National Post

Covering Terrorism in the National Post

Page A12 of the April 29th edition of the National Post makes for an interesting read.

Above the fold, the page is dominated by a huge picture of an April 27th ‘Iranian-American rally in New York to denounce Iran’s continued nuclear activities.’ The picture sits above a commanding headline: ‘Bush tears into Iran over "intransigence".’ Two smaller headlines–‘Deadline Passes’ and ‘United Nations nuclear inspectors stonewalled’–precede Steven Edwards’ byline, whence the usual distortions and glaring omissions begin.

What makes this page interesting is not Edwards’ rehearsal of White House spin, but the placement of the prominent photograph of the ‘Iranian-American rally’ (five columns wide out of a possible six) next to another, shorter story running down the single remaining left-hand column entitled ‘Canada a ‘haven’ for terrorists: Washington,’ by Sheldon Alberts.

Alberts’ story is based on the US State Department’s recently released Country Report on Terrorism, but, ironically, the photograph running next to his article (which is obviously meant to reinforce the Edwards’ story’s point about Iran’s alleged nuclear-weapons program) ends up demonstrating that the United States is, itself, a ‘haven for terrorists.’

The demonstrators the National Post has chosen to feature are holding signs and banners bearing the names and pictures of ‘Massoud Rajavi’ and ‘Maryam Rajavi,’ Iranian exiles who have played a variety of leadership roles in the Mojahidin-e-Khalq (MEK) and its associated organizations over many years. The MEK and its various fronts seek the ‘violent overthrow of the Iranian regime.’

How do I know that about the MEK?

Well, since 1997, the MEK has been considered a terrorist organization by–you guessed it–the US State Department, and is, in fact, listed in section 8 of the very report Sheldon Alberts quotes in calling Canada a ‘safe haven’ for terrorists.

Among the activities ascribed to the MEK by the US State Department are the following:

Killing US civilians and supporting the takeover of the US embassy in 1979.

Killing 70 high-ranking Iranian officials in a 1981 bomb attack.

Assisting the government of Saddam Hussein in its war against Iran, and in the crushing of the of the Shi’ite and Kurdish rebellions following the Gulf War.

This one’s worth quoting in full, because of its similarity to the tactics of Al’Qaeda: ‘In April 1992, the MEK conducted near-simultaneous attacks on Iranian embassies and installations in 13 countries, demonstrating the group’s ability to mount large-scale operations overseas.’

Other assassinations and attempted assassinations.

Sadly, one learns from the BBC, that the MEK enjoys ‘considerable’ support in the US Congress, despite its history of terrorism.

So, let’s review:

To bolster a story portraying Iran as a global renegade, the National Post runs a huge picture of what can only be called US-based supporters of terrorism (according to the US State Department’s own definition, that is), and, furthermore, it runs this picture next to another article criticizing Canada for being a ‘haven’ for terrorists and their supporters.

The ironies are almost too many to count.

I guess we could laugh this whole thing off, except that we know our governments in the US and Canada (and their friends in the media) repeatedly tell us that we’re engaged in a ‘war on terror,’ and need to do whatever it takes to stop the ‘terrorists’ from destroying democracy, freedom and civilization itself.

In fact, as the supporters of an acknowledged terrorist organization march freely in New York, receiving ‘considerable’ support in the US Congress and benign coverage in the National Post, what we do learn is what the so-called ‘war on terror’ is all about: It’s a war on ‘their’ terror against ‘us.’

As for ‘our’ terror against ‘them’…

Mujahedin Khalq 's Function

MKO’s Financial Sources

According to the media reports, during the 17 June raid, the French Police discovered and confiscated more than a million US dollars in 100 banknotes and 100.000 Euros in MKO’s headquarters situated in Auvers-Sur-Oise, and more than 8 millions dollars in cash in various offices of the MKO as well in the houses of its high-ranking officials throughout France. Of course, the sum has been never returned to the organization and the group is banned of any fundraising activities inside France and in those countries that have blacklisted it as a terrorist group. The question is who is feeding MKO and what are the financial sources?

An exiled group likes MKO, claiming to be an alternative for the current Iranian ruling system, that has to spend huge sums for its insiders’ expenses, rallies and meetings, sumptuous banquets, lobbying activities and more and more, a look at its media propagandas explains enough, can never be run merely depending on charities and fundraising activities in the streets of Western countries. Once in Iraq under Saddam, the group enjoyed Saddam’s donated dollars; the regime paid it as middleman for illegal oil, arms and chemical dealings. During the past three years, financial section has also been activated in Iraq and with bringing goods from turkey to Iraq and selling it by MKO’s dealers in Iraqi market or similar activities.

The French judiciary has exonerated none of the MKO’s previous terrorist and money laundering charges and the file is fully open. In Western countries, business in the field of real estate, stock market, gold, electronic devices and … are of the activities of the group. Apart from political and legal scams of Mojahedin during these yeas including receiving tens of thousands of dollars from refugee and immigration organization (for the refugee right of the members and supporters), Mojahedin have had obvious financial ties with world’s intelligence services. Mojahedin have been careful in conducting this, in order to hide it.

In an article by Soraya Sepahpour-Ulrich, Why This Axis?, published in payvand.com, she criticizes the US administration in failing to track down the money activities of MKO:

Yet in spite of its sophistication, its groundbreaking and lawbreaking efforts, this [the US] administration has failed to track down the money that feeds the Mojahedeen-e Khalg (MEK) in Iraq; and the transactions the terrorist group make here in the United States.. . One must surely wonder how our finest who can handpick 400-500 ‘terrorists’ among untold hundreds of thousands and retain them for years in Gitmo, cannot trace money back and forth between 4000 terrorists (who are given ‘protected persons status’) under their very noses. This lack of intelligence gathering is incomprehensible – dismal at best.

MEK Camp Ashraf

Camp Ashraf Residents Need Help

It seems that the new Iraqi government intends to expel not only the foreign forces but also all the outlawed groups including Mojahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) regardless of the group’s initiated vast propaganda blitz to stabilize its stay in Iraq. As confirmed by Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani on July 6 in a meeting with his Iranian counterpart "MKO is under the protection of the US army and we will expel them permanently after the foreign forces leave our country".

Since early 2003, soon after the fall of Saddam, the American forces took total control of Camp Ashraf, MKO’s main base. Massoud Rajavi’s whereabouts is a matter of conjecture and nearly all ranking cadres are scattered in the European countries. At the present, there is no official report about the exact number of the member residents of this camp and they are barred from making any contact with the outside world. Many of these camp residents yearn to dissociate, as reported by those who have left the group, but there is a problem; no international, humanitarian organizations supervise this camp.

Considering the serious situation within Camp Asharf and the ever increasing possibility of their expulsion by the Iraqi Government, the interference of the international and humanitarian organizations seems to be a matter of urgency. As the majority of these members’ families live in Iran, most of them may wish to return to their home country in spite of the rumors that might be tried for their connection with a terrorist group. Iranian authorities have issued a general amnesty for those members whose hands are clean of peoples’ blood.

A visit by authoritative, responsible organizations to register the insiders and hold an interview with them in a friendly atmosphere may put an end to the plights of them all.

Duplicity of the MEK nature

Mujahedeen, the master of bluffing

The Europe governors, who are going to put impact on their negotiation with the regime of Iran, utilize the Mujahedeen specially Maryam Ghajar who has a black dossier in terms of terrorist actions as the entertainers through the retired political factors.

Whenever the Mujahedeen perform the political projects optionally, they propagandize for some weeks, but in this case there was no advertising.

It is notable that when the political factors became aware about their mistakes, they deported Maryam immediately, but the Mujahedeen who have been completely disgraced tried to issue some peculiar bluffs.

The Mujahedeen have been brought to parliament suddenly and forcefully, so they had no special scenario.

Bluffing is a characteristic of the members of Mujahedeen which has been taught by their leader. Rajavi, who put all his attempts for Saddam in his everlasting lie, now tries to present his content victory and declares that they were able to get to Tehran, but there had been some reasons to avoidance.

During the deporting from France in 1995, Maryam declared that there was no need to do political activities, and they should continue with army activities.

When the Mujahedeen were captured by Americans and lost all their weapons they began to talk about the cease-fire with Americans to prevent their disloyalty.

The other bluffing by Mujahedeen was their backward point of views in spying and acting against the national interests of Iran. They regarded their spying as a kind of duty and a symbol of glory.

During the student movement in Tir 18, 1378 the Mujahedeen represented a funny bluffing. They introduced some unreal names and claimed that they have headed that movement. According to some of the detached members of the Mujahedeen, at first they introduced the names of some of prisoners. Then these prisoners were left in the frontier to be arrested by the regime. In this way, they could claim that they had been active in the Student Movement. What a plenty of crimes!

Duplicity of the MEK nature

Saddam Devotees Hail Community of Strategy with Iraqis

It is common in political sphere for two political currents to concur in a community of strategy when they have mutual political axes to grind. The alliance does not necessarily mean that they have to reconcile with each other’s different ideologies. Years before the Islamic revolution, for instance, Mojahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) and People’s Fedayan Militia, two ideologically different campaigning anti-monarchical movements, formed an alliance against Shah’s regime and the US imperialism.

Iraqi people in general, regardless of being Kurds, Shiite and Sunni, advocated a community of strategy in their struggle to topple Saddam’s regime. Even the pro-Saddam factions in creating post-Saddam disorders moved on a line of consensus strategy.

With these preliminaries in mind, it was shocking to hear Dowlat Nowrouzi, the MKO’s representative in UK, saying “Mojahedin-e Khalq have a community of strategy with Iraqi people”. Before going any further, it should be noted that MKO have developed a comprehension of the magic role the numbers and statistics play in today’s political world and the adopted Western policies according to these figures. As a result, MKO have developed a talent of digging statistics out of any performed tasks. The significance lays in the fact that rarely the tally of these figures, being multiplied by a favored coefficient, are reliable as authentic. That is to say, the promulgated figures are too much exaggerated to be accepted.

MKO has been on this path from the beginning. Once, soon after the Islamic revolution, they announced that more than 150,000 rallied in Amjadieh soccer stadium in Tehran. The stadium in full capacity, according to mathematical evaluations, could entertain a crowd of not exceeding 30,000. Later, on the anniversary of the 20 June event, MKO’ TV reported a rally of 200,000 in the same place. Even on the 20 June 1981, the day MKO organized a protesting rally in different Iranian cities, MKO announced a swarm of 500,000 sympathizers in Tehran’s streets never thinking of the destructive potentialities of such a crowd if they really existed; demonstrators were easily dispersed and the irritated MKO announced armed struggle against the Islamic Republic.

Last year, MKO reported the declaration of 2,800,000 Iraqi people issued in support of MKO. This year, the number has increased to 5,200,000. Regardless of the authenticity of so big a figure, the Iraqi supporters of MKO are nearly multiplied, that is to say, a nearly 100 percent increase. More above that, according to reports broadcasted on 8 July by the group’s TV, as any single vote of this big figure represents an Iraqi family of five, consequently, it can be multiplied by 5 to reach a total figure of 26,000,000 supporters.

On 20 June, MKO reported that 300,000 French citizens had urged support for Maryam Rajavi. Then, they concluded that as any single vote of these French citizens represented a French family of three, so the number of supporters reached a total 900,000.

At the present, MKO claims the Islamic Republic has so far executed 120,000 members of the group. The number of the executed in 1987, the year they settled in Iraq, did not exceeded 20,000. It is not amazing to see the number jumping to such an extent because the “martyrs” have gone through the coefficient system of the organization. In another instance, Ebrahim Khodabandeh, a high-ranking separated member, admitted that once in a meeting of the European parliamentarians he had claimed, as was dictated by the organization, that about 300,000 political prisoners were under regular and daily torture in Iranian prisons. As he said, he never thought of a simple fact that if any of these prisoners were to be tortured by nothing more than a quick slap, what a great number of guards and torturers had to be provided! There are more and more examples of these kinds.

Accordingly, depending on case and place, they make the most of the words rather than the numbers. Seemingly suffering hypomnesis to remember what they have stated or done earlier, or maybe they think people are inattentive and unmindful, MKO expatiate on something they had controverted before. An organization commonly known to have formed a close alliance with Saddam, leaps forward to proclaim they “have a community of strategy with Iraqi people”. The words indicate that they have been in the same front along with Iraqi people in their struggle against the ousted dictator! That they too were victimized and oppressed under the tyranny of Saddam and the Baathists! That they are naturally democratic and advocates of freedom!

If uncertain about anything of Mojahedin’s past, the world vows that MKO was the most enthusiastic, strategic alliance of Saddam. The evidence? They were given land to establish a “city” of their own. With Saddam’s donated dollars in their pockets, armed with Iraqi weapons, and trained under Iraqi officers they recurrently violated Iranian borders at a time when Iranian were busy dealing with Saddam’s assault. Any body in doubt? They were the most trustworthy forces cooperating with the terrible Iraqi intelligence system. They had the permission to freely move around Iraq carrying arms. They gladly accepted the mission to have a key role in suppressing the insurgent Iraqi Kurds. They put their unsatisfied insiders in the same gruesome, terrific cells of the notorious Abu-Ghorib prison where the dissidents of Saddam’s regime had been consigned to oblivion. A look at videotaped secret meetings of Saddam’s high-ranking officers with MKO’s heads seems to suffice.

To “have a community of strategy with Iraqi people”, Mojahedin have to prove they have been their brothers in hardship. They proved it, not for people, but for Saddam. They were ready to sacrifice their life for Saddam. Once Maryam Rajavi announced that all girls and women under her command were ready to fight shoulder to shoulder with Iraqi forces to die for the great leader Saddam Hussein as she did.* Of course, no body can blame them for what they fail to remember!

To achieve their objectives, Mojahedin never care whose body they crush under their feet. The advocates of Machiavellianism deny the relevance of morality in political approaches and strictly hold that collusion, treachery and deceit are justified in pursuing and maintaining political objectives. They needed and need to survive. Once they colluded with Saddam and today they move on a treacherous line to deceit Iraqi people. The fact is that they have no community of strategy with anyone.

Mujahedin Khalq Organization as a terrorist group

A”nice-sounding”name won’t change terrorist nature of MEK

A reliable source has informed Iran-Interlink that neoconservatives in the US administration directly instructed the Mojahedin Khalq (MEK) several weeks ago to create "some nice-sounding NGOs" so that they can be funded under the 75 million dollars funding project which was approved to "promote democracy" in Iran.

America knows, historically, that creating and supporting terrorist groups is not in the long-term interests of that nation. It is not possible to use ‘good terrorists’ to fight ‘bad terrorists’. The problem with the MEK is not that they don’t have money and not that they are not already getting money from various sources. The problem is that they are too dirty so that after twenty five years everyone knows them. They are hated throughout the world by Iranians and non-Iranians alike.

Even if the MEK were to receive the full 75 million dollars – which is of course supposed to be distributed among several ‘opposition’ groups – this would still not be a fraction of the support they received from Saddam Hussein for over two decades, and for which they have absolutely nothing to show as a result.

‘The Association of Criminals’

Mojahedin / National Council of Resistance of Iran – ‘The Association of Criminals’

The judge in France, who is prosecuting Rajavi’s gang for illegal and criminal charges, has rightly called this group”The Association of Criminals”.

This, above all, shows the depth of the judge’s recognition of the nature and behavior of the MKO.

Abulghassem Rezaee, one of 17 members of this association, has given some explanation about the recent decision of the appeals court (to lift some restrictions on MKO), which itself displays the critical situation of MKO in France.

Rezaee, as the one who is fully aware of the case’s details, while trying not to reveal much, admits that:

1. MKO’s case is still open. He says that the case is practically open and that regime (read”French Judiciary”) will try again to keep it open.

2.”Our lawyers had asked the judge to lift the restrictions and bans. As we expected, the judge refused and we took it to appeals court”. So, the judge of the case is opposed to lifting these restrictions.

3.”Chief of France’s Counter-Espionage Office said it was right to destroy a terrorist organization.”This means that France’s intelligence services are wholly against the Rajavi’s band, which is the result of 25 years experience of countering the deceptions of MKO.

4.”Those countries whose security services investigated MKO supporters know that they can do nothing; they can’t stop our political works and resistance against theocracy in Iran. During past 3 years, we have won all courts we were taken to.”This means that Europe’s security officials are opposed to MKO’s illegal activities and that Mojahedin have been forced to accept to only do political works and avoid from violence.

Despite these confessions, MKO’s propaganda system tries to boost the morale of its desperate members by relating the decision of appeals court to the case itself; they stupidly claim:

“The case was based on the claim that some people in France are doing terrorist activities. They had even coined the name of”The Association of Criminals”for the MKO. With baseless charges, they created some restrictions for the officials of resistance to cut their relations with activities. When the court cancels the ruling it means that whole charges were baseless.”

This claim is so invalid that Rezaee himself admits to the hatred of European officials for the MKO and says:

“Informed sources quoted a European government saying that when MKO is bombed, more than half of them will go to Iran and others will disperse; then we can deal with remaining small groups”.

In addition, Rezaee refers to the measures taken by the US and Europeans after 9/11 and that how, in line with fighting terrorism, they controlled the group. However, MKO still tries to attribute all this global opposition (to Rajavi’s group) to Iran!

MKO and Sharing Strategic Interests with Iraqis

In a speech made in a rally organized by NCRI, Mojahedin Khalq Organization’s (MKO) political wing active in France, in Paris on July 1, 2006 Dowlat Nowrouzi, NCRI’s UK representative, referred to the organization’s widely advertised claim of 5200000 Iraqi people’s supporting MKO’s presence in Iraq and stated that “the organization shares common strategic interests with Iraqi people in accomplishment of peace and democracy”. Her words, a clear MKO’s paradoxical stance, are an affront to Iraqi people. She seems to have a weak memory to remember that MKO’s settlement in Iraq was the outcome of a made alliance with Saddam who led a dictatorial, tyrannical rule over Iraq and that, MKO acted as his mercenaries to suppress peoples’ freedom-seeking moves in Iraq.

How she has found “common strategic interests” is a question Nowrouzi should give an answer to, something she never does as it is Mojahedin’s convention. If it means sympathizing with Iraqi people’s struggle to accomplish demands of democracy and freedom pursuant to the country’s religious, cultural, and traditional conventions, no doubt, MKO’s strategy has proved to be in absolute contradiction with that of people. The group’s stance towards Iraqi political bodies and parties after Saddam’s fall and its policy of advocating disorder to survive in no way comply with peoples demands.

Before anything else, Iraqi people in an abundantly clear voice cry out for Saddam’s just trial for his overt and covert crimes done against the nation. MKO have yet shunned taking a clear position meaning they, too, bore the sin of a close collaboration with the fallen dictator whom they regarded, according to evidences, brother beyond a patron. The existing evidences unveil that Nowrouzi’s words are exactly the same as those that once were addressed to Saddam and his generals by Massoud Rajavi. At timely, regular meetings with Iraqi army and intelligence officials, Massoud Rajavi again and again paid homage to Saddam and talked of the necessity of close cooperation to safeguard common interests. In the irrefutable videotaped meetings between Massoud Rajavi and General Saber, the head of Saddam’s Intelligence Services, once Rajavi stated:

As far as we are concerned I have only one thing to say. In my mind and in my heart, I cannot separate the account of our interests from your interests. They are exactly matching each other….The reality is that our interests match each other and are closely mixed together. *

For sure, the interests of MKO in the reign of Saddam matched that of the dictator which was in contrast to the interests of people. In fact, the only thing Saddam did not account and had no concern for were people and their interests. It is not amazing to see MKO undergoing a sudden change overnight; they call it “strategy”.

Who can deny Saddam’s horrible, gruesome cells in Abu-Ghurib prison where MKO enjoyed possession of a few granted cells to utilize as suppressive means against its dissidents? Dissidents were a challenge both for Iraqi regime and MKO and as Rajavi once stated:

Whatever is against you, it is obviously against us, and vice versa. Our security is one. When we receive a blow, it is to both of us.*

The notorious opportunist MKO fish in troubled waters not caring the least for the interests of Iraqi peoples. At the time when the presence of foreign troops has negatively affected Iraq and has escalated turmoil and disorder, MKO is under the protection of the US army. Known as uninvited gusts, MKO intrude in Iraq’s internal affairs and even meddled in the process of elections the same as the remnants of the ousted regime did. Once General Saber appreciated MKO’s standing by Saddam’s regime saying:

We have an Arabic proverb that says: Brothers show themselves in hardship. You supported us with the bodies of your fighters.*

Thus, they had proved to be pro-Saddam fighters. Can they now provide any proof of sharing common interests with Iraqi people? Neither Nowrouzi nor any other MKO insiders can possibly give a distinct answer to the question. Somebody should tell MKO that when the broad day reveals the facts, it is unproductive to bury your head in the sand.

*. The quotes are all from the English transcript of videotaped meetings between Massoud Rajavi and General Saber delineated by Iran-Interlink.com.

Europe

The West cannot take the Mojahedin seriously

In an article by James Graff, “Are The PMOI Iran’s last Hope For A Peaceful Solution?”, TIME Europe has discussed the position of the MKO in the west. Graff wrote:

“…But there are also reasons why Western governments remain wary: among them are the group’s ideological origins in a mixture of Marxism and Islam, the aid they offered to and received from Saddam Hussein, and charges, which they deny, implicating them in terrorist acts in Iran. Many independent analysts, such as Paris-based sociologist Farhad Khosrokhavar, say the group has few supporters inside Iran.

The PMOI’s terrorist listing was first secured nine years ago as a concession to the reformist government of Mohammed Khatami, but it has been consistently renewed since then. A legal challenge to the designation was denied in 2004 by the D.C. Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals, in a judgment written by John Roberts, now the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. At Le Bourget, a number of sympathetic politicians spoke in support of the organization, but none who have the ear of sitting governments.

The widow of President François Mitterrand, Danielle, headlined the French contingent, which also featured Edith Cresson, whose stints as prime minister and European Commissioner brought her little credit. And so the battle continues. The Le Bourget gathering had the harmless character of a political rally-cum-family reunion rather than the menace of a terrorist conclave. But the PMOI represents a Third Way the West is still unlikely to embrace — even if it has no other good options either.
