U.S. congressional delegation sets off political bomb in Iraq

The U.S. Embassy in Iraq sought Saturday to distance itself from a highly contentious “fact-finding mission” to Baghdad led by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a California Republican, that prompted Iraq to demand that the entire congressional delegation leave the country.

During a meeting that lasted an hour and 40 minutes Friday with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Rohrabacher informed the Iraqi leader that his House subcommittee is investigating the killing by Iraqi troops of 35 Iranian dissidents on Iraqi soil in April.

After Rohrabacher later announced his investigation to the media, al-Maliki, who’s currently acting minister of defense as well as commander in chief, apparently hit the roof.

Rohrabacher, an Orange County conservative and the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on oversight and investigations, later told reporters that the “massacre” was probably a crime against humanity.

Rohrabacher also asked Iraq to consider at a later stage repaying some of the costs of the 2003 U.S. invasion and the occupation that followed. Iraq’s government spokesman publicly responded that Iraq would pay not “a cent.”

The U.S. Embassy issued a statement explaining that Congress is a separate branch of government whose members often disagree with the executive branch. It said it was important for members of Congress to meet and exchange views with Iraqi leaders, “even when there are disagreements.”

Embassy spokesman David Ranz noted that congressional visitors “do not necessarily express the views of the U.S. administration or even a majority of the Congress.”

Rohrabacher, Rep. Russ Carnahan of Missouri — who is the ranking Democrat on Rohrabacher’s subcommittee — and four other members of the delegation were already in transit Friday night when the Iraqi government announced it had asked for them to leave the country. It appears that the telephone call by a member of the Iraqi government to the U.S. Embassy was also made at about that time.

Other members of the delegation were Republican Reps. Ted Poe of Texas, who is also a member of Rohrabacher’s subcommittee, Jeff Duncan of South Carolina and Louie Gohmert of Texas, and Democratic Rep. Jim Costa of California.

Rohrabacher told McClatchy Saturday that he had not pointed the finger of responsibility at al-Maliki, who was head of the armed forces at the time of the killings.

“If the prime minister felt guilty about it, for whatever reasons, that’s his business. We didn’t say anything to implicate him,” Rohrabacher said in a telephone interview from Istanbul, Turkey. “We did say that the massacre of so many civilians was a crime, and we needed to make sure that those responsible for it were held accountable.”

Those killed were members of the People’s Mujahedeen of Iran, or MEK by its Farsi language initials, a militant Iranian group that fought Iran under Saddam Hussein and got stranded in Iraq after the U.S. overthrew the dictator. The U.S. has listed the MEK as a terrorist group for more than a decade.

Rohrabacher said he thought the person responsible for the massacre may have been a colonel who was commanding troops on the ground at the time. He said that if al-Maliki had told his subordinates to tell their troops not to hold back and to open fire even if they were up against unarmed civilians, “then he would be culpable. Otherwise he’s not.”
Rohrabacher said he had no regrets for what he’d said and would issue no apology.

Iraq wants other countries to take the 3,400-plus MEK members now ensconced at Camp Ashraf, north of Baghdad and close to the Iranian border. Rohrabacher agreed that would be the best outcome, but he said he didn’t want the U.S. to open its doors.

“I don’t think the United States should take in everyone who’s in a bad situation,” he told McClatchy in an earlier phone interview.

Carnahan didn’t respond to requests for an interview but issued a statement that skirted any criticism of Rohrabacher’s investigation. “Last April’s reports of deadly clashes and other violence against the residents of Camp Ashraf are deeply concerning,” he said. “I encourage the government of Iraq to swiftly follow through with a thorough investigation of this incident.”

The chair of the full House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Florida Republican, also had no problems with the mission.

“Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle, including me, have, for some time, raised concerns with the Department of State about the welfare of the residents of Camp Ashraf in Iraq and recent actions by Iraqi authorities against camp residents,” she said in a statement.

CIA use MKO terror group to counter Anti-war campaign

An Iranian exile organization and anti-war activists both made a colorful appearance today at an otherwise subdued Senate confirmation hearing today for Defense Secretary-nominee Leon Panetta.

Supporters of the People’s Mujahedeen Organization of Iran, a controversial Iranian resistance movement that was once allied with Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, took up a couple of rows in the Dirksen Senate office building hearing room. They were wearing matching day-glow yellow T-shirts and vests that read, “Protect Camp Ashraf” and “Delist MEK.”

The latter slogan refers to the campaign to have the group removed from the State Department’s terrorist list, an effort that has enlisted some high-profile names in Washington. Camp Ashraf is the name of the group’s compound north of Baghdad, which was the scene of a deadly crackdown by Iraqi security forces in April.

Also in the audience was a smaller contingent from Code Pink, the antiwar group. Code Pink members, wearing their signature pink shirts, silently held up signs in the aisle opposite the MEK. Their signs read, “End war – rebuild America”; “Bring our war $ home”’; and “Diplomacy not war!!”

Iran: US human rights stance contrary to their support for MKO

Iran’s Judiciary chief has criticized Western countries for imposing their viewpoints of human rights on other states by using their “media domination.”

“There is a contradiction between the words and actions of Western countries on human rights and they impose their viewpoints of human rights on other states by media domination,” said Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani on Tuesday, Mehr news agency reported.

He added that the US and other Western nations “repeat their human rights allegations” against other countries in an attempt to destabilize them.

Ayatollah Larijani noted that the US and its Western allies, in contradiction to their claims of human rights, support a number of regional regimes that have no regard for human rights and democracy in their countries.

The Iranian Judiciary chief also criticized the West’s support for certain terrorist groups such as Mujahedeen Khalq Organization (MKO) “that clearly violated human rights and killed many people.”

The MKO is listed as a terrorist organization by much of the international community and has carried out numerous acts of terror and violence against Iranian civilians and government officials.

The Iraq-based group is also known to have cooperated with executed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in suppressing 1991 uprisings in southern Iraq and the massacre of Iraqi Kurds.

The European Union removed the MKO from its list of terrorist organizations in 2009.

In 2010, the European Parliament also issued a declaration and urged the US to remove the MKO from Washington’s list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations. The MKO, which has been on the US terror list since 1997, filed a petition against the blacklisting in 2008.

French lawyers of Yves Bonnet seriously condemned the group’s misinformation on his court ruling and reproached MKO for distortion of the ruling.

Following the biting failure of Yves Bonnet, former Head of French Secret Service, in French appeal court in Paris, Rajavi’s band set off for a disinformation campaign quoting fake words of Bonnet’s French lawyers.

In the announcement allegedly related to 5 French lawyers published on MKO’s websites in Persian, Yves Bonnet has won two courts against his plaintiffs during the 2 past years.
In fact, Mr. Yves Bonnet absolutely lost his two courts in Paris where Rajavi’s Band had mobilized 600 people and attacked and bit critics.

He was sentenced to pay penalty and publish an apology letter in three French newspapers.
He was required by the court to mention in the letter of apology that his book:” Vevak at Ayatollahs service” was written under the orders of Mujahedin Khalq Organization. He also had to pay a 3000 – euro penalty.

Following the publication of the distorted announcement regarding Bonnet’s Court, plaintiffs of the court complained to french judiciary .Yves Bonnet’s attorneys, to respond the court judge, denied the announcement published on MKO official websites and declared that they didn’t compose or publish any announcement regarding Yves Bonnet’s court.

They seriously condemned MKO’s obstinate act to distort the ruling of French judiciary.

The attorneys told that they hadn’t been aware of the text of the announcement and admitted that the court ruling was based on Mr. Bonnet’s failure.

Once again, the terrorist group of Rajavi means to hold an event in Paris, in the anniversary of the day they declared armed struggle against IR ,on June 18, 2011 so that the group might be able to fuel its propaganda machine for a few days. MKO More Dangerous than Al-Qaida

When MKO declared armed struggle on June 20th, 1981, the war between Iran and Iraq was in its bad days and Saddam Hussein (Rajavi’s master)’s forces had occupied regions of Iranian territory. The declaration of armed struggle was in fact Rajavi’s first step to flatter Saddam. By starting a civil war Rajavi was supposed to keep the country’s armed forces busy in the streets in order to let Iraqis achieve their goals in the fronts.

Besides, on June20, 1981, Rajavi’s treasonous decision ended with death and execution and arrest of thousands of Iranian youth who had been deceived by Rajavis’ passionate words although Rajavi has his hand in hand of Iran’s main enemy Saddam Hussein. They were both working hard to ruin Iran.

Now, by launching a new funny show in France abusing the bloods of those killed in Ashraf Iraq on April 8th, 2011, Maryam Rajavi and his husband want to hold an event supported by some retired MPs. They want to show off before the eyes of the world to say that they are still alive but the entire world has seen the death of such decayed group.

On the occasion of their first treason, they want to recruit participants from all European countries and refugee camps. These refugees do not have passport, they are mostly Afghans, Kurds, Turks and even Russians who are illegally taken to France by bus in order to play as mere numbers. These people are promised to go sightseeing in Paris and their stay in hotel and food are guaranteed by MKO so they are called as Iranians in exile.

As a former member of this terrorist group who had been deceived by the group’s reactionary system, and now is living in Germany, I warn all European states and security bodies that today they nurture a group which is more dangerous than Al-Qaida. The terrorist cult of Rajavi abuses social and international liberty to achieve their horrible, ominous objectives. The group has even no pity for its own forces and make them die simply to reach its goals.

European states and security organizations should seriously watch their nations so that their youth don’t get in the trap of these dangerous groups.

WASHINGTON — The United States has assessed that a leading Iranian opposition organization that in the 1970s was aligned with leftist and Marxist causes was a cult that deals brutally with members who want to leave.

The State Department has concluded that the Mujahadeen Khalq, or MEK, was holding Iranian exiles against their will in Iraq’s Camp Ashraf. The department, in cables sent to Washington over the last 20 years, asserted that Mujahadeen set a policy of killing suspected defectors from the movement supported by the former Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq.

Wikipedia said the group which played a major role with the leftist Tudeh Party in the overthrow of the Shah in 1979, was more "religious, radical, anti-American" than the earlier generation of Iranian leftists.

"Many of the defectors alleged psychological and psychical harm at the hands of the MEK, including solitary confinement in MEK jails in Ashraf," a State Department cable read.
The cables were released by the U.S. government under the Freedom of Information Act in May. U.S. lobbyists for Mujahadeen dismissed the cables as inaccurate and biased to fit the State Department’s conception that MEK was a terrorist group.

"The question is why, when every single Camp Ashraf resident was taken outside, and interviewed by the U.S. military in American-controlled facilities in 2003 and 2004, and each were given the choice to leave, none of those individuals had done so?" Allan Gerson, an attorney for MEK in Washington, asked.

Over the last two years, MEK has been recruiting former senior U.S. officials to remove the group from the State Department’s terror list. Many former officials, including those from the State Department, assert that Mujahadeen was deemed a terrorist group in 1994 as part of a U.S. reconciliation effort with Iran.

The State Department cables quoted defectors as describing MEK as a cult that punishes former members. The cables said the MEK leadership ordered the execution of all attempted defectors.
"They reaffirmed existing perceptions of the MEK as a cult-like organization that thrives on maintaining control of its members and those lured to Ashraf under false pretenses," one cable read.

The State Department traced MEK from the Iranian revolution in 1979. The cables said MEK supported the Islamic takeover of the U.S. embassy in Teheran in which diplomats were held hostage for more than a year.

Several years after the revolution, MEK was outlawed by the regime in Iran. The group fled to neighboring Iraq and was supported by the Saddam regime, which used MEK to attack civilian targets in Iran.

"They are hated among Iranians, since their hands are stained with the blood of their fellow countrymen," the State Department, quoting an exiled Iranian, said.

Lobbyists said the State Department cables would have little affect on the effort to legalize MEK in the United States. Members of Congress as well as potential presidential candidates, arguing that MEK has eschewed violence, have called for the removal of the group from the State Department terror list.

Why Doesn’t MKO Let Members go?

More than seven years after the fall of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, MKO leaders still force members to stay in the group. They treat their rank and file as hostages who are not even

allowed to contact or visit their picketing families at Ashraf gates. Besides, the hostages are always at risk of an other bloodshed since it is clear that Iraqi government doesn’t want them in its territory.

The bloody clashes at camp Ashraf in June, 2009 and April, 2011 do not promote MKO leaders to think of a solution for members transferring instead they exploit the killing of their forces as fuel for their propaganda machine. Despite the threatened situation of Ashraf residents, the camp leaders do not let them choose for their future in the current critical condition of Camp Ashraf.

Although the killing of 32 Ashraf residents is controversial and both sides of the clashes accuse each other for the massacre, one thing is clear and that’s the danger that Ashraf residents are exposed to either by the side of Iraqi security forces or by the MKO leaders, Ashraf residents are the main victims of such crisis. What have MKO leaders done to prevent other incidents like the previous ones?

Absolutely nothing! In the early May, the United States presented a plan to relocate the Mujahedin Khalq in another Iraqi region far from Iranian border. A senior State Department official said the plan was aimed at preventing more violence at Camp Ashraf, according to Reuters.[1] although the solution offered by US officials seemed operational for short-term, MKO’s Paris spokesman said the plan would lead “to a concentration camp” and “the ultimate result will be a new Auschwite”.[2]

Mohaddesin’s fallacious argument to prolong the group’s stay at camp Ashraf was confirmed by the group’s Scottish advocate in European parliament, Struan Stevenson. The EU conservative MP said relocating the MEK was “not an acceptable alternative”, Roy Gutman of McClatchy Newspaper reported.[3]

On May11, Struan Stevenson apparently proposed a plan to European Parliament for the removal of Camp Ashraf residents from Iraq. His plan contains 5 conditions to be met. [4] Mr. Stevenson proposal is unilateral because the rights of Iraqi nation as the owner of its territory are totally ignored in it. The entire plan implies that Iraqi government is offensive and Mujahedin are offended. However, there is still ambiguity about the truth of what exactly happened on April 8th2011 at Camp Ashraf. He never notices that MKO leaders do not allow the residents to choose whether to leave or to stay. They have to stay.

Abdollatif Shadvari is a former member of MKO who has recently escaped the cult. He is asked by Golnaz Esfandiari of Radio Free Europe why MKO wants to keep people in Camp Ashraf and why they don’t let those who don’t want to be there go.” it’s obvious,” he answered “If people [leave Ashraf],the organization will fall apart, there won’t be any Mujahedin-e-Khalq Organization anymore.”[6]

In her speech among a number of her European sponsors like Alejo Vidal Quadras and Struan Stevenson, Maryam Rajavi threatened the world over a massacre at camp Ashraf.”I warn that any forcible relocation is a prelude to massacre the residents,” she said. [For those who are informed of MKO cult-like nature, it is clear that who will perform the massacre. You may remember the vague record of killing of 35 people on April 8 or the self-immolations on June 2003, following the arrest of Maryam Rajavi by French Police.

MKO’s firm stance against relocation and Stevenson’s unilateral, time killing plan are signs of Rajavi’s strong will to maintain the cult’s only ideological container since the removal of Ashraf signifies the removal of the organization that has worked to recruit and keep thousands of people behind its bars in their isolated world…
