The cult of Rajavi

UK must rescue modern slaves from clutches of MKO in Iraq

The recent discovery of three modern slaves in a quiet area in London has echoes of the situation of the three thousand hostages in Camp Liberty in Iraq. In each case the victims were brought together thirty years ago to live collectively as part of a shared political ideology. In London, as in Iraq, this went wrong when the use of emotional and physical abuse was used to enslave the victims against their will.

Just as the three women in London have had traumatic and disturbing experiences, so the escapees from Camp Liberty have described the systematic use of psychological, emotional and physical abuses behind closed doors to keep them under the control of brutal, exploitative leaders.

As in London, the victims of the Mojahedin Khalq are left emotionally fragile and highly vulnerable. Their needs for a careful and compassionate process of recovery and rehabilitation are similar. This can only be achieved if they are protected from their former ‘owners’ who will try their utmost to collect them back up and return them to conditions of slavery.

Under the terms of an agreement struck between UNAMI and the government of Iraq in 2009 to remove the Mojahedin Khalq organisation from Iraqi territory in line with the country’s constitution, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees has asked the UK to re-admit 52 residents of Camp Ashraf who were previously settled in the UK but no longer have immigration status. Each individual will be assessed by the UNHCR to ensure they have not been complicit in acts of terrorism or other activities incompatible with refugee status.

When assessing these considerations it is vital that the UK government remember that these people are victims of modern slavery, and above all that their lives are in danger at the hands of their ‘owners’ Massoud and Maryam Rajavi. Several residents of Camp Liberty are already on enforced hunger strike over a spurious issue; their option to continue or not has been removed as they are being denied access to food. Other residents have already been killed through the deprivation of medical treatment, or having been placed in direct danger of attack as occurred in the 1st September incident at Camp Ashraf.

Just as the London victims were enslaved for thirty years, so the members of the Mojahedin Khalq have been isolated and abused behind closed doors for thirty years. The government of Iraq and UNAMI must act to open the doors of the camp and gain access to these residents. Western governments must make a genuine effort to undertake the rescue of these victims and give them refuge. Above all they must ensure that they are saved from further abuse when they arrive in their countries as, without safe and targeted support, the Mojahedin Khalq leaders – who operate openly and freely in western countries – will easily search them out and enthral them once again.

‘I support the MEK out of my loyalty to Saddam’

Jordanian Deputy Vasfi Al Zyoud: I support the MEK out of my loyalty to Saddam

Vasfi Al Zyoud, MP in the Jordanian parliament said he supports the MEK terrorist organisation because they were sponsored by the former Iraqi president, Saddam Hussein, pointing out that support for this organization by several Jordanian MPs stems from their loyalty to Saddam Hussein.

Al Zyoud defended the presence of a Jordanian parliamentary delegation in the Conference to support the MEK recently held in the French capital Paris.

As reported by Ashraf News, Al Zyoud said through his Facebook page, “Remember always that the Iranian opposition was sponsored by Great Martyr Saddam Hussein, and our faithful commander met with them and listened to them and I will talk about those meetings.”

The Jordanian Parliamentary delegation, which comprised 19 MPs from the Congress, drew sharp criticism from some observers who said that the move could worsen relations with the Iraqi government, which calls for the deportation of MEK members living in Camp Liberty on its territory.

Mujahedin Khalq; A proxy force

Israel gives financial backing to the MEK terrorist organisation

Israeli newspaper Maariv revealed that the Israeli government has promised financial assistance during the next few days to the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MEK) terrorist organization, pointing out that some members of the leadership of the MEK reside in Israel have become clients.

An editor of the Israeli newspaper reported that one of the leading members of the MEK, who lives in Israel, met with senior officials in the intelligence service to request financial assistance, pointing out that the amount of this financial assistance was not known.

According to the Israeli press, the Israeli financial grant to the organization comes after the MEK promised to provide detailed and accurate information about Iran’s nuclear facilities, stressing that Israel had previously given financial and in-kind assistance to the organization over three stages.

The MEK’s press release some days ago contained empty information and was without basis for the existence of a secret nuclear facility in the city of Isfahan, Iran. The information, which mentioned a site called “Tbeka” from Israeli intelligence, was welcomed by some Israeli media and the American, British and French.

The article concluded that some of the members and the leadership of the MEK residing in Israel have become agents for this entity [Mossad], and are trying to do much to fanfare this information to prevent reaching an agreement between Iran and Western nations over Iran’s nuclear program at the start of the Geneva talks.

UNHCR urges states to relocate former residents of Camp Ashraf

Press Releases, 19 November 2013

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) calls for renewed efforts from states to relocate former Camp Ashraf residents, also known as Camp New Iraq.

Since the 1 September 2013 attack on Camp New Iraq where 52 residents died, there has been limited progress in moving the remaining residents to a third country. UNHCR encourages all Member States to share in the international efforts, admit residents and offer them a long-term solution.

UNHCR and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) also call upon the Government of Iraq to take all possible measures to ensure the safety of the residents. UNHCR and UNAMI remain gravely concerned about the fate of seven missing individuals formerly residing in Camp New Iraq who disappeared on 1 September and call on the authorities to locate them, ensure their wellbeing and safeguard them against any forcible return.

Since 2011, UNHCR, together with UNAMI, has been engaged in an effort to find relocation opportunities outside Iraq for some 3,200 former residents of Camp New Iraq. In total, UNHCR has so far been able to secure the relocation to third countries of 300 residents.

Iran Interlink Weekly Digest

Iran Interlink Weekly Digest – 30

+ One article by M. Eftekhari is about Massoud Rajavi. He compares Rajavi with Don Quixote; how, as much as people tell him he is living in a dream world, he is still fighting windmills. He says the difference between the fictional and real character is that Rajavi is forcing others to go to their deaths for his madness.

++ This week’s guests on Mardom TV were Massoud Jabani and Mohammad Razaghi. They explained in detail various aspects of how the MEK deceive and con people on the internet and in real time to get money out of them. They also talked about how the MEK treated their own members in their prisons and their relations with the Israeli right wing. Massoud Jabani has described the MEK as ‘living as a wedge in the gap’, meaning they find a gap and jump into it. Their whole existence is and has been to work against peace and to live on war.

++ The MEK announcement this week that they had discovered a new nuclear site in Iran was ignored by news outlets. Many critics have written about why the MEK has done this and why they chose a notorious torturer in Saddam’s prisons, Mehdi Abrishamchi, to front this. Some say the MEK is ‘more Catholic than Netanyahu’. So that while Netanyahu at least works hard to save face in his own country to survive the criticism that he is torpedoing the nuclear talks, Rajavi has become a liability for all his backers by jumping in and declaring ‘I am a western mercenary’, and he won’t go away. Others refer to the past history of the MEK and how they pretended to be anti-Israeli just a decade ago. On the subject of Abrishamchi, many have pointed out the fact that although he is a dirty face, he has been chosen because he is the first husband of Maryam Rajavi and ever since he was forced to be the first to congratulate his wife on divorcing him and marrying his closest friend he has been kept as part of this threesome.

++ The bombing at Iran’s embassy in Lebanon was so horrifying that it was condemned by every side, US, Russia, Europe etc. The MEK were the only so-called opposition which did not condemn it, and this led some people to the interpretation that they were involved; evidenced by their support for Jaish Al Adl and other groups just a week before. These critics believe the MEK are not capable of being used as a terrorist group and are now being used as cheerleaders for terrorism.

++ In Iraq, Valid Alhelli MP, from the governing coalition, referred in an interview to the MEK’s massacre of many Iraqis in the north and south on the order of Saddam Hussein. He reiterated that their presence in Iraq violates the Iraqi constitution.

++ Abbas Albayati MP, from Iraq’s Security and Defence Committee also mentioned the MEK in an interview, saying, ‘we see no difference between this group, Al Qaida and the terrorist groups working in Syria. Therefore we have to dismantle their system and throw them out.’

++ Five hundred participants attended a Seminar at Baghdad University on November 16 on the subject of terrorism and specifically the Mojahedin Khalq. The Seminar was organised by Dr. Nafeh Isa and included several NGOs, many members of parliament and other officials who attended and gave speeches. Adnan Alshahmani, member of the Security and Defence Committee responsible for overseeing the expulsion of the MEK from the country, referred to the European Union and its responsibility to be active in taking in these people as soon as possible. He said, ‘the EU told us clearly they would remove the MEK from the terrorism list in order to allow them to come to Europe. But although they did the first part, they have not done the latter’. He said, ‘I can understand they have the same problem we have with this group and they are afraid of accepting them on their own soil, but they have promised something and they have not done it’.

Adnan Seraj head of the Information Centre of Iraq gave a speech and referred to documents which show the MEK are still part of the security problem of Iraq and should therefore be dealt with as criminals under the law. He reminded participants that 50 MEK leaders are wanted by international courts and Interpol, and 126 are fugitives wanted by Iraqi courts. Mazhar Abbas head of the Bani Tamin tribe spoke on behalf of all the tribes who have come together to unanimously demand the expulsion of the MEK from Iraq. An exhibition of pictures, documents and books was also on display. Among the prominent speakers was Dr Mowafaq Al Rubai, former national security advisor to the government. He emphasised that it is unfortunate that there is still some support within some circles for this terrorist group. He said they should not be in any doubt that this mistake will, sooner or later, bear a heavy price as the MEK are trained by Saddam’s Republican Guard and have no respect for the life of anyone. Many of the MEK have moved to these camps because they were fugitives in either European, North American or other countries.

The MEK reacted not after the event but the day before under then pseudonym of the NCRI, threatening that anyone who attends tomorrow will be known as an agent of the intelligence ministry of Iran.

++ In the ongoing saga of the hunger strike, it has now passed the 80th day and since it has become ridiculous the MEK announced that a few individuals have been transferred to hospital just before they nearly died. The MEK are under severe criticism by their own supporters. They say that the deaths of 36 and then 52 in Camp Ashraf are not enough for Rajavi and he still needs more blood by trying to kill them under the pretext of hunger strike. Many criticise Rajavi saying that although he claims to know that the seven missing people are being held by Iraq, he never shows any evidence to say how. Hadi Afshar (Saeed Jamali) has addressed Rajavi directly with the challenge that ‘Maryam Rajavi’s latest show in Paris last week was attended by what she calls 600 VIPs. Couldn’t these 600 help the remaining people get out of Iraq or could they not be helpful in presenting your documents – which you claim to have – in a court in the West.’

++ In America, in answer to Ros Lehtinan – the MEK’s main benefactor in the Senate and Head of the Middle East sub-committee of the Foreign Affairs Committee – the State Department representative who recently visited Camp Liberty said he has evidence that the seven missing people are not in the hands of Iraq.

++Irandidban has published an article with bullet points demonstrating that Rajavi is trying to somehow eliminate the seven missing people, For example, Rajavi claims that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard have been working with the Iraqi government to kidnap only seven people. He then announces that every day they are under torture and will be killed soon. When on 13th November a representative from the US Department of State answered that there is evidence they are not in the hands of Iraq, the MEK give no reaction but pretended nothing had been said and instead asked President Obama to intervene on their behalf with the government of Iraq. It can be read from these actions that Rajavi wants to kill them and blame Iran and Iraq.

++ An article on Irandidban website describes Rajavi as swinging from one benefactor to another after the fall of Saddam and refers to the latest speech by Maryam Rajavi who claims that all terrorist activity, from Al Qaida to Hizbollah, and what happens in Yemen and Syria, are all part of a network of terrorism run from Tehran. And on top of all this the nuclear bomb which Iran has is no longer aimed at Europe but is now aimed at Saudi Arabia. Her solution is that because Iran is anti-Arab therefore all the Arab countries should unite – presumably under the umbrella of Rajavi – to fight Iran. Maryam Rajavi has forgotten that she was thrown out of Iraq and is being kept in France for a rainy day and that her so-called backing of Syrian terrorists has backfired and neither the West nor Arab countries would want the MEK to be part of any of their activities let alone gather under her umbrella. Basically she is talking nonsense.

++ Hamed Sarafpoour has responded to an article by Esmail Vafa Yaghmai who writes in detail about the mentality of a member of the MEK; basically, short of naming it a cult, describes exactly how a cult operates. Sarafpour has welcomed his progress, that he can see that much, but reminds him that those who have previously gone through this know he has not gone halfway yet to understand how he and others have been affected. He encourages Yaghmai to continue undergoing this difficult process of understanding in order to help himself and others.

++Many refer to Rajavi’s advertising that the hunger strikers are going to die, including Maryam Sanjabi who has published some facts about Rajavi’s use of his followers’ blood over the history of the organisation. She concludes that nobody but Rajavi himself is responsible for this.

++ Mohammad Rahbar, a famous green movement leader, noted on Ruzonline where Mehdi Abrishamchi, who announced the so-called nuclear discovery earlier this week, has come from; how he became a member of Saddam’s Security Services, how he stayed alive during Operation Eternal Light by staying well behind the lines and how he survived the bombardment of Iraq and ended up with Maryam Rajavi in Paris. Rahbar says to Abrishamchi, ‘instead of finding ridiculous ‘sites’ and telling stories to the rest of the world, you should come clean and explain, among other things, how your wife suddenly became your sister and married your friend.”

++ Hadi Afshar published an article about the hunger strike called ‘removing all trace’. He points out that many people don’t really know who Rajavi is unless they have lived with him. When the Americans invaded Iraq in 2003 Rajavi ordered that everybody’s cupboard, every supporter’s house and every archive of the MEK be searched to remove the history of the MEK so they wouldn’t find anything anti-American. Afshar says Rajavi and the world know that four witnesses are better than two in a court of law and therefore the hunger strike is aimed at killing as many as possible who are witness to his activities. “Rajavi claims that 7 members were taken hostage by Iraqis and Iranians, I’m not sure about that but I clearly see that the rest of the 3000 have been taken hostage by Rajavi himself and he will do his utmost to kill every one of them to remove any trace of his crimes.”

++ Adel Azami wrote a short article directed at Massoud Rajavi in which he refers to some of the letters which had been forcefully obtained from members and which the MEK publish. One of them published this week had been supposedly written by Ismael Yaghmai 30 years ago, and judged against his current position the MEK now claim he has betrayed the organisation. Azami says, “Rajavi. Your corrupt ideology and your criminal activities can only be considered as betrayal since 30 years ago our agreement with you was not that you sell us to Saddam Hussein, nor that you give information about Iranian people to the army of Iran’s enemy during the eight year war, nor that against every interest of the people of Iran who are suffering under sanctions and hardship you go hand in hand with Netanyahu and push for war against the Iranian people. We agreed that you be our leader, not go into hiding for ten years. If, in your opinion, that letter shows the progress of Yaghmai’s betrayal, then what can we call what you have done over thirty years. You have changed your word, not Yaghmai.”

Mujahedin Khalq Organization's Propaganda System

The Nightmare of Diplomacy for the MKO

What’s the Mujahedin Khalq Organization (the MKO) up to as the Iranian delegation and p5+1 are meeting The Nightmare of Diplomacy for the MKOtoday to resume negotiations aimed at agreeing on a comprehensive deal?

The MKO propaganda arm National Council Resistance is making efforts to prevent any possible deal between Iran and the World power as they have been doing so forever. Furthermore, to the world’s surprise the so-called revelations have never been published through the big media in the West which are more reliable to obtain intelligence information on the Iranian nuclear activities having access to the most credible spying facilities and equipments and satellites belonging to their states. Thus any new earthworks and construction, especially within a military site, would have been observed – and already been in news headlines, if this were the case. The mainstream media have had nothing to back the allegations but Only the unfounded claims of an exiled Iranian group with a mixed track record of violence and cult-like behavior.

The recent claim of the MKO PR apparatus pairs up with the Israeli fear mongering attempts to stop any deal that may lift sanctions on Iran. The Israeli Haaretz reported that the US President has briefed the Congress concerning talks in Geneva on Wednesday. "The Administration has also been talking to Jewish leaders in an effort to counteract Prime Minister Netanyahu’s arguments against the proposed agreement," added Haaretz. "Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday show yesterday, Netanyahu said that the “exceedingly bad deal” currently under discussion would only increase Iranian motivation to secure a nuclear weapons, cause the sanctions to “crumble” and inevitably lead to a “point where your only option is a military option.”[1]

Still "unmoved" by repetitive disinformation endeavors by the MKO, Reuters notified," Accusations the NCRI made in July and October about secret nuclear sites drew a wary international response, while the United States expressed skepticism about another claim in 2010." [2]

Accusations in July, October, and November along with other baseless accusation other accusations made by the MKO PR machine have often been made when MKO fear that there is a possible improvement in the relationship between Iran and the west. The improvement between the west and Iran will isolate MKO more and more. That is why they try to come up with some unfounded claims

Regarding the MKO, the world community seems sensible enough not to get trapped in  such half truths which are no more reliable than the ones from Iraq, if anybody cares to remember the allegations about WMDs made by Ahmad Chalabi.

The list of enemies of diplomacy with Islamic Republic includes Israel and Gulf States, the MKO, US based Israel lobby and Us Congress.  These enemies have so far made no bones about their opposition to diplomacy with Iran, but reportedly the three of them have been plotting to obstruct negotiations: the MKO, Israel, and Saudi Arabia. “Once the Geneva agreement is signed, the military option will be back on the table,” a diplomatic source familiar with the planning, which is said to include a joint Israeli-Saudi attack on Iran, told Sunday Times. "Both the Israeli and Saudi governments are convinced that the international talks to place limits on Tehran’s military nuclear development amount to appeasement and will do little to slow its development of a nuclear warhead," The Sunday Times report stated.[3]

On the notorious intelligence and military links between the MKO and Israel, there are numerous reports. After the assassination of the Iranian Nuclear Scientist this was unveiled and the cooperation of MKO and Mossad was verified by NBC News. The deductions came true and it the mutual services the MKO and Mossad offer one another were revealed. [4]

The P5+1 will no doubt object to any attack following the diplomacy their diplomacy, though all those who fear the engagement with Tehran are apparently counting on their considerable lobbying powers to prevent any deal from being achieved.

Iran Rejects MKO, Netanyahu’s Claims about Undeclared Nuclear Activities as Lies

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan dismissed as “lies” the recent claims made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the terrorist Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO, also known as the MEK, NCRI and PMOI) that Iran has an “undeclared nuclear site” at one of its military facilities.

General Dehqan’s remarks came after MKO claimed that Iran has a nuclear site that it has not declared its presence to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Israeli prime minister has kept repeating MKO’s claims.

“Netanyahu and the terrorist MKO, that share treason and fabrication as their conspicuous characteristics, in a wicked coordination have forged this news report in a bid to undermine and influence the successful diplomacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in their futile dreams,” Dehqan said.

He said the new plot and false claim by Netanyahu and MKO which will not be the last in its kind will be foiled like the previous ones, and reiterated that “such conspiracies can no way undermine Iran’s will to proceed with its peaceful nuclear objectives and continue its rational negotiations with the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany).

Last week, Netanyahu warned the six world powers to give up their present approach in negotiations with Tehran, which diplomats of both Iran and the six world powers say, is much likely to end in an agreement soon.

As western diplomats said they have offered Tehran an ease in sanctions in return for Tehran stopping any further advancement in its nuclear enrichment activities, the Israeli premier said Tel Aviv is against an agreement with Iran that stops short of getting it to halt its uranium enrichment.

“Israel understands that there are proposals on the table in Geneva that would ease the pressure on Iran for concessions that are not concessions at all,” he said, during a speech to the Jewish Agency.

While a nuclear military capability needs uranium enriched more than 90% and Iran has succeeded in enriching uranium to a maximum 20% to feed its nuclear research reactor in Tehran which produces radioisotopes for medical purposes, including cancer treatment, the Israeli prime minister said the 20-percent enrichment capability enables Iran to build an atomic bomb.

“This proposal will allow Iran to preserve its ability to build a nuclear weapon. Israel is completely opposed to these proposals. I believe that adopting them would be a mistake of historic proportions and they should be completely rejected,” he said.

Netanyahu renewed his military threats against Iran, warning that if the present negotiations in Geneva between Iran and the six world powers end in an agreement undesirable to Israel, Tel Aviv might wage an attack on Iran.

He said “anything less” than a complete halt of Iran’s nuclear activities would decrease the chances of reaching an agreement through peaceful means. “Israel always reserves the right to defend itself, by itself, against any threat,” he asserted.

Iran, which says its nuclear program is a peaceful energy project, wants them to start lifting tightening sanctions on its economy.

Both Iran and the six world powers have described the talks as “positive”.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi said he hoped a deal could be struck but that the sides remained far apart.

Mujahedin Khalq Organization's Propaganda System

MKO to launch new propaganda against Iran’s nuclear program

Media reports said on Sunday the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) is trying hard to create obstacles in the way of Iran- 5+1 group talks by staging new round of propaganda against the Islamic Republic.

According to IRNA, the Beirut-based Al-Dayar news website reported that MKO in line with serving the interests of Zionist regime is trying to repeat its baseless allegations about Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.

Al-Dayar reported “The MKO intends to provide certain media with fake and fabricated documents about Iran’s nuclear activities.”

MKO has a track record of making similar allegations before and it had propagated against Iran’s peaceful nuclear program by claiming that the Islamic Republic is trying to gain access to nuclear weapons.

None of MKO’s allegations has been approved by an international body.

The Zionist regime’s discontent with Iran’s gaining access to a limited understanding in Geneva negotiations in recent weeks is regarded the main reason for employing MKO in the new wave of Israel’s spread of lies and fabrications.

Iraqi Authorities' stance on the MEK

Iraqi PM urges MKO supporters to allow in members

A Senior Iraqi lawmaker says the supporters of the terrorist Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) must relocate the group’s members to their own countries.

Abbas al-Bayati told Fars News Agency given the crimes committed by the MKO against the Iraqi people, the continuation of their presence in Iraq was unacceptable.

Referring to the support of a number of European states for the MKO, al-Bayati urged them to relocate the members of the terrorist group to their own countries.

The European Union removed the MKO from its list of terrorist organizations in 2009 after the group filed a petition against the blacklisting in 2008.

The Iraqi lawmaker noted there was no difference between the MKO and al-Qaeda or the terrorist group of “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The MKO is not different from al-Qaeda and the ISIL and other terrorist groups that have killed the innocent people of Iraq, al-Bayati added.

He said some of the group’s members, who face prosecution for the crimes they have committed in several Iraqi cities, such as Karbala, Khanaqin and Tuz Khormato, must stand trial in the country’s courts.

The MKO fled to Iraq in the 1980s, where it received the support of executed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and set up Camp Ashraf in the eastern province of Diyala, near the Iranian border.

The group also cooperated with Saddam in the massacres of Iraqi Kurds and in suppressing the 1991 uprisings in southern Iraq.

The MKO is listed as a terrorist organization by much of the international community and has committed numerous terrorist acts against Iranians and Iraqis.

In December 2011, the United Nations and Baghdad agreed to relocate some 3,000 MKO members from Camp New Iraq (formerly known as Camp Ashraf) to Camp Liberty.

The last group of MKO terrorists was evicted by the Iraqi government on September 11 to join the other members of the terrorist group at Camp Liberty near Baghdad International Airport and await relocation to other countries.

The MEK Expulsion from Iraq

Iraqi NGOs Urge Rapid Expulsion of Mojahedin Khalq

Iraq’s non-governmental organizations (NGOs) asked the Baghdad government to expedite expulsion of the members of the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO, also known as MEK, NCRI and PMOI) from their country.

Several NGOs attending a conference in Baghdad urged the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki to expel the remaining MKO members from Iraq immediately.

Adnan Al-Shahmani, member of the Iraqi Parliament’s National and Defense Committee said that the Baghdad conference has been organized by NGOs in a bid to exert pressure on the government to accelerate expulsion of MKO members.

He noted that there are still more than 2,000 MKO members present in Iraq, although hundreds of others have been sent to other countries.

Abbas Al-Bayati, another participant in the conference, reiterated that MKO plays a dangerous role in Iraq and its presence poses a grave danger to the crisis-hit country.

The last group of MKO terrorists at Camp Ashraf, now called Camp New Iraq, was evicted by the Iraqi government on September 11 to join other members of the terrorist group in the former US-held Camp Liberty, now called Camp Hurriya, near Baghdad International Airport where they are awaiting relocation to other countries.

The MKO, founded in the 1960s, blended elements of Islamism and Stalinism and participated in the overthrow of the US-backed Shah of Iran in 1979. Ahead of the revolution, the MKO conducted attacks and assassinations against both Iranian and western targets.

The group started assassination of the citizens and officials after the revolution in a bid to take control of the newly-established Islamic Republic. It killed several of Iran’s new leaders in the early years after the revolution, including the then President, Mohammad Ali Rajayee, Prime Minister, Mohammad Javad Bahonar and the Judiciary Chief, Mohammad Hossein Beheshti who were killed in bomb attacks by the MKO members in 1981.

The group fled to Iraq in 1986, where it was protected by Saddam Hussein and where it helped the Iraqi dictator suppress Shiite and Kurd uprisings in the country.

The terrorist group joined Saddam’s army during the Iraqi imposed war on Iran (1980-1988) and helped Saddam and killed thousands of Iranian civilians and soldiers during the US-backed Iraqi imposed war on Iran.

Since the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, the group, which now adheres to a pro-free-market philosophy, has been strongly backed by neo-conservatives in the United States, who eventually took the MKO off the US terror list.

The US formally removed the MKO from its list of terror organizations in early September 2012, one week after the then Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, sent the US Congress a classified communication about the move. The decision made by Clinton enabled the group to have its assets under the US jurisdiction unfrozen and do business with the American entities, the State Department said in a statement at the time.
