RT: Lobbyist in Capital Hill with pockets stuffed with MEK’s money

Royals V. MEK
The Alyona Show on RT – Russian English –Language news Channel suggests the US media focus on the “Lobbyist in Capital Hill with pockets stuffed with MEK’s money”, on July 9th. The show criticizes US officials’ hypocrisy and double-standard to sell the cause of terrorists. Comparing MEK with Al-Qaida the show poses the question that how a terrorist designated organization can be debated in a hearing held in the US congress.

War With Iran? US Neocons Aim to Repeat Chalabi-Style Swindle

In 1991, Iraqi exiles set up the Iraq National Congress (INC) with funding from the CIA. Under the leadership of Ahmad Chalabi, and flush with tens of millions dollars in US government funding, the INC allied itself with the neoconservatives in Washington and unceasingly beat the drums of war, presenting itself as the popular democratic alternative to Saddam Hussein and feeding

Former United States Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton speaking at CPAC 2011 in Washington, DC. faulty intelligence to an eager media and Bush administration. Eventually, they succeeded in dragging the United States into disastrous war that cost Americans and Iraqis their lives and caused incalculable damage to American prestige and power.

Now, history may be repeating itself.

A segment of our political establishment that is chafing at the bit for a military attack on Iran has found their INC, in the form of the Mujahedin-e-Khalq Organization (also known as the MEK, or MKO), a radical Islamic terrorist group with Iranian roots that has been designated a terrorist organization since the State Department created the Foreign Terrorist Organization list in 1997.

Appearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on June 24, John Bolton, the former ambassador to the UN under President Bush, reiterated his calls for military action against Iran and openly expressed his support for the MEK. Weeks later, former Bush attorney general Michael Mukasey appeared before the Oversight and Investigation Subcommittee and called for the US to delist the MEK. Mukasey was even photographed prior to the hearing receiving counsel from the leadership of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, the MEK’s political wing, which is also designated as a terrorist organization.

Bolton and Mukasey are not alone in their avowed public support for this known terrorist group. They have been joined by a number of former senior Bush administration officials, other hawks and advocates of the whatever-it-takes war on terror – luminaries such as Rudy Giuliani, former CIA director James Woolsey, and former head of Homeland Security Tom Ridge, as well as a number of Republican and Democratic legislators.

Why would some of the most vocal advocates for prosecuting the war on terror now take an Islamic terrorist group under its wing and persistently lobby the State Department and the US Congress to have the group removed from terrorist list? Simply put, they say the enemy of the enemy is our friend. Maryam Rajavi, the MEK leader and self-proclaimed president of Iran, is their new Chalabi.

The MEK is an Islamic radical organization that was formed in the 1960’s as an urban guerilla movement against the shah of Iran. During the 1970’s, the group targeted and successfully killed US military personnel and American civilians based in Iran. It played a major role in the overthrow of the shah in 1979, eventually fell out with the Ayatollah Khomeini and fled to Iraq. There, they regrouped under the patronage of Hussein, and fought alongside him against Iran in the Iran-Iraq war. As documented by the CIA, the MEK was later used by a beleaguered Hussein to crush the Kurdish rebellion that came immediately after Iraq’s defeat in the Persian Gulf War. Following Hussein’s ouster, the Iraqi government has been working to try to expel the reviled group from Iraq.

Over the course of the last two decades, a well-funded MEK has developed a powerful propaganda machine that has sought to depict the group as a formidable military force, as well as the genuine democratic representative of the Iranian people. These claims have been proven to be groundless. The naked reality is that the MEK are neither a force nor a democratic representative of Iranians, but simply a well-funded militaristic cult with shadowy leaders. They are widely despised by Iranians for having betrayed Iran by siding with Hussein. These facts have been extensively documented, as can be seen in a recently released FBI report that presents evidence of ongoing terrorist activities by the MEK.[..]

Pressure to remove the MEK from the State Department’s Foreign Terrorist Organizations list is a cynical ploy by the neocons that can have only negative consequences for both the United States and Iran. It would allow an Islamic radical terrorist group to operate freely in the United States and eventually get funded by the US taxpayer, courtesy of a clueless Congress. The proponents of war with Iran simply want another INC, and another Chalabi, to promote and start a military conflict with Iran. This country does not need another war, and we need not make that mistake once again.

Instead of legitimizing the MEK, we call on the law-enforcement agencies to investigate the illegal activities of this group, their funding and their allies. After all, they are still on the US State Department terrorist list. So, why are they allowed to lobby our lawmakers in the Senate and the House? The FBI should treat the MEK like all others terror-listed groups, and help protect the American people from these terrorists in our midst – and from another attempt to hijack the country and steer us into a disastrous war of choice.

The cult of Rajavi

Prayer is unacceptable without pictures of MKO gang leader!

According to an inter-sectarian directive, which has been executed in the Rajavi’s cult for 25 years, the cult members should pray in a place where several pictures of the cult leader are mounted.

As reported by Habilian Association (families of Iranian victims of terror) database, according to Hussein Robubi, a member of the Executive Board of MKO, after he was appointed as an official for a terrorist base of MKO in Pakistan, immediately he was assigned to mount pictures of MKO leader (Masoud Rajavi) wherein the cult members say prayers.

According to news received, Hussein Robubi explains his action to implement the order of Rajavi in such states: “When I came to Pakistan, I saw only two or three pictures of Rajavi was mounted in the database. This showed that how Mahmood was preventing from shining of the light of leadership. So, I demanded to send us the pictures, as much as possible.”

Reported by Habilian Association database, also two former members of the cult say: “Robubi recommended personnel to mount Rajavi’s photo in every room; also he rose at the meetings that, According to Rajavi, if a Mujahed say prayer in a room, where there are not leadership’s photos, so his prayer would be unacceptable.”

The MEK Expulsion from Iraq

Iraqi ambassador: Iraq to expel terrorist Mojahedin Khalq soon

Iraqi Ambassador to Tehran Mohammad Majid al-Sheikh said on Wednesday that terrorist Mujahedeen Khalq Organization refugees stationed in Iraq camp will be expelled by the end of this year.

In a meeting with Managing Director of the Islamic Republic News Agency Ali Akbar Javanfekr at Iran Press and Cultural Instititue, the ambassador said that the Iraqi government has acknowledged its decision to expel the refugees to the international organizations responsible for settlement of the refugees.

The ambassador said that the Iraqi government has also raised the issue with the European Union.

Al-Sheikh said that the terrorist MKO refugees were given a camp under the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein when they were serving under the then Iraqi army command to crack down Iraqi opposition in southern Iraq. ‘So, the new Iraqi government set a deadline for them to leave Iraq.

“The Iraqi leaders have consulted with EU over the MKO refugees and maintained that Iraq can not tolerate presence of the terrorists in the Iraqi territory,” the ambassador said.

“We also discussed the subject with Iran and the Red Crescent Society to help get rid of the terrorists who have been involved in violent crackdown of the opposition in 1990s under Saddam Hussein. So, the Iraqi government can not control its citizens’ revenge for collaboration with the former dictator in killing the Iraqi people,” he said.

The Iraqi ambassador added that Iraqi government and nation will not allow any terrorist group such as MKO or terrorist PEJAK group to use Iraqi soil to attack the neighboring and friendly country as Islamic Republic of Iran.

Congressional Leaders Voice Support for MEK Violence

Supporters of removing the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) from the U.S. terrorism list convened a hearing on Capitol Hill last week in which they justified the MEK’s use of violence and even cult-like behavior in support of toppling the Iranian regime.

Ali Safavi, a senior member of the MEK’s political wing, the National Council of Resistance in Iran (NCRI), coached witnesses before and during the hearing. The NCRI is designated as a terrorist affiliate of the MEK.

Washington, DC – Congressional supporters of the drive to remove the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) from the U.S. terrorism list defended the organization’s use of violence at a hearing on Capitol Hill last week. The hearing was also remarkable in that senior leaders of the designated foreign terrorist organization were caught counseling some of the witnesses before the hearing. It is illegal to coordinate with a foreign terrorist organization to advocate on behalf of the terrorist group.

Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, compared the use of terrorism by MEK to violence employed during the American Revolutionary War. He justified the “cult-like” behavior of the MEK, saying American revolutionaries included "religious fanatics and Christian cults.”

Rohrabacher called for the MEK to be removed from the Foreign Terrorist Organization list, which

Alireza Jafarzadeh, who has served as NCRI spokesman, counseled former Bush Attorney General Michael Mukasey prior to his testimony.

prevents the group from receiving government funding and makes it illegal for MEK to operate in the U.S. "Any group that chooses to use violence to resist doesn’t make them right or wrong,” Rohrabacher stated. “Backing people who fight against tyranny is also something the U.S. should be doing.”

Despite the terrorist listing, Ali Safavi, a senior member of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, was at the hearing, where he openly counseled witnesses before and during their testimony. The NCRI is the MEK’s political wing and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. government.

The hearing’s witnesses included three former U.S. officials who have actively participated in pro-MEK conferences, including former Bush Administration Attorney General Michael Mukasey.

All three witnesses who previously appeared at MEK conferences unanimously called for the MEK to be removed from the terror list, though none were asked to disclose whether they had received money to support the organization, as have other officials who have advocated for delisting the group.

The lone dissenting voice among the witnesses, former Obama Administration advisor Ray Takeyh, was subjected to an intense back and forth with Representatives on the panel.

Individuals wearing yellow jerseys featuring pro-MEK slogans filled the hearing room to capacity.

Takeyh warned panelists who viewed MEK as a viable alternative to the Iranian regime that the organization has no support in Iran.

“I don’t agree," responded Representative Bob Filner (D-CA). "Even if you’re right, so what?”

Filner laughed off evidence that MEK President Maryam Rajavi is a cult leader, despite reports from the State Department and FBI of “cult-like” practices by MEK that include indoctrination rituals and torture. "She is as intelligent, humorous, humane and humble as anyone I’ve ever met," Filner observed, recounting what he said have been numerous meetings he has held in Paris with Rajavi.

Filner accused Takeyh of justifying violence against the MEK by highlighting the group’s history of terrorism, and said the U.S. should be supporting the organization as a “third way” alternative in Iran because it opposes the Iranian regime.

“These are our friends! We should be getting out of their way and de-list them,” Filner exclaimed. “Let them do what they can! Why are we helping Iran by not helping the MEK?”

Rohrabacher defended the MEK’s history of violence, saying, “This is a territory that’s filled with violence—I would be surprised if there wasn’t any organization that wasn’t in some way involved with using force to protect themselves.”

"Oh I would disagree with that," responded Takeyh. "Within Iran there are many opposition movements, such as the Green Movement, that explicitly reject violence.”

But Rohrabacher was adamant in his support for MEK. “I will have to admit the thing that attracts me to this movement is that it is willing to fight," he responded. “It won’t just be pacifists," Rohrabacher said, referring dismissively to the Green Movement, "it will be people with courage and people who stand up.”

Mukasey, in addition to calling for the MEK to be removed from the terrorism list, urged that MEK members be allowed to resettle in the United States. Mukasey acknowledged that members of terrorist organizations are legally barred from entering the U.S., and suggested legislation be introduced to change the law for MEK members.

Prior to the hearing, Mukasey was witnessed receiving coaching from Alireza Jafarzadeh, who served as the official spokesman for the NCRI before it was declared a terrorist group and its offices raided by the FBI in 2003.

Meanwhile, many were turned away from the hearing or sent to the overflow room to watch the proceedings because the hearing room was at capacity. It was filled with individuals in yellow jerseys emblazoned with the slogans, “De-list the MEK,” “Protect Ashraf,” and “Ramp up sanctions.”

Iran criticizes US support for MKO

A senior Iranian military figure has lashed out at the United States for its support for the presence of the terrorist group Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) on Iraqi soil.

Head of Iran’s Sacred Defense Foundation General Mohammad Baqerzadeh on Sunday criticized Washington for its support for the presence of MKO terrorists in Camp Ashraf in Iraq’s eastern province of Diyala.

“Continuing to support MKO presence in Iraq after this group has been recognized as a terrorist cell in the world shows US support for the existence of terrorist movements,” Mehr News Agency quoted him as saying.

General Baqerzadeh said US support for the MKO comes despite the fact that terrorism and terrorist acts are condemned around the world, adding, “This is an example of the West’s double standards with regards to human rights and this issue must be broached in the international community.”

“This terrorist cell has committed crimes not only against the people of Iran but also Iraqis … therefore the people of both countries can reserve the right to pursue efforts to bring the MKO to justice.”

The MKO fled to Iraq in 1986, where it enjoyed the support of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, and set up Camp Ashraf near the Iranian border. The group has been actively involved in the assassination of Iranian officials and civilians and also helped the massacre of Iraqi Kurds in 1991.

The European Parliament, which removed the MKO from its blacklist in 2009, issued a declaration in November 2010 and urged the US to take the group off its list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

The MKO, which has been on the US terror list since 1997, filed a petition against the blacklisting in 2008.

The administration of former US president George W. Bush rejected the request in its final days in 2009, after examining material submitted by the group and US intelligence agencies, including classified information.

In February 2011, a group of former high-ranking American politicians and officials renewed calls to remove the MKO from the State Department’s official list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

They argued that the MKO is critical to any chance of overthrowing the Islamic establishment of Iran.

Report: US Likely to Delist MKO to Encourage More Terror against Iran

Recent Media reports unveiled Washington’s growing enthusiasm for the anti-Iran terrorist group, the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization, warning that the US intends to take the MKO off its blacklist in a bid to use the terrorist group as a proxy to launch attacks against Iranian interests.

According to a report, titled "the foolish embrace of the MEK (another label for the MKO)" published by The American Conservative, since early January 2011 the MKO has spent millions of dollars on lobbyists, Public Relations agents and communications firms to build up pressure on US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to take the group off the terrorist list, alleging that the MKO rejected violence and terrorism in 2001 and as a result should be de-listed.

"But this is not true, according to the FBI. A recently disclosed FBI report from 2004 reveals that the group continued to plan terrorist acts at least three years after they claimed to renounce terrorism," the report added.

The report pointed to the willingness of numerous former US government officials, retired military officers, and elected representatives to embrace the MKO, and underscored, "There’s no question that they are motivated by their loathing of the Iranian government, but their hostility to the regime had led them to endorse a group that most Iranians loathe."
Republican candidate Michele Bachmann described the group as "one of the bravest Iranian dissident groups" and "freedom-seeking." "Bachmann is hardly alone in her folly. She has quite a lot of company," the report added.

According to the report, other supporters include, Howard Dean, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee. President Obama’s former National Security Adviser Gen. James L. Jones is another. Others include Bill Richardson, former energy secretary and US ambassador to the United Nations; Michael Mukasey, attorney general under President George W. Bush; Tom Ridge, former governor of Pennsylvania and homeland security secretary under Bush; Gens. Peter Pace and Hugh Shelton, former vice chair and chairman, respectively, of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Louis Freeh, former FBI director; Lee Hamilton, former Democratic congressman; Michael Hayden, former director of the CIA; Gen. Anthony Zinni, former commander of the Central Command; Frances Townsend, homeland security adviser in the Bush White House; and Brad Sherman and Dana Rohrabacher of the House of Representatives.

In the past, the US has supported ethnic separatist groups inside Iran in their armed opposition to Tehran, most of whom have resorted to attacks on civilian targets. When Jundollah was added to the list of terrorist organizations, it seemed as if that policy of subversion through sponsoring terrorism might have been abandoned.
"If the effort to de-list the MKO is successful, it seems more than likely that the group will be used as a proxy to launch attacks against Iranian interests," the report stressed. The report quoted a political analyst as saying that "First, the desire to de-list them in Washington seems partially driven by gravitation towards covert military action against Iran."

"Neither sanctions nor diplomacy have yielded the desired results on the nuclear issue, and some in Washington are advocating using the MKO to conduct assassination and sabotage campaigns inside Iran," the report said. As one former State Department official put it, the "paradox is that we may take them off the terror list in order for them to do more terror".
The MKO, whose main stronghold is in Iraq, is blacklisted by much of the international community, including the United States. Before an overture by the EU, the MKO was on the European Union’s list of terrorist organizations subject to an EU-wide assets freeze. Yet, the MKO puppet leader, Maryam Rajavi, who has residency in France, regularly visited Brussels and despite the ban enjoyed full freedom in Europe.

The MKO is behind a slew of assassinations and bombings inside Iran, a number of EU parliamentarians said in a recent letter in which they slammed a British court decision to remove the MKO from the British terror list. The EU officials also added that the group has no public support within Iran because of their role in helping Saddam Hussein in the Iraqi imposed war on Iran (1980-1988).

Many of the MKO members abandoned the terrorist organization while most of those still remaining in the camp are said to be willing to quit but are under pressure and torture not to do so.
A May 2005 Human Rights Watch report accused the MKO of running prison camps in Iraq and committing human rights violations. According to the Human Rights Watch report, the outlawed group puts defectors under torture and jail terms.

The group, founded in the 1960s, blended elements of Islamism and Stalinism and participated in the overthrow of the US-backed Shah of Iran in 1979. Ahead of the revolution, the MKO conducted attacks and assassinations against both Iranian and Western targets. Leaders of the group have been fighting to shed its terrorist tag after a series of bloody anti-Western attacks in the 1970s, and nearly 30 years of violent struggle against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In recent years, high-ranking MKO members have been lobbying governments around the world in the hope of acknowledgement as a legitimate opposition group. The UK initiative, however, prompted the European Union to establish relations with the exiled organization now based in Paris. The European Court of First Instance threw its weight behind the MKO in December and annulled its previous decision to freeze its funds.

The group started assassination of the citizens and officials after the revolution in a bid to take control of the newly established Islamic Republic. It killed several of Iran’s new leaders in the early years after the revolution, including the then President, Mohammad Ali Rajayee, Prime Minister, Mohammad Javad Bahonar and the Judiciary Chief, Mohammad Hossein Beheshti who were killed in bomb attacks by MKO members in 1981.

The group fled to Iraq in 1986, where it was protected by Saddam Hussein and where it helped the Iraqi dictator suppress Shiite and Kurd uprisings in the country. The terrorist group joined Saddam’s army during the Iraqi imposed war on Iran (1980-1988) and helped Saddam and killed thousands of Iranian civilians and soldiers during the US-backed Iraqi imposed war on Iran.

Since the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, the group, which now adheres to a pro-free-market philosophy, has been strongly backed by neo-conservatives in the United States, who also argue for the MKO to be taken off the US terror list.

Mujahedin Khalq Organization's Propaganda System

Journalism versus Terrorism – Part 1

Former spokesman of, National Council of Resistance in London – member of parliament in exile according to the Huffingtonpost – has posted 19 articles on the Huffingtonpost since February 2010. Reading through the whole articles, I looked for the salient features. Surprisingly I came across with a common pattern in them that might lead the audience to wonder if Safavi, Former spokesman of, National Council of Resistance in London – member of parliament in exile according to the Huffingtonpostwas pushing the idea of the Foreign Terrorist designated entity, Mujahedin Khalq (MKO/MEK/PMOI) for which NCR is an alias, according to the State Department.[1]

In at least 18 articles out of 19 he just mentions the words or phrases: MEK, Mojahedin Khalq , PMOI and National Council of Resistance for more than 340 times.(!) Out of this big number more than 20 times, he claims MEK as “the main organized opposition” that represents the Iranian people against the “regime”.

He uses the term “regime” to refer to Islamic Republic government for over 102 times. Out of these 102, about half of them (at least 50 times) he portrays the “regime” by notorious acts including “execution”, “massacre” , “torture” , “ crack down” ,”suppression” , describing “the regime “ by adjectives like “suppressive”, “inhumane”, “deadly”.

He proposes the allegedly “Iranian “,”popular resistance” as the force to bring “democratic change” and eventually ”democracy" in Iran for about 40 times. This “democratic change” will guarantee “human rights” ,”freedom” ,”women rights” and “democracy” for the so-called suffering Iranian people under the current “regime”, according to Ali Safavi.

Besides, he uses the term “nuclear weapon” about 10 times to warn about the “threat “of a “nuclear bomb” made by the “regime”.

In the entire articles, out of those 340 that he mentions MKO and its other names, at least 58 times he asserts that “terrorist designation” of the group by the State Department has been a “good will gesture” to the “regime” in Tehran and the result of the ”regime” ‘s propaganda against the group. He calls the group’s opponents in the West as “Tehran apologists” who apply “appeasement “policy regarding Islamic Republic.

Safavi proposes the group’s “third option” which includes support for them to run their so-called “peaceful overthrow” of “the regime” in Tehran. He uses the verbs like “should”, ”must”, ”need to”, ”can” – boldly used in near 30 statements – to give advice ,make recommendation and even order the US administration, particularly President Obama to “immediately end shackling the MEK”.

Member of the allegedly parliament in exile mentions the name of MEK’s leader – in hiding now- Massoud Rajavi as the leader of the movement that wants to replace the “current regime” in at least 15 cases. He also introduces Mayram Rajavi (6 times) as the “president elect of Iran’s parliament in exile”.

Out of those 21 cases that he mentions the name of the Rajavis ,in 11 cases he refers to their speeches, messages and letters to prove their legitimacy, claiming MKO as “a Muslim organization” that believes in a “tolerant and democratic interoperation of Islam”.

The essence of Ali Safavi’s writings taken out of the particular patterns he applies to propose his arguments proves the hypotheses that he is promoting the cause of MEK in an apparently moderated media like the Huffington Post. That’s kind of biased journalism.

MEK supporters brought to testify before Congress

Former U.S. officials have admitted to receiving cash to speak at pro-MEK conferences. Now, officials who may be getting paid to publicly advocate in support of MEK (Mujahedin-e Khalq) are being invited to testify before Congress.MEK supporters brought to testify before Congress

Today at 2pm, a House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee is holding a hearing on the MEK in which three out of the four witnesses have appeared at conferences to advocate for the MEK to be removed from the U.S. terror list.

Among the officials is former Bush Attorney General Michael Mukasey, who flew to Paris last December to appear alongside MEK leader Maryam Rajavi and call for the U.S. to remove MEK from the terrorist list and start “offering all possible overt and covert support to the opposition.”

Interestingly, the only official testifying today who has not participated in pro-MEK events, Ray Takeyh, has been falsely smeared by MEK as being “pro-ayatollah” and “a leading figure of the pro-Iranian regime circles.”

Unfortunately, none of this comes as a surprise. In fact, the Chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), and top members like Ted Poe (R-TX), are themselves avowed supporters of the MEK. They even recently led a delegation to Iraq where they pushed the MEK agenda and promptly got themselves kicked out of the country. The embarrassing incident prompted the U.S. Embassy in Iraq to publicly distance itself from Rohrabacher and his pals and explain the group did not speak for the U.S.

If only now somebody would step up to explain why the laws aren’t being enforced to prevent former officials from getting paid to appear alongside terrorist leaders like Maryam Rajavi.
