Shiite leader takes up Mojahedin Khalq Organisation (MKO), mass graves with human rights minister

BAGHDAD, Aug. 30 (VOI) – The deputy head of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council (SIIC), Ammar al-Hakeem, on Saturday discussed with Iraqi Human Rights Minister Wejdan Mikhaeel measures taken to deal with the issues of Mujahideen Khalq Organization (MKO) and mass graves.

"Sayyid Ammar al-Hakeem on Saturday morning received Wejdan Mekhaeel, the human rights minister, at his office in Baghdad," according to a release issued by the SIIC as received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"The two sides conferred on human rights issues, especially those related to the government measures taken to deal with the MKO file, in addition to the mass graves left by the former regime," it added.

The MKO, a group opposing the Iranian regime, has taken the Ashraf camp, (57 km) northeast of Baghdad, as a base since the 1980s, as the former Iraq regime cooperated with that organization during the Iraq-Iran war (1980-1988).

The SIIC, itself formed in Iran in the 1980s under its older name the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), had a military wing (Badr Brigade) that fought side by side with the Iranian army against the Iraqi troops during that war.

Iraqi army in control of Mojahedin Khalq camp

Iraq’s army has finally gained control of a camp holding anti-Iran terrorists after five years, says an Iraqi military official.

Major General Mohammed al-Askari, spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Defense, told Iraqi al-Forat TV that a battalion of military forces has surrounded Camp Ashraf of the Mujahedeen Khalq Organization (MKO) since Wednesday night, Fars News Agency reported.

The action came after the Iraqi government pressured the US forces in Iraq to end its support for the group and give the army control of the camp two months ago.

According to reports, some 3,400 MKO terrorists remain in Camp Ashraf situated in Diyala province, 60 kilometers north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

Earlier, The Iraqi government and parliament announced that they are seeking a rapid final solution to remove the remaining members of the MKO from Iraq and shut down Camp Ashraf.

Iraqi officials say the group is playing a significant role in violence and insecurity in the country.

Along with at least six other sites in Iraq, Camp Ashraf was given to the MKO as their headquarters and training site by the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein.

It was from this base the MKO launched operations against Iran during the Iran-Iraq war and later assisted Saddam in violently suppressing the Iraqi Kurds during the 1991 uprising.

The MKO is blacklisted by many countries including EU member states as a terrorist organization. The group has claimed responsibility for hundreds of terror attacks inside Iran.

Change in UK relations not on Iran agenda

Despite a UK court ruling to lift a ban on Mojahedin Khalq terrorists, Iran has no plans to lower its diplomatic presence

Despite a UK court ruling to lift a ban on MKO terrorists, Iran says it currently has no plans to lower its diplomatic presence in Britain.

Iran’s ambassador to London briefed the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission in the Majlis on Sunday, causing members of Parliament to call on the government to reconsider the extent of relations between the two countries.

UK support for the outlawed terrorist group, the MKO and its failure to curb drug cultivation in Afghanistan were the main grievances expressed by the lawmakers.

In his weekly press conference on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hassan Qashqavi told reporters that although the Ministry respects the recommendations of the parliamentarians, it ‘currently has no such plan on its agenda’.

Iran-Britain relations ventured into troubled waters after the British government decided to grant knighthood to author Salman Rushdie, despite the publication of his controversial book, The Satanic Verses, which sparked worldwide outrage in the late 1980s.

Iran described the knighthood as ‘a blatant example of the anti-Islamism of senior British officials’. Top officials from certain Muslim countries also called on their government to sever ties with London.

In a recent move, Britain removed the banned Mujahedeen Khalq Organization (MKO) from its blacklist of terror organizations. The MKO has committed acts of aggression against both Iranian and Iraqi nationals and remains banned by the European Union and the United States.

According to the Iranian Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Britain has been provided ample evidence of MKO involvement in terrorist operations against the Iranian nation.

"They have even met with some of the victims of the MKO terrorist acts. Still, the London Appeals Court has permitted a dangerous terrorist group to operate in Britain," reads a letter by the Head of the Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi to his counterpart in the British parliament, Mike Gapes.

Mujahedin Khalq used as a terror tool

The Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO or MEK) is known to be used by Sahar Family Foundation some elements in Pentagon and in the CIA against Iran. These elements consider the terrorists on their side good or useful terrorists. The MKO has always offered its terrorist skills to be used against Iran. After the fall of the former dictator of Iraq they have tried to draw the attention of the US as a substituted in the west for Saddam Hussein.

In an article in the NEWSTATESMAN by John Pilger dated 29 May 2008, it is shown that the MKO is being used by the Bush administration against Iran for terrorist activities, even though the organization has been designation as a terrorist group by the State Department.

Those who would suffer most from such usage of terrorists are the families of the members of the MKO trapped in their base in Iraq called the Ashraf camp. These families’ beloved ones have been used for so long by Saddam Hussein and now they have to see them to be victims again this time by the US.

Sahar Family Foundation certainly denounces such utilization of the mentally and even physically captives in the Ashraf camp and calls all international humanitarian organizations to make sure that the prime victims of a destructive cult (the MKO) are not used again to expand terrorism.

Iraq takes control of Camp Ashraf

Tehran, 26 Aug: After a five-year US military presence and the protection provided by them to the monafeqin in Camp Ashraf [a pejorative that means hypocrites and refers to the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO)], efforts by the Iraqi government have succeed. Yesterday evening, the Iraqi military was able to take over control of the camp.

The al-Forat television network reported that spokesperson for Iraqi defence ministry, Gen Mohammad al-Asgari made the announcement. He said: At this time, the camp is surrounded with support form an Iraqi military battalion and Iraqi forces have placed it inside a security enclosure.

About two months ago, in response to repeated public calls and in line with the national constitution, the Iraqi government asked the US to turn over management of Camp Ashraf to Iraqi forces. The pressure placed on the Americans by the Iraqi government finally succeeded yesterday evening.

Located in Diyala Province, Camp Ahsraf is 45km outside Baghdad. It was gifted to the leader of the monafeqin gang, Masud Rajavi, by Saddam [Huseyn] recognition of his serve

Following the de-proscription of MEK from the UK’s terrorist list and open support of that country for MEK terrorists, more than 10 thousands citizens of Shiraz signed a letter for British Embassy, Tehran. The text of the statement includes:

The Terrorist Hypocrites group (Muajhedin Khalq) was removed from the list of terrorist organizations by British government although it has had a long history of a thousand crimes, treasons, terrors ,assassinations and cooperation with the enemy of Iran during the “ Imposed War” ,spying and even torture against its own members forcing them to commit suicide operations and self – immolation …

It is obvious that the traitor leaders of the terrorist cult are the main criminals who killed the best educated people of Iran and also the innocent civilians, declaring the armed struggle.

Joint Statement of the Nejat Society (Iran) and the Sahar Family Foundation (Iraq and the UK)

Families seek immediate visit with their beloved ones in the Ashraf camp and the accomplishment of the resolution passed by the Iraqi administration.

Regarding the fact that the control of the base of the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) in Iraq called the Ashraf camp, as a part of the Iraqi territory, is going to be handed over to the Iraqi authorities by the coalition forces according to the constitutional law of this country and the resolution passed by the Iraqi government; the families of the members of the MKO who are both mentally and physically captive in the Rajavi’s terrorist cult find it necessary to state the followings:

Once the former dictatorial regime of Iraq was toppled, the families of the captives in the Ashraf camp were optimistic to see an end to their misery and hence visit their beloved ones after in some cases more that 20 years. But when the Ashraf camp fell under the control of the coalition forces and the political interests were at stake once again, the hopes turned into disappointments and the Rajavi’s terrorist cult managed to prevent the free contacts of the families the same as it did under the rule of Saddam Hussein. Therefore more than 5 years passed as before.

During this period the Iraqi government continuously sought to take the control of the Ashraf camp as a part of the Iraqi territory. But the American forces even prevented the warrants of the Iraqi judicial system to be executed and the Iraqi authorities’ investigations in the Ashraf camp to be proceeded. The approaches of the families were always faced with the insulting and harassments of the MKO officials and they did not accept the meetings to take place in the end.

The just demand of the families now is that the free and adequate meetings without the presence of anyone other than the related family members with their beloved ones to be facilitated in a place outside the Ashraf camp. The families are insisting that the resolution of the Iraqi administration to be fulfilled immediately.

The Nejat Society in Iran and the Sahar Family Foundation in Iraq and in the UK are following this case and are pursuing this just requirement through different channels. In this regards the families who are willing to travel to Iraq and see their beloved ones ought to write a letter to the representative office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Tehran similar to the model below and post it to the Nejat Society in Tehran to be followed accordingly by the society. The copy of the letter after translation would be sent to the ICRC in Iraq, the UK, and Switzerland.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation and we are waiting for your reply.

La chute du régime de Saddam Hussein a donné aux familles des prisonniers de la base d’Achraf, dont certaines sont depuis vingt ans sans nouvelles de leurs enfants, l’espoir de voir leur souffrance en fin se soulager. Mais cet espoir s’est vite converti en désespoir car les forces de la coalition ont pris le contrôle de la base d’Achraf et les intérêts politiques sont venus empêcher, cette fois-ci pour cinq longues années, les parents de rendre librement visite à leurs enfants.

Pendant ce temps, les autorités iraqiennes ont, au nom de la souveraineté et de l’intégrité territoriale de leur pays, sans cesse demandé à prendre le contrôle de la base d’Achraf. Les familles, à chaque fois qu’elles ont essayé de voir leurs enfants, se sont faites insulter par les responsables de l’organisation.

Les familles demandent maintenant à pouvoir rendre visite à leurs enfants, librement et seules.

L’association de Nejat en Iran et La Fondation de Sahar pour les Familles en Iraq et en Angleterre, ont suivi cette revendication par différents moyens. Dans ce cadre, il faut que les familles qui souhaitent aller en Iraq pour rendre visite à leurs enfants, recopient la lettre adressée à la Croix Rouge Internationales en Iraq, en Angleterre et en Suisse.

Governor of Khalis: Mojahedin Khalq (Rajavi cult, MEK,MKO) responsible for all violence in Dyali

Staging a protest rally in front of Governor’s building, Hundreds of peoples of Khalis in Iraq called for the expulsion of MKO terrorists from their land.

The protesters, who carried different placards, demanded that the Iraqi government’s security plan should not change into a political issue and must involve all parts of Dyali province.

The demonstrators also declared their demands via the placards for the expulsion of MKO terrorists from Iraq.

Welcoming the movement against the presence of terrorists in Iraq and appreciating the Iraqi government’s recent military operation in Dyali province, the governor of Khalis demanded for the Iraqi government to intensify its operations in the region.

Oday Khedran also called for the presence of the Iraqi military and security forces in all critical parts of Khalis which have now changed into safe shelters for the armed terrorist groups.

He asked the Iraqi security forces to deport MEK terrorists from Iraq as soon as possible. He called MEK a terrorist cult which is responsible for all the existing unrests and violence in Dyali.

N.Y. Judge Green-Lights Trial for Terrorism Case Involving Group Working With U.S. Military

A federal judge in Brooklyn has upheld a terrorism prosecution against a U.S. citizen working for a group violently opposed to the Iranian government.

Zeinab Taleb-Jedi had argued that her indictment for providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization was outrageous because the group to which she belongs, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), has been working with the U.S. military in Iraq.

But such are the fortunes of war, Eastern District of New York Judge Brian M. Cogan ruled in United States v. Taleb-Jedi, 06 cr. 652.

"Foreign relations generally and specifically during a time of war are not black and white, and the PMOI need not be viewed as a monolithic entity," the judge wrote. "It is perfectly permissible for the military to forge alliances with those in the PMOI with whom it wants to deal, while the Government deters through prosecution other individuals, particularly United States citizens, from rendering material support to the organization on their own."

Cogan observed that war itself is an "outrageous, but as determined by other branches of government, sometimes necessary undertaking."

Taleb-Jedi, who was born in Iran, came to the United States in 1978 and became a citizen in 1996. She worked for PMOI in America, then went to Iraq in 1999 to work at the group’s base. Among her activities were teaching English, translating documents and serving as a member of PMOI’s political department.

The U.S. State Department designated PMOI a foreign terrorist organization (listed as "Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization") in 1997, based on its involvement with assassinations and other activities targeting the Iranian government. Questioned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Taleb-Jedi was arrested and charged with providing material support to the group on her return to the United States in 2006.

In addition to arguing that the prosecution should be thrown out, Taleb-Jedi also challenged her indictment on First Amendment grounds, claiming PMOI is not a terrorist organization and that she is entitled to be a member of it.

The judge said any claim that PMOI was not a terrorist organization was complicated by the group’s own acknowledgement of its involvement in assassinations and other violent activities. Moreover, he said, the group’s designation by the State Department fell within the discretion accorded the executive branch in matters of national security.

The rest of her First Amendment challenge failed because, according to the prosecution, she was an employee of PMOI rather than a mere supporter, the judge said. Freedom of speech and association, he said, did not extend to actively working on a terrorist group’s behalf, even if her duties were nonviolent.

The judge noted that many terrorist groups simultaneously engaged in education and social welfare programs. But he said, even if Taleb-Jedi’s work was in a benign area, "she may be freeing up or enabling another person to take part in something far more nefarious."

However, Cogan added, if Taleb-Jedi could advance evidence at trial showing that her participation in PMOI was more passive or explicitly nonviolent in nature, an acquittal might be warranted. For instance, he noted, if her English lessons were solely to help the group advocate before the United Nations, such conduct might not constitute material support.

Taleb-Jedi was represented by Justine Harris of Federal Defenders. In a statement, Harris said she and her client were eager to take the case before a jury.

"Ultimate resolution of many of the legal issues will depend on whether the government can sustain its allegations at trial," said Harris. "At the close of the evidence, we will all have to revisit the substantial First Amendment and Due Process issues at stake."

The government was represented by Eileen M. Decker, of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, as well as Eastern District of New York Assistant U.S. Attorney Kellie T. Currie.

An Urgent Appeal

An Urgent Appeal, for Actions and Initiatives on behalf of Iranians in limbo in Iraq; in Defense of Human Rights and the Right to Asylum

Tragedy is too often the stuff of literature. The majority of people worldwide, try to avoid persons and situations that are shaped by too great a tragedy, concentrating instead on that which is simple and promises some easy resolution

Yet activists are literary figures. They concentrate on human tragedies, not shying away from multi-dimensional problems and readily working towards difficult solutions.

In a region increasingly marked with tragedy , perhaps no story is more tragic than that of the former members of the Iranian Mojahedin Khalq Organization (MKO), who wish to leave their state of limbo in war ravaged Iraq, can not return to Iran and hope for safety, and have not yet managed to gain asylum to any other corner of this earth.

The Iranian poet Shamlou – in his poem “Public Love” – talks of the dead of the year 1953 being the most loving of the living. And we have often repeated this when talking of those who have given their lives in any given year in the still ongoing struggle for freedom and human rights in Iran.

And yet one group of men and women, driven away by the unmet promise of the Iranian people’s revolution and told that if they loved their country and people well enough, they would give up everything and take up arms for just six short months, sought to prove this love by doing just this.

Security, jobs and children even were left behind, as these often young men and women – and some teenagers – left for Iraq , from where this struggle was to take shape.

Yet, each six month term was to be followed up with another, and they who had sought an alternative to two dictatorships within their own country, became victims of their leader’s power fantasies (which with time went as far as forcing all to divorce their partners and ban all other love – except the love for the one power – out of their very hearts) , Saddam Hossein’s war games , and the mind control, punishment routine , beatings and torture by their comrades!

And as the report released in 2005 by Human Rights Watch noted, there was “NO EXIT”![1] They were denied even the freedom to defect or leave. And so they were kept at Camp Ashraf in Iraq until this was turned into Camp “TIPF” , under the charge of US American forces. As hard at conditions were at Camp “TIPF”, with its recent closing the situation of these individuals became even more desperate.

Today, understanding the great and multi-faceted tragedy of these lives held in limbo and under extremely harsh and inhumane conditions , we deem it our responsibility to come to the defense of these fellow Iranians as well as to the defense of the legitimate rights of all political asylum seekers in Iraq. And we call upon all activists and defenders of human rights as well as political organs and organizations to familiarize themselves with this tragedy and – with us – to attempt to bring about a humane solution..
