But he said he was open to \u201cideas being put on the table\u201d in forthcoming talks with Javier Solana, the European Union foreign policy chief, to resolve the nuclear stand-off. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-justify: inter-ideograph; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">Mr Larijani suggested that both the US Democratic party and the British were getting it right in Iraq. The Democrats\u2019 push for a timetable for withdrawal \u201cseems to be logical\u201d, he said, and the British were \u201cmore intelligent than the Americans\u201d, having made the \u201cnecessary adjustments\u201d and retreated to Basra airport. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-justify: inter-ideograph; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">\u201cIf they [the Americans] have a clear definition of a timetable we\u2019ll help them materialise it,\u201d Mr Larijani said. \u201cIf the US is persisting with its mistakes, it shouldn\u2019t ask for help from us.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-justify: inter-ideograph; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">The US has repeatedly accused Iran of undermining security in Iraq by supplying advanced roadside bombs and Iranian-made rockets to Shia militias. The US Senate last week called for the \u00adRevolutionary Guards, the elite force allegedly involved in Iraq, to be designated as a \u201cforeign terrorist organisation\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-justify: inter-ideograph; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">Political analysts say Iran\u2019s strategy is to back the Shia-dominated government in Baghdad but also to ensure that the US does not leave Iraq emboldened to carry on another military campaign. Three rounds of talks between US and Iranian officials have been held in Baghdad but do not appear to have produced tangible results. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-justify: inter-ideograph; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">Mr Larijani, however, dismissed US accusations as \u201clies\u201d. He said Iran had asked for names of Revolutionary Guard personnel that the US said were involved in helping Iraqi groups but that it had received no response. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-justify: inter-ideograph; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">He said Iran was the only country in the region to have supported the Iraqi government and the democratic process, while the US\u2019s allies \u2013 by which he meant Arab governments \u2013 provided no assistance and worked against Washington. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-justify: inter-ideograph; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">He also claimed Tehran had information that US officials were holding talks with Izzat al-Douri, the former Ba\u2019athist senior official who is said to be leading parts of the Sunni insurgency. \u201cThis is a disaster for the Iraqi people,\u201d he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-justify: inter-ideograph; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">At a time of growing suspicion that either the US or Israel will resort to military strikes to prevent Tehran from pursuing its nuclear programme, Mr Larijani said Washington\u2019s failures in Iraq should be a warning against embarking on a new \u201cadventure\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-justify: inter-ideograph; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">Refusing to specify what Tehran\u2019s retaliation might be, he warned that the US should attack Iran if it wished \u201cto receive Israel on a wheelchair\u201d and predicted that Washington would be \u201csticking its hand into a \u00adbeehive\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-justify: inter-ideograph; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">Addressing the nuclear programme, Mr Larijani said it had reached an advanced stage, providing Iran with a \u201cfull command of the technology\u201d that no one could take away. \u201cThis status cannot be ignored. I\u2019m surprised to hear [uranium enrichment] suspension is still being talked about.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-justify: inter-ideograph; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">On Friday six world powers failed to agree on a new UN sanctions resolution but gave Iran until late next month to curb its nuclear programme and are now waiting for reports from the IAEA and from Mr Solana. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-justify: inter-ideograph; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">Iran agreed with the IAEA a \u201cwork plan\u201d in late August, in which it pledged to clear up issues that have raised suspicions about its nuclear intentions. The deal encouraged Russia and China to block an immediate new round of sanctions but was criticised by the US and its European allies as vague and open-ended. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-justify: inter-ideograph; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">Mr Larijani said the agreement with the IAEA was not a delaying tactic.
