Iran Interlink Weekly Digest – 288

++ Over the last two weeks, MEK sites and Maryam Rajavi have been keen to declare a victory for Israel after its massacre of Palestinians in Gaza which were condemned as war crimes throughout the world. Rajavi ludicrously then claimed that if Iran had not been involved, the Israelis and Palestinians would have no problems and would be living together in peace and harmony. Essentially, she claimed that Iran was behind the conflict. Her conclusion, of course, is that President Biden should attack Iran and bring about regime change, with her in charge obviously. This will make everything between Israel and Palestine OK. Among the reactions to this was a piece by Mansour Nazari in France which goes into detail about the history of the MEK. Nazari concludes that from the time of Saddam, for forty years, on every occasion and in every place, the MEK have been totally on the side of the enemies of Iranians: ‘Following the shadow of the enemies of Iran’.

++ According to a decree issued by Massoud Rajavi, the National Liberation Army no longer exists, and all membership has been dissolved. A new army has been established and everyone will have to write and ask to be a member of the new NLA. First they’re out, then they’re in again! The irony is that this is done in a mass meeting with closed doors so everyone is forced to comply or suffer the consequences (punishment). Among many reactions, commentators point out that the last four times the NLA was dissolved and resurrected were in Iraq when they had arms and armaments. Every time this was done Rajavi felt the organisation was collapsing. Now in Albania there is no army and there is no need for an army. It is clear though that the MEK leaders are weak and desperate. This is about pushing the residents of the camp in closed conditions with no contact with the outside world, to sign a commitment not to leave.

++ In an attempt to influence the election in Iran, MEK are full on telling people not to vote, especially those outside Iran. MEK claims to have cameras outside polling stations and the tacit support of the CIA, and they will kill people who vote. They threaten that there will be bombs in polling stations in Iran so people should keep away. The MEK claims its ‘sleeper cells’ are now active and will kill people. The MEK wants to create an atmosphere of fear – terrorist tactics. The basic message is: don’t go to vote. In order to attempt to dissuade people from voting MEK also claim that it’s obvious Ebrahim Raisi will win so it’s not a genuine election anyway. On that issue, Ebrahim Khodabandeh wrote a note in which he explains that while with the MEK at the time Khatami won the presidency, he was invited to go on Sky News on behalf of the MEK. Khodabandeh says that “our line, on which I was briefed, was to say that Khatami would definitely lose the election, that the regime could not change and that a snake will never give birth to a dove… When I went to the studio, although all the other guests were saying the same thing, I was hardline about it. However, it turned out that Khatami won and I remember on a later occasion when I met the interviewer, he said ‘I was led to believe the same thing’. It shows you can’t be certain of the election at any time. Nobody can predict the outcome.”

In English:

++ According to a piece by Nejat Society, the MEK honed its propaganda capabilities during the 1970s and 1980s, boasting of its deadly activities in Iraq and Iran – the assassination of six Americans in Iran, bombings, sabotage, indiscriminate murder of over 12,000 Iranians, cross border operations and military operations against Iraqi Kurds and Shiites in Iraq. This irrefutable evidence in its own words turned out to be counterproductive after the MEK was exposed to media scrutiny when the terrorist organization was moved to Albania and the controversial lifestyle of the MEK members invited investigation. This led to several damning reports by various media, including Der Spiegel and the BBC. The MEK cannot escape its past nor the fact that it is sustained on the back of 2000 modern slaves.

++ Several outlets reported that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken banned Albania’s former PM Sali Berisha from entering the US on the grounds of corruption. Iran-Interlink reminded us that Berisha was instrumental in having the MEK removed from the US terrorism list, and that Albania’s political system benefitted financially from hosting the MEK there. Berisha was an enthusiastic advocate for MEK. And notoriously corrupt.

++ Massoud Khodabandeh wrote after news emerged that Albania’s Council of Ministers have approved legislation to streamline documentation for all foreigners in Albania, whatever their reason – holiday homes, work, asylum, etc. The initial White Card will convey the same rights as citizens except the right to vote. Former MEK members have already applied and been registered to receive the documentation. This will allow them to work, buy property and run businesses. Khodabandeh wrote that this documentation is applicable to all MEK members. To this end, Maryam Rajavi has tried to hide this information and force the members to commit to abrogate their individual rights in favour of obedience to the terms of MEK membership. This is impossible under Article 30 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

++ Italian and Albanian media reported that two old Iranian men who were caught smuggling 3 vials of Astrazenica vaccine from Germany via Italy to Albania. Under the title ‘MEK Crime Organisation’ Iran-Interlink revealed that the men are long-term MEK members living in Germany, and the 18-dose vaccine was probably destined for Maryam Rajavi. She prefers to remain separated in Tirana from the ordinary members, who are dying from COVID-19 in the closed camp in Manez. The Iran-Interlink piece covered the history of criminal activities of the MEK which are now the main activities of the cult.

++ Several outlets revisited historical MEK crimes and abuses, including abuse of women, assassinations, murders and more. Nejat Society drew attention to a current scandalous abuse of human rights as the family of 78-year-old Rahim Kiuhan seeks help from the international community to rescue him. Kiuhan has tried over many years to be able to contact his family. MEK has cruelly prevented this. As a result of the continuous mental and physical pressures imposed on him over this issue, he is now reportedly very ill in the MEK camp in Manez. Unfortunately, Kiuhan is one of many MEK members and their families suffering inhuman abuse at the hands of Maryam Rajavi and her acolytes, on whom the responsible officials and authorities have turned their backs.

++ Tehran Times reported on a speech by Iran’s Spiritual Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. In his address to the nation, Khamenei said that Iran is ‘stronger than ever’. He touched on American predictions that the IRI would not see its 40th anniversary; “I do not remember so many predictions of decay and collapse to have been made about any other system.” This was interpreted as referring to former US national security advisor John Bolton’s version of this prediction when he addressed a gathering of MEK members in a propaganda rally in 2017. [MEK leader Maryam Rajavi has since been expelled from the EU and is now isolated in Albania.]

Maryam Rajavi struggle to hold on the cult members

The MEK is struggling to hold on to its own members, who have begun to defect in Tirana,Albania. Hundreds of members have walked out – complaining about the organisation’s rigid rules enforcing celibacy, and control over contact with family.
Widely regarded as a cult, the MEK was once designated as a terrorist organization by the US and UK, but its opposition to the Iranian government.

MEK Troll farm
Mujahedin Khalq as an Opposition Group

MEK troll farms in cyberspaces

The troll farm of the Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MKO/ MEK/ PMOI/ Cult of Rajavi) in Albania, are charged with some different duties in the cyberspace in order to create street ‎protests and turbulences in Iran.
Workers of the MEK troll farm in camp Ashraf three, are directed to create numerous channels on social networks including Telegram to launch their propaganda. They also are instructed to penetrate other channels, groups and pages related to different social and political group and businesses.

By providing information about that specific matter, they try to show themselves as a member of the very group and then they play the role of a leading protester. In case of any physical protest, there are always some deceived individuals paid or manipulated by the MEK trolls who take part as an enthusiastic protester.

MEK Troll farm

This is not a new tactic for MEK, in the early years after the 1979 revolution in Iran, MEK activists used to work hard to influence students and workers. Each of these people was tasked with missionary roles as the leader of a protest and ultimately led the group to the streets, strikes, and clashes.

It is worth to note that after the onset of MEK’s terror acts in the 1980s, these same individuals were armed with weapons. They killed a large number of students, workers and normal citizens in the streets. In fact, the assassinations were kind of revenge against the lack of public’s company for MEK agents.

Rajavi and Khiabani meeting Ayatollah Khomeini
Massoud Rajavi

January 1979 – Rajavi’s tactics for preserving the life of the MEK

After the release of political prisoners on the eve of the victory of the revolution, and the subsequent release of Massoud Rajavi (a central member of the Mojahedin-e- Khalq Organization) in January of that year, members of the organization began to define their alignments with other groups. Rajavi’s main tactic for preserving the life of the organization was to follow the method of the past and the founders of the organization and use their reputation.

Using thoughtful measures and taking the lead in criticizing the past performance of the organization and the slogans and goals of the early founders, he and his comrades resumed their activities. And In this way, they created a positive image for themselves and made the most of the revolutionary atmosphere for recruitment and reorganization. By formation and reorganizing, the organization published several books in the country by members to praise the organization’s casualties. While, the problems caused by the Lack of teaching ideological issues in eliminating its shortcomings and ambiguities were forgotten, and pragmatism and power-seeking grew to the point that prevented the organization from properly analyzing and understanding the existing realities of society. Following this, the organization, from January to February 1979, in order to stabilize its position in the future of the Islamic Revolution, undertook a series of important measures. In fact, in these two months, the centrality of the organization devoted all its efforts to seeking a share in the future of the Islamic Revolution.
One of the most important actions of the organization to achieve this goal was to focus on the forces that the members of the organization and the centrality had worked on in prison.

Rajavi and Khiabani meeting Ayatollah Khomeini

In a move, the organization’s centrality sent these forces as agents across the country and to different cities to be able to implement the organization’s plans.

These people had the mission to introduce themselves as revolutionary figures, in other words, the owners of the revolution, through extensive and voluminous propaganda. These forces took part in mass demonstrations across the country at this time; and tried to Display placards, posters, pictures related to the organization, the logo of the organization as well as the sentences of its leaders and pictures of the killed people of the organization in order to gain a place for themselves among the people. In order to be able to acquaint the masses with themselves and to introduce themselves as militant, mujahid and revolutionary forces, if possible. Another important action of the organization at this time includes a large-scale effort of the centrality to gain management of the welcoming ceremony of Ayatollah Khomeini or at least take responsibility in that ceremony.
Therefore, in February 1979 and in the days before the arrival of Ayatollah Khomeini in the country, the Central Committee made extensive efforts to introduce the organization as the largest military force that has the authority to manage the reception of Ayatollah Khomeini and protect the life of Ayatollah; Therefore, they insisted that through this, the organization becomes the main circle around the Ayatollah, so that when he enters the country, Massoud Rajavi and Musa Khiabani will be around the Ayatollah. The effort of the centrality was to make history for the organization by placing themselves in the circle of Ayatollah’s entourage so that they could somehow confiscate the revolution and the Ayatollah in their favor. In addition to the efforts of people like martyr Motahari and martyr Beheshti who were in charge, the stance of Ayatollah Khomeini himself, who never even approved of the organization and never recognized them, was very effective in removing the MEK from the circle of Ayatollah Khomeini when he arrived.

Iran revolution of 1979

Therefore, with the efforts of Martyr Boroujerdi’s group of seven groups in protecting the life of the Ayatollah and establishing the security of the ceremony, a severe blow was dealt to the goals and plans of the organization.

Storing all kinds of weapons and equipping the organization more and more with weapons at this time were other activities of centrality. At the same time as the revolutionary clashes escalated at this time, the members of the organization began to collect weapons and carry out armed maneuvers. In those days when garrisons, police stations, military bases, SAVAK centers were being occupied, one of the orders of the organization to its forces, which was being seriously pursued, was to loot all kinds of weapons in a very large volume.

The next and calculated move of the organization at this stage was to collect documents of SAVAK and the regime’s security organizations. The forces affiliated with the organization were attacking the SAVAK buildings and the regime’s security centers, while destroying these centers, collecting documents and transferring them to team houses. The organization did this for two purposes: first, it tried to hide the betrayals of the organization’s members in prisons and their cooperation with SAVAK. Their next goal was to collect documents to destroy their opponents and tarnish their position.

Finally, the stance taken by the leaders of the organization in the midst of the revolution gives the impression that they, like the Marxists, believed that the struggle in all societies would eventually leads to the establishment of a democratic system of government. In fact, what the organization was seeking to propagate at this time was the realization of a democratic revolution and the implementation of the principles of socialism in Iranian society. Hence, the organization joined the lines of the revolution to get closer to this goal.

Media Literacy
Mujahedin Khalq Organization's Propaganda System

Media Literacy, the key to stop MEK’s troll farm

Fake accounts can pose a serious threat to users, whether it’s through spam or illicit activities such as scams. In April 2021, Facebook removed hundreds of fake accounts linked to the Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MEK/ MKO/ PMOI/ Cult of Rajavi) and their troll farm in Albania. According to the AP, Facebook determined the accounts were being run from a single location in Albania by a group of individuals working on behalf of MEK. Facebook found other telltale clues suggesting a troll farm, in which workers are charged with posting content, including misinformation, to social media.

Facebook said it removed such accounts based on how they behave, not on the material they post. In some cases, the fake accounts used photos of Iranian celebrities or deceased dissidents. A small number of the more recent Instagram accounts appear to have used profile pictures that were computer generated.
Fake accounts run by trolls in the MEK farm –Camp Ashraf 3- in Albania, also proceed to ‎provoke celebrities, famous artists and athletic figures to promote their agenda which is creating chaos and division in Iran.‎ Although Facebook has removed some of their accounts, they keep on working in the social media unintrupptedly. Everyday, they build up new accounts and run new anti-Iran agenda ordered by the leaders.

MEK troll farm in Albania

Leaked photos showing MEK members at work

The MEK trolls, using the freedom of speech in the social media and tolerance of celebrities, write comments below their posts regarding the content the person has posted. They use intimidation bullying other users. In order to launch their clamorous criticism against the Iranian government they resort to fabrications and fake news.
This brings up the issue of “Media literacy” which is essentially originated from critical thinking. Media literacy is the ability to identify different types of media and the messages they are sending. When we speak of media, it encompasses print media, such as newspapers, magazines and posters, and theatrical presentations, tweets, radio broadcasts, etc.

Media literacy is not taught but is voluntary, then it is purely self-selecting and also unlikely to solve the issue. Those interested in learning about and detecting misinformation are probably those who are already least likely to be fooled by it.
Therefore, users in the social media, particularly prominent figures in arts, cinema and sports must be more media literate in order to deal with fake accounts who run fake news. All over the world, concerns over fake news have triggered a renewed interest in various forms of media literacy. Media literacy help audiences to be immunized against any harmful effects of misleading information.

Sali Berisha
Mujahedin Khalq Organization as a terrorist group

Berisha Requested MEK Delisting

In May, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken banned Sali Berisha, former President of Albania, from entering the US on grounds of corruption. In a video speech, Berisha went on to defend himself. Remarkably, in the video he admits that he asked former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton to remove the MEK from the US terrorism list before he would accept the group in Albania. The State Department formally removed the MEK from the Foreign Terrorist List in September 2012. In May 2013, the first MEK members began arriving in Albania. Three tranches of ten million dollars were paid to the Albanian government. Some of which was intended to build an Institute for the De-Radicalisation of extremists, including the MEK. This was not established or created.

MEK women in Ashraf 3

Leaked photo of MEK’s Albanian headquarters

As an organised crime group, the MEK lost no time in making itself at home in Albania – a country notorious for its three major mafia families and corrupt government and state institutions. The MEK bribed, intimidated and flouted its way into the Albanian system. This enabled the MEK to build a closed, military-style camp in which the enslaved members are held, and bend Albania’s foreign policy to its own agenda.

Meanwhile, after the MEK settled in Albania, Berisha and other politicians found lucrative work in advocating for the group. Berisha regularly spoke in the MEK rallies in Paris and, after Maryam Rajavi was expelled from the EU, in Albania. In 2019, Berisha boasted that by backing the MEK, he had chosen the right side.

It appears, however, that Secretary Blinken takes a different view of ‘the right side’ and has found Berisha on the wrong, corrupt, side.

Rahim Kiukan’s family seeks help from Albanian government officials as well as the international community

The family of Rahim Kiukan, who is based in the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK, MKO) camp in Albania, has written a letter to the Albanian Prime Minister asking for help with his situation in the country.
The text of the letter, which follows, has also been sent to other Albanian government officials as well as international organizations and the media.

Mr Edi Rama,
Honorable Prime Minister of the Republic of Albania
Greetings and best regards
We, the extended family of Mr Rahim Kiukan – who is based in the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK, MKO) camp in Albania – including his wife, 2 sons, 2 daughters, 2 sons-in-law, 2 daughters-in-law and 7 grandchildren – have been informed that he has been trying to make contact with his family for years but has been prevented from doing so by the MEK.

Kiukan family

According to the information we obtained, he is now seriously ill and in quarantine due to the physical and psychological pressures that are generally placed on disaffected people in the MEK seeking contact with their families, and he is still not allowed to communicate with his family.
We also learned that he had been severely pressured to take a public stand against his family, who have been working tirelessly to obtain any information about him, and to denounce their actions, which he refused to do, and he is therefore placed under double pressure.

Rahim, 78, left Iran in September 1981 in support of the MEK at the behest of the organization and eventually went to Iraq. He was then transferred to Albania with other members of the organization. Like other members, he has no right to communicate with the outside world, especially family and friends.

Rahim Kiukan family

During these years, we made great efforts and sent many letters to Albanian government officials and international and human rights organizations, asking them to help us contact Rahim and get information about his condition, but we did not get any results from these efforts.
We urge you to help us in any way possible to establish a connection with Rahim Kiukan, who is a prisoner of the MEK in Albania and who has been deprived of any right to communicate and is quite ill in old age, so that we can move beyond our worries.

Yours Sincerely,
Leila Kiukan on behalf of the family

MEK transfer from Iraq to Albania
Mujahedin Khalq Organization

MEK efforts to hide disappointments under the constructions

The headquarters of the Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MKO/ MEK/ PMOI/ Cult of Rajavi) is called Camp Ashraf 3. The thought-provoking point about the newly-built camp is that it is very similar to the group’s headquarters in Iraq, Camp Ashraf, which was located in Diyala Province, about 120 kilometers west of the Iranian border and 60 kilometers north of Baghdad. As the group’s new base in the heart of Europe, in north of Tirana, Camp Ashraf 3 is still under construction.

However, the headquarters of the MEK in Albania is much smaller than the notorious Camp Ashraf in Iraq, which covered an area of about 50 km from the Diyala deserts in Iraqi territory. But Camp Ashraf 3 is built precisely by copying the buildings and monuments of Camp Ashraf.

MEK members in Albania

The organization’s instructions to build the new camp parallel to Camp Ashraf must be based on two reasons. Firstly, it connotes the same atmosphere to members of the group and may be able to stop the impressions of failure and frustration from expulsion from Iraq. Secondly, it may create this mental orientation for disappointed and dissident members –whose number is increasingly on the rise—- that nothing has changed and they should remain at service of the group and its cause. Actually, according to the leaders, members should not expect any change!

Albania - MEK - Ashraf 3

A member of Mujahedin-e Khalgh walks in a street at the Ashraf-3 camp. Photo:Gent shkullaku/AFP

According to members who managed to escape from the MEK’s camp in Albania, the buildings of the camp are apparently interior and exterior like what it was in Camp Ashraf, Iraq. The names of the streets, the number of the rooms and the way they use the rooms and buildings, exactly the same way they were used in Camp Ashraf, Iraq.
The shut down of Camp Ashraf and the eventual expulsion of the MEK from Iraq is considered to be the most disappointing blow in the history of the Cult of Rajavi, following the long years of promising to overthrow the government in Tehran. The closure of Camp Ashraf marks the failure of the Rajavis to meet their promises and more importantly annihilation of lives of thousands of their members.

Prosecute MEK leaders for killing my brother

The Mujahedin-e Khalq arrested my brother; Kheirollah Zakeri during the Iran-Iraq war. They imprisoned him in their camp for along time. Putting him under physical and mental pressure, the MEK forced my young brother into participating in their failed operation against Iran called Eternal Light.
During that operation he was killed suspiciously.

Based on the Geneva Convention relative to the “Treatment of Prisoners of War” no detaining power is allowed to use POWs for political or military purposes.
Though the Mujahedin-e Khalq cult leaders committed this crime against several prisoners and violated the rules of the convention, why haven’t been prosecuted so far?!
