iranian passenger planes because of US sanctions.

The human rights council also condemns the fact that Iranian migrants and students have faced difficulties in opening bank accounts in European countries based on their nationality, and says several Iranian citizens are held in European prisons on “arbitrary” charges and have been mistreated in prison.

Moreover, it says the EU should have unequivocally condemned the January 2020 assassination of Iran’s top general Qassem Soleimani by the United States as a “clear example of state terrorism” that Iran believes was assisted by elements within the German government.

Among other things, the council also holds that a number of European countries continue to shelter members of the Mujahedin-e Khalq, which Iran recognises as a “terrorist organisation”, and provided Saddam Hussein with chemical weapons during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.

‘Double standards’
The letter is aimed at holding the EU accountable for its double standards on human rights in Iran, according to the deputy for international affairs at the Iranian council.

The letter is focused on two things: the violation of Iranians’ human rights by the EU inside Iran, and in European countries, Seyyed Majid Tafreshi told Al Jazeera.

“The Europeans who have so many claims on human rights are themselves the perpetrators of many human rights violations of Iranian citizens,” he said.

Tafreshi also said it is unfair that the EU directs the majority of its attention towards “following illegal sanctions imposed by the US” while ignoring the plight of Iranians inside and outside the country.

According to Tafreshi, the human rights council expects an “actionable response” to its letter, which called on the EU to “bring the violators of the fundamental rights of the Iranian nation into trial without any politicisation”.
It would only “strengthen Iran’s position” if the EU fails to adequately respond, he said.

‘Utter lack of knowledge’
An EU source told Al Jazeera the Council of the EU has yet to receive the letter, so it cannot comment on its contents.

Peter Stano, an EU spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, said it would be wrong to claim the EU has supported US sanctions on Iran.

“Quite to the contrary, the EU repeatedly rejected the unilateral imposition of the US sanctions and prevented US efforts under the Trump administration to reintroduce UN sanctions on Iran,” he said.

“And it was the EU that was always looking for ways to enable food and medicine supplies to Iran, especially in the context of the coronavirus pandemic. To claim otherwise is utter lack of knowledge and ignorance.”

Stano said the new European sanctions listings are completely unrelated to continuing efforts to restore the Iran nuclear deal.
“The EU supports a balanced, comprehensive approach with Iran through dialogue, with a view to addressing all issues of concern including human rights,” he said. “We are critical when there are divergences and cooperative when there is mutual interest.”

Talks on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in Vienna have been continuing for several weeks, with all sides saying progress is being made on lifting US sanctions and reversing Iran’s nuclear steps despite lingering challenges.

Attempts to sabotage America’s return to the Iran nuclear deal. When the United States (US) and Iran held a meeting in Vienna last week – Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility suddenly came under a power cut sabotage attack. Reports indicate that the Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency, was behind the attack.

The latest attack follows a number of explosions that took place across Iran last summer as a series of Israeli strikes in an attempt to derail negotiations – given that during the US presidential election campaign, Biden promised that if elected he would reinstate the US in the 2015 Iran nuclear deal or the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. (JCPOA) that Trump withdrew in 2018.

Iran, aware of Israel’s hard and open game, does not seem provoked to retaliate, including responding to the assassination of its top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, carried out by Israel using sophisticated weapons in November 2020 in the city of Absard outside Tehran.

Not only through attacks, high-ranking Israeli officials also went directly to lobbying the US Congress to cancel the agreement. This time, Mossad chief Yossi Cohen will travel to Washington to meet top White House and US intelligence officials, and hopes to meet in person with Biden to make sure that Iran cannot be trusted because it has hidden details about its nuclear program.

It is ironic, considering that Israel itself has never disclosed about its nuclear weapons and refuses to disclose any information about its program.

Apart from that, Iran’s enemies on American soil also did not stay silent to thwart Iran’s nuclear diplomacy. Like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the Israeli lobby group tried to convince Biden not to return to the JCPOA. Even last month AIPAC pressed the Biden administration using the hands of the House and Senate to demand an expanded deal that includes missiles, human rights and Iranian activities in the region. If the pressure is successful, of course Tehran will refuse to continue talks with Washington.

Meanwhile, the neoconservative think-tank Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD), which worked within the Trump administration during and after Trump withdrew from the JCPOA, has been relentlessly pushing for war with Iran. This came to light most clearly when former CIA officer and FDD colleague Reuel Marc Gerecht, speaking on CNN on April 11 voiced their disappointment that Trump had not led the US and Iran to war.

Then there is the Christians United for Israel (CUFI) group, one of the most powerful pro-Israel voices in the US that recently urged the Senate not to confirm Colin Kahl’s top policy position at the Pentagon, claiming “Kahl was the one driving the US comeback. in the Iran nuclear deal.

Do not miss the Mujahidin-e Khalq terrorist organization, abbreviated as MEK, which is known for its killings and bombings. This terrorist organization strongly opposes US-Iran diplomacy. In March 2021, a number of US Senators, including Senator Bob Menendez, the strong chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, attended a virtual event hosted by the MEK-backed Iranian American Community Organization (OIAC) calling for continued US sanctions on Iran.

fakhrIsrael, AIPAC, CUFI, FDD, MEK, Menendez, and similar groups probably really hope that Iran will immediately take revenge as often called by their top brass. If Iran takes revenge, it will certainly drag the US into a war it will not necessarily win. (Agus Setiawan)
