Why is Maryam Rajavi so hated by Iranians?

These days, admire and hope for the women of Iran is viral but not because of Maryam Rajavi. Given the history of the Mujahedin e-Khalq (MEK), the group is extremely unpopular. It is hated by both pro-Iranian govt people and anti-Iranian govt people. Basically, everyone in Iran hates them.

Maryam Rajavi, and her husband, Massoud Rajavi, are the joint leaders of the MEK also known as the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). Which all sounds very promising but the true nature of the group and its resume prove the opposite.

In 1979 the MEK supported the Islamic Revolution, only finally falling out with the Islamists a couple of years later. Whereupon they decamped to Saddam Hussein’s Iraq and fought alongside the Iraqi Army against Iran during Iran-Iraq War (1980-88).

Thereafter, until Saddam’s defeat in 2003, they conducted a terrorist campaign in Iran. They surrendered to US troops in 2003 who found themselves in the slightly awkward position of fighting a War on Terror while having to protect MEK which was, at the time, proscribed as a terrorist group by the US government and the European Union. The US interned MEK at camp Ashraf, Iraq and disarmed them. The Iraqi newly established government was determined to expel the MEK which considered an accomplice of Saddam Hussein’s regime. The UN eventually arranged for MEK to be relocated in Albania, Europe.

The MEK itself was and remains a weird and cult-like group, best known for a cult of personality around the Rajavis and imposing celibacy on its members, separating children from parents, isolating members from the outside world and many other cultlike attitudes that violate the rights of MEK members.

Maryam Rajavi wears hijab. Compulsory veiling (forced hijab) is one of the many rules of her cult. Removal of veils is forbidden under the rule of Maryam Rajavi although in her so-called ten-point plan for the future of Iran she claims to stand for freedom of clothing. She does not believe in free clothing. A look at the pictures her female followers who are isolated in a camp in Albania verifies that female mujaheds are not allowed to choose for their clothing.

The MEK is Islamist (with a dash of Marxism thrown in for good measure). It is not democratic. By all accounts, it once had a good intelligence network in Iran, but that was when it was based next door in Iraq, which it has not been for nearly two decades now. They might well be by now just another group of exiles, odder than most, with no particularly deep understanding of what is going on in Iran.

Baluchi separatists, MEK’s last resort to survive

Ignored by the Iranian society, the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) have to resort to any force which may help them survive on the Iranian political scene. Their propaganda focuses on the activities of their so-called resistance units and the latter focuses on Baluch separatists. The evidence can be seen in the MEK’s TV channel and websites.

The group’s propaganda websites routinely propagate the news of the resistance units in Sistan and Baluchestan province. The turbulent region where Jaish al-Adl extremist separatists operate and particularly, Zahedan. As the central city of the province, Zahedan is the MEK’s favorite location to recruit forces in order to launch violent acts.
What the resistance units are supposed to do is that they set fire and handmade bombs near religious, governmental and social buildings. Zahedan is the keyword they use when they talk about the activities of their resistance units.

The region is really hazardous. On December 15th, 2023, France 24 reported that at least 11 Iranian police officers were killed in a jihadist-claimed attack overnight on a police station in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan. Aljazeera, also reported that the province, which lies on a major opium trafficking route, has seen occasional clashes between Iranian forces and Baluch separatists, as well as drug traffickers. And, according to the Associated Press, The Sistan and Baluchestan province borders Afghanistan and Pakistan, and has seen previous attacks on security forces by ethnic Baluchi separatists.

The MEK has been neglected by the Iranian protesters and oppositions too. The “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement never embraced the MEK and its female leader, Maryam Rajavi, because they notice her undemocratic attitude inside her group despite her democratic gestures for the outside world. Iranians see that forced hijab is one of the many forced regulations of the Cult of Rajavi like forced celibacy, forced labor, prohibition of contact with the outside world and many other cult jargons.

Thus, the dictatorship of the Rajavis that rule the MEK has proved that “life” is not an option. Massoud and Maryam Rajavi have deprived their members from all aspects of a normal life. That is why they have changed the famous slogan of “Woman, Life, Freedom” to “Woman, Resistance, Freedom”. The message is very clear: The MEK does not support the aspirations of the Iranian nation. The group does not value the territorial integrity of Iran as it once sided with Saddam Hussein, Iraqi dictatorship who invaded Iran and imposed eight years of a bloody war.

Iranians slammed Canadian MPs who visited Maryam Rajavi

Maryam Rajavi, leader of the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) has been seen with two Canadian parliamentarians in photos in the social media. The Canadian Liberal Party MP, Judy Sgro, and former Conservative Party leader, Candice Bergen, were seriously criticized by Iranian and non-Iranian users for visiting who they call “the leader of the MEK terrorist cult”.

The post was published by Judy Sgro, on her X and Instagram accounts. The interaction of the post is more than anything based on comments. To this day, the comments that Judy Sgro has received for her photo with Maryam Rajavi and Candice Bergen is twice the likes and shares she has got. Skimming the comments indicates you why the post has become viral and has received such a number of comments by users who mostly condemned the Canadian politicians for seeking to make “a difference in the world” by cooperating with Maryam Rajavi!

Amir Yaghmai, former child soldier of the MEK who has recently appeared in the documentary “Camp Ashraf Children”, commented on Judy Sgro’s post:
Me and my friends were recruited as child soldier and sent from Europe to Iraq in the MEK cult. I advise you to make some proper research on the MEK before supporting them. And also, to see the new documentary “children of camp Ashraf” that is being screened in Sweden now.

Rouzbeh Hosseini, an associate professor in the John Munro Godfrey Sr. Department of Economics, in the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia, also commented:
What can I say? Very briefly and simply, you are grateful for the opportunity to take photo with Maryam Rajavi? A face abhor and spurn by the Iranian nation for all the betrayals to Iran. This does not give you any credit and as a matter of fact, it will result in deprivation of your credibility by supporting #MEKterrorists.

The hate is because, among Iranians, the MEK is negatively associated not only with its policy of regime change but also with its involvement in political assassinations following the Revolution and during the 1980 Iranian-Iraq war. The MEK’s decision to collaborate with Saddam contributed to the increased public opinion against it. According to the RAND Corporation think tank, MEK has conducted several raids across the border. The MEK received in exchange for its support of Saddam Hussein “protection, funding, weapons, ammunition, vehicles, tanks, military training, and the use of land and land.”

The MEK is a dangerous and violent group that has carried out numerous terrorist acts against both Iranian and foreign targets. According to a report by the Council on Foreign Relations, the MEK has a history of violence and terrorism that dates back to the 1970s. The report states that the group has been involved in bombings, assassinations, and other violent acts targeting Iranian and Western interests.

Numerous other reports and articles detail the MEK’s history and involvement in terrorist activities. The Guardian newspaper, for example, published an investigation in 2014 that revealed how the MEK had been involved in the killing of Iranian scientists.

The PMOI or People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, also known as NCRI or MEK, is a radical political Marxist – Islamic militant organization.

Mojahedin-e-Khalq was founded in 1965 by six radical Muslim students recruited by the Russian Marxist movement to overthrow the Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and create an Islamic republic. They based the organization in Lebanon to give their early members military training inside Palestinian Liberation Organization camps. They returned to Iran to fight against the Shah with guerilla attacks, assassinating and terrorizing hundreds of people over a decade.

After the 1979 Islamic revolution, in August 1979, Masoud Rajavi, the leader of PMOI, a totalitarian ideological organization, got into power struggles with Khomeini. PMOI refused to participate in the December 1979 Iranian constitutional referendum organized by the Islamic Republican Party to ratify the Constitution that the Assembly of Experts drafted.

[Ayatollah] Khomeini subsequently published a fatwa banning Massoud Rajavi and PMOI members from running in the 1980 Iranian presidential election. The PMOI could not win a single seat in the 1980 legislative election either. The group began clashing with the ruling Islamic Republican Party while avoiding direct and open criticism of [Ayatollah] Khomeini. They restarted the guerilla fight, but this time against their initial comrades in the Islamic Republican Party. As a result, a few thousand innocent lives, including women and children, were taken.

PMOI recruited teenagers and young adults as soldiers with its brutal Marxist Islamic ideology and cult-like regulations, then forced them to organizational marriages and divorces. Some female PMOI members have been ordered to surgically remove their ovaries to prove their commitment to the organization. Female militants are also forced to wear hijabs to comply with the organization’s Islamist ideology, so PMOI does not believe in freedom in any forms, including freedom of belief, speech, or appearance.

PMOI or its allies, including OIAC, have a tiny number of supporters. They do not believe in secularism but instead aim to reach a Marxist Islamic paradigm to control the people of Iran and the middle east for their demonic totalitarian demands. PMOI has been supported by those who never wanted human rights and peace for Iran and the middle east.

Victims’ families ask for full investigation of MEK crimes

Families of Iranian citizens who lost their lives during terror group’s attacks in the 1980s have called on Iran’s Judiciary to fully investigate the entity’s crimes and make a just and accurate ruling.

Victims’ families stated their demand prior to the first public hearing on the Mujahedin-e-Khalq’s terror organization’s crimes in the Iranian capital of Tehran. The trial reportedly addresses the conduct of group’s main ring leaders.

“Unfortunately, the MKO has not been tried in any domestic or international court so far, and have never been held accountable for their lifetime of inhumanity, betrayal, and crimes. Instead, they freely move around in European countries (the self-proclaimed supporters of human rights) and are even based in many of them,” the families said in a joint statement.

The MKO has conducted numerous terrorist attacks against Iranian civilians and government officials following the Islamic Revolution’s triumph in 1979. Within the past four decades, close to 17,000 Iranians have been killed in terrorist incidents, with around 12,000 falling victim to the MKO’s brutal acts of terror, which tragically also targeted innocent women and children.

Notably, the European Union, Canada, the United States, and Japan had previously designated the MKO as a “terrorist organization.”

In 2012, the group was delisted from the U.S. roster of terrorist organizations, signifying Washington’s decision to engage with the notorious terrorist group in efforts aimed at undermining the Islamic Republic of Iran. Subsequently, the EU also removed the organization from its list of terrorist entities.

The group, however, has come under growing pressure in the past year, with Western countries deeming it dangerous for their own security as well.

The MKO, which was initially based in Iraq after fleeing Iran, had its headquarters raided by Albanian Police in June. Albanian authorities, who had been hosting the group under a US-brokered deal since 2016, accused the entity of “terror and cyber-attacks” against foreign institutions. They also imposed entry bans against MKO’s main ringleader, Maryam Rajavi.

The terror organization is now reportedly looking to relocate by transferring its members to Canada and Germany.

MEK responsible for over 100 acts of terror against Iran

The Iranian Judiciary spokesperson says the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) has carried out more than 100 acts of terrorism and betrayal against the Iranian nation over the years.

Masoud Setayeshi made the remarks at a press conference on Tuesday on the sidelines of the seventh trial session for members of the exile terrorist group.

“The Judiciary, in accordance with legal standards, is effectively responding to the public demand,” he said. “In this case, the crimes and acts of terrorism by the central figures of this terrorist group, accompanied by numerous complaints and witnesses, are being addressed.”

The official said that the majority of the crimes and atrocities committed by members of the MKO terrorist group include the murder of ordinary people, including women and children.

“Additionally, the close relationship that this terrorist group had with the oppressive Ba’ath regime (in Iraq) and the Zionist regime in various fields has been presented with documented evidence in the court,” he added.

Setayeshi further said that the Judiciary has made sure that all the defendants in the case have access to legal representation.

The MEK do not hesitate to kill civilians; MEK victim says

Mohammad Mehdi Chizari, a victim of the terror attacks of the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), said that in addition to losing his leg, he is still suffering from the damages of shrapnel left in his body after the mortar attacks committed by the group agents.

In an interview with Mizan news agency, Mohammad Mahdi Chizari, said, “I was seriously injured at 13:30 on March 23, 2018, following a mortar attack by members of the MEK terrorist group on the Noor residential complex located on Niayesh Street in Tehran.”

“Referring to the fact that at the time of the explosion, I was a supervising engineer at one of the municipal buildings”, he said. “I was hit by shrapnel from 5 mortars, which caused me to lose my left leg above the knee, and my right leg was also seriously injured. In addition, 75 fragments of these mortars hit different parts of my body and caused injury.”

This terror victim stated that the MEK uses every opportunity to commit treason and crime in order to disrupt peace in the Iranian nation, and said, “They are trying to serve super powers like the United States and some European countries. And committing crimes like the incident that caused my injury is one of the services they offered their masters.”

Chizari emphasized that the Mujahidin did not hesitate to kill and injure innocent people in the alleys and streets, and they are even proud of it.

“Pointing out that I was waiting for justice from the very beginning”, he added. “The holding of this court makes the people of Iran happy, especially the victims of terror and their families.”

Chizari expressed hope that the prosecution of the leaders of the MEK, will be completed as soon as possible and that the material and moral damages caused to the terror victims and their families will be compensated in the best possible way. He stated, “We are very hopeful about this; God willing, when the outcome of the court is determined, the leaders of the MEK terrorist group will be punished for their actions.”

The trial time

Finally, its time for a trial for terror-lined treason, domestically. And for human rights violations, internationally. Iran is calling for this, and within its own borders it held a hearing for MKO crimes.

The MKO or MEK is termed the Monafeqin in Iran, meaning the Hypocrites. The official trial-in-absence of the defendants, MKO chiefs, held today 21 Azar / 12 Dec 2023.

Iranian Terror Victims’ Families Await Historic Trial of MKO Terrorists

The highly anticipated trial of 104 members of anti-Iran Mojahedin-e Khalq (MeK or MKO) terrorist group is set to commence in Tehran on Tuesday, marking a significant moment for thousands of Iranian families seeking justice for decades of terror-induced agony.

After more than four decades of expectation by several thousand families of Iranian terror victims, the first session of the historic trial of 104 members of the terrorist group is scheduled to be held in Tehran on Tuesday, December 12. However, it seems that this event is more important for this group which is responsible for those horrible acts of terror in the country.

Since the day the Iranian judicial authorities announced they planned to prosecute fugitive members of the MKO, hysterical reactions were seen from this terrorist group, which indicates the extent of their worry regarding the consequences of this trial. As the most recent example of this hysteria, the MKO announced via its official media that it has called its members to carry out 100 terrorist operations in different parts of Iran as a reaction to the trial.

Following the MKO’s forced disarmament after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 and fall of Saddam Hossein’s regime, the main supporter of the group, it has attempted to portray itself as a democratic group that advocates a peaceful regime change in Iran in an effort to deceive some Western politicians.

Activation of the MKO’s terrorist cells known as “rebel centers” in the country reveals how fake its democratic and peaceful slogans are. However, perhaps no event could arouse this hysteria among the MKO other than holding an unprecedented and historic trial about their crimes during the 80s and killing of thousands of innocent civilians through bombing and armed activities, to the extent that they have called for 100 terrorist acts to be carried out in the country.

Undoubtedly, a nation that has put behind such a harsh and cruel period not only will not give up on the prosecution of the murderers of its children, but it will be more determined to do such actions in order to shed light on the nature of this terrorist group for the world public opinion.

UNESCO researcher: MEK does not have widespread public backing in Iran

While the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) claims that its so-called “resistance units” are active all over Iran to push the overthrow of the Iranian government, independent researchers and journalists have always stated that the group lacks public support in Iran.

Zaynab Malakouti Khah is an Iranian researchers at UNESCO Chair for Human Rights, Peace and Democracy of Shahid Beheshti University. She graduated from Iran in 2012 with a First-Class in Law and obtained an LLM in International Human Rights Law at the University of Reading, UK. She has published several articles and a book on human rights, international law, Counter-Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism Financing.

In September 2018, her article titled “Iran: Sponsoring or Combating Terrorism?” was published by Studies in Conflict and Terrorism journal. In a part of the article under the subtitle “Iran as a victim of terrorist attacks”, the author presents a fairly comprehensive and independent outlook on the MEK. The following is that part proceeded by its references:

Following the Islamic Revolution of 1979, various groups opposed Ayatollah Khomeini. The leading opposition group was the Mojahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), with a background in Marxist and Islamist interpretations. The MEK survived the test of time and developed into the most disciplined armed organization opposing the Islamic Republic.23 The MEK was established in 1965 in opposition to the Shah and the United States. It targeted U.S. civilians and military personnel, supporting the U.S. embassy hostage-taking in Tehran.24 Following the 1979 Revolution, although the MEK first endorsed Ayatollah Khomeini, they later attempted to overthrow the government but failed and fled to Paris and then Iraq.25 Members of MEK sought refuge in Camp Ashraf near the Iran–Iraq border and were financially and militarily supported by the regime of Saddam Hussein, the former leader of Iraq. From 1980 to 2003 (when MEK’s weapons were confiscated by the U.S. intervention mission in Iraq),26 they carried out several terrorist attacks in both Iran and on Iranian interests in other countries.27 Selected attacks by the MEK included the bombing of the Islamic Republic Party Headquarters (1981), which led to the death of approximately seventy high-ranking officials; attacks on diplomats (1987 and 1994); an explosion in the Imam Reza Mausoleum (1989); attacks on thirteen Iranian embassies around the world (1992); the Presidential Palace; the Defense Ministry and military bases (2000);and a motor attack on the Supreme Court and other governmental buildings (2001).28

In retaliation, the MEK’s members were executed in prison,29 the total execution toll is difficult to estimate[..]. The MEK had been designated as a terrorist group by the United States,33 United Kingdom,34 and European Union (EU). However, it was removed from their blacklists in 2012, 2008, and 2009, respectively, due to the curtailment of terrorist activities.35 Iran condemned the delisting of the MEK and highlighted the Western double standards on terrorism.36 The Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, condemned the U.S. methods of separating “good” and “bad” terrorists, asserting that this “shows terrorism is bad if terrorists are not America’s servants, but if terrorists become America’s servants, then they are not bad.”37 The supporters of the MEK still believe that the organization is capable of replacing the current regime,38 and it continues to have some powerful Western supporters.39 Regardless of the U.S. and the Western support for the MEK, 40 as a group that carried out terrorist activities, it does not have widespread public backing in Iran. They have killed dozens of civilians, and a Human Rights Watch report indicates violations of human rights inside the organization, ranging from detention of its members who wish to leave the organization to torture. 41

In 2009, the EU removed the MEK from the terror list because of the lack of two conditions for being a terrorist group, including “serious and reliable evidence or clue” (Article 1(4) of the Common Position 2001/931/CFSP), and “committing, or attempting to commit, practicing in or facilitating the commission of any act of terrorism” (Article 2(3) of the Regulation 2580/2001).
