Margaret Beckett, in her first exclusive meeting with the foreign press in the UK, responded to a question on the MKO and, about why the group was still active in Iraq said:”Britain considers MKO a terrorist organization and opposes this group. However, banning the activities of this group in Iraq is up to the Iraqi government and the US as the commander of coalition forces in Iraq.”

Any statements or declarations made by Iraqi nationals in Iraq about the legal and political status of the”People’s Mojahedin Organisation of Iran”, also known as the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MEK) inside Iraq, are a matter for the Government of Iraq. The MEK is proscribed in the United Kingdom under the Terrorism Act 2000. -
An eminent Iraqi lawyer said that existence of Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) in Iraq is unlawful, said IRNA. Tariq Harb, head of the ‘Population of Disseminating Law Culture in Iraq’, told the Baghdad-based weekly of Al-Shahed that according to the domestic, international and foreign non-governmental laws, existence of MKO in Iraq is illegal.

The IAEA branded the American report”outrageous and dishonest”for asserting that Tehran’s nuclear plans were geared towards weapons. This, of course, was just the latest flare-up in the running debate over Iran’s supposed nuclear ambitions. So where is Washington getting its information? Try an Iranian opposition group known as the Mujahedin-e-Khalq – MeK for short. Given the debacle over Saddam’s non-existent WMDs in Iraq, you’d reckon there’d have to be a touch of caution where Iranian exiles peddling nuclear secrets are concerned.

On the other hand, Mr. Ahmed Bokhari, Director of UNHCR’s Middle East Affairs, announced that the members of MKO can get refugee status (in Iraq or another country) under three conditions:
1. Cutting ties with the Mojahedin-e Khalq organization2. Denouncing terrorist activities (in the past)
3. Giving pledge not to return to terrorism again

During the past few years Mojahedin have employed all their political might to magnify Iran’s nuclear threat to lead on their power struggle to be entrusted the legitimacy of an alternative. As political bankrupts, Mojahedin even lost their last residue of political legitimacy among other opposition who believed in them as ultimate hope.
