US and Israel use MEK to commit terrorism-by-proxy

Scott Horton of Antiwar Radio interviewed Philip Giraldi on December13, 2011. In this interview, produced for KPFK 90.7 FM Los Angeles, Former CIA officer Philip Giraldi reprises and expands on his previous interview about his article “Washington’s Secret Wars,” Obama’s newly signed “findings” that authorize covert operations to destabilize the Iranian and Syrian governments, how the US and Israel use the Baluch Jundallah, Kurdish PJAK and MEK groups to commit terrorism-by-proxy, and the MEK’s energetic and well funded campaign to get de-listed as a terrorist group.

Philip Giraldi, a former CIA officer, is a contributing editor to The American Conservative and executive director of the Council for the National Interest. He writes regularly for Antiwar.com.

Below is a brief report on the interview published by Habilian Association.

Philip Giraldi, former CIA counter-terrorism officer and executive director of the Council for the National Interest was interviewed by Scott Horton on Antiwar Radio and elaborated on US and Israeli efforts to destabilize Iran above all the latest assassination.

"I think that’s people who have been recruited by either CIA or Mossad and have been trained and sent back into Iran," said Philip Giraldi regarding the assassins of Mostafa Ahmadi-Roshan, Iranian scientist assassinated in Tehran on Wednesday, January 11, 2012, Habilian Association database (families of Iranian terror victims) reported on Wednesday.

The contributing editor to the American Conservative Magazine added that, "I suspect they (assassins) were recruited out of MEK (Mujahedin-e Khalq) which is why we’re seeing so much stuff in support of MEK coming out of various politicians and other interest groups."
"Because MEK is kind of their boys, their cutting edge in terms of getting inside Iran and carrying out these kinds of operations," Giraldi further explained.

"Because MEK is kind of their boys, their cutting edge in terms of getting inside Iran and carrying out these kinds of operations," included Giraldi, adding that having been an experienced CIA case officer, "I understand how the stuff works a lot better than somebody in a newspaper."

He went on to say that a Mossad or CIA officer does not have the ability to go inside Iran and carry out an operation, concluding that they have acquired somebody else who can do it for them "and in this case there are some obvious candidates, MEK (Mujahedin-e Khalq, MKO) would be I think the most prominent."

He made reference to US and Israeli actions against Syria and Iran and emphasized that in the case of Iran they know they cannot overthrow the regime, adding that, "it’s the question of setting up a bunch of relationships and employing various covert actions to destabilize (and) to make the Iranian government waste a lot of resources on dealing with these problems."

Former CIA agent Philip Giraldi also described the assassinations of Iranian scientists as "to be somewhat ineffective."

We should tackle this issue on the basis of statements which have been made recently by different military and political leaders of Israel and the United States. And if we are not going to be naïve, we should understand that the secret war against Iran has been going already for two dozen of years and in this war there were so many casualties, and the pattern of action of this special services of the United States, of Israel, especially Israel, is so well known that I’m damn sure that the recent killing, the fifth killing of Iranian scientist, is a chain in the long ago devised operation of undermining the Iranian nuclear program.

So, you ask who could do this. Yes, there is a force, which officially is considered by the United States as a terrorist organization – Mujahedin-e Khalq. Unfortunately, these were many years ago a well minded people, young people, revolutionary people with leftwing ideas for the restructuring of Iran. But when Ayatollah kicked them out, they moved first of all to Iraq and were used by Saddam Hussein, who didn’t care about the lives and the ideas of these people, he simply used them against Iran as a force. This force has roots in Iran, it has followers inside Iran, and it is the only force knowing the methods of intelligence operations. It is the only force which could be really summoned for this kind of operations.

Under circumstances this force – Mujahedin-e Khalq became a reactionary group of people, who are more and more inclined for operating terrorist attacks. And they operate for that and there are secret ties, which are not on the surface, of Mossad and other Israeli secret services, between these services and Mujahedin-e Khalq and similar organizations. It is not the only organization of this sort, there are some other too, and their people are constantly used by the Israelis especially, and by the Americans in the second place, to operate against the regime of Ayatollah.

It is a very dangerous game, because we are now in the situation, which is very tense in the Persian Gulf, Hormuz Strait and in the neighbouring of Pakistan. And every negligence of responsibilities, especially on the part of such great powers as the United States, with responsibilities as a guarantor of peace, every attempt to be aggressive and to use force in the area right now is probed with the most terrible consequences.

I hope the Noble Prize winner, which is Mr. Obama, will have enough courage not to act in this kind of situation aggressively, and he will have enough courage to stop those guys in his Administration, I’m quite sure that behind it is Mr. Biden, he has very serious reactionary force, he will not act aggressively in this kind of circumstances, and he will not allow the military operations under any kind of pretext to be taken in the Gulf.

My own confidential Israeli source confirms today’s murder was the work of the Mossad and MEK, as have been a number of previous operations I’ve reported here, reports Silverstein.

The US-backed terrorist group Mujahedeen-e Khalq (MEK), in association with Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, was responsible for today’s car bomb attack in Tehran which killed Iranian nuclear scientist Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, according to Israeli sources close to Jewish writer Richard Silverstein.

The scientist, a specialist working at the country’s Natanz’s uranium enrichment facility, was killed after a magnetic bomb was attached to the side of his car by two men on a motorcycle.

"My own confidential Israeli source confirms today’s murder was the work of the Mossad and MEK, as have been a number of previous operations I’ve reported here," reports Silverstein.

Silverstein’s blog, Tikum Olam, cannot be dismissed as Iranian state media. According to the Daily Telegraph, the blog "has a record of revealing information censored inside Israel" and has been praised as being "important" by Yossi Melman, a veteran security and intelligence reporter for Haaretz.

Silverstein adds that the method of assassination mirrors similar murders carried out by MEK and Mossad in the past. He also cites a Le Figaro piece which documents how, "Iranian assets are being prepared for conducting operations inside [Iran] as part of Israel’s undercover intelligence war against Iran’s nuclear energy program."

An Iranian news agency reports that a fourth Iranian nuclear scientist has been assassinated. Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan was a professor specializing in petroleum engineering at a technical university and director of Natanz’s uranium enrichment facility. Mehr news agency said he was “deputy director of the commercial department of the Natanz nuclear enrichment facility.” He was killed by a bomb attached to the side of his car by two men on a motorcycle. My own confidential Israeli source confirms today’s murder was the work of the Mossad and MEK, as have been a number of previous operations I’ve reported here.

The killing took place at or near a Teheran university. The method recalls another series of assassinations that occurred of Fereidoun Abbassi Davani (who was seriously wounded) and his colleague Majid Shahriari (who was killed). Today’s killing occurred two years to the day after the assassination of another scientist, Masoud Ali Mohammadi.

Reuters also adds this:

An [Iranian ] official [said]…”The bomb was a magnetic one and the same as the ones previously used for the assassination of the scientists, and is the work of the Zionists (Israelis)” Fars quoted Deputy Governor Safarali Baratloo as saying.

Witnesses told Reuters they saw two people on the motorbike stick the bomb to the car.

Time also offers a comprehensive report.

France’s right-wing Le Figaro newspaper offers (this is an English language report on the story) a window into the types of training and recruitment the Mossad engages in to prepare for such sabotage missions. It reports that Israeli agents identify Iranian Kurdish recruits who are living in exile in Iraqi Kurdistan. There they train them in “spycraft and sabotage:”

…The Iranian assets are being prepared for conducting operations inside [Iran] as part of Israel’s undercover intelligence war against Iran’s nuclear energy program. The Baghdad source told the French daily that part of Israel’s sabotage program against sensitive Iranian nuclear facilities, which includes targeted assassinations of Iranian nuclear experts, is directed out of the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan, “where [Mossad] agents have stepped up their penetration.” For this, “the Israelis are using Kurdish oppositionists to the regime in Iran, who are living as refugees in the Kurdish regions of Iraq”, the source told Le Figaro.

Although the article makes no mention of official or unofficial sanction of the Israeli operations by the Iraqi Kurdish authorities, it implies that the alleged Mossad activities are an open secret in Iraqi Kurdistan. This is not the first time that allegations have surfaced in the international press about Israeli intelligence activities in Kurdistan. In 2006, the BBC flagship investigative television program Newsnight obtained strong evidence of Israeli operatives providing military training to Kurdish militia members. The program aired video footage showing Israeli expects drilling members of Kurdish armed groups in shooting techniques and guerrilla tactics.

The Israeli government denied having authorized any such training, while Iraqi Kurdish officials refused to comment on the report. But Israeli security experts told the BBC that it would be virtually impossible for Israeli trainers to operate inside Iraqi Kurdistan “without the knowledge of the Kurdish authorities.”

Iraqi Kurdistan may be one of the few places in the Arab world in which an Israeli is welcome, even Israeli spies.

There also can be little doubt that the U.S. comes into this mix, as the Iraqi Kurdish authorities maintain extremely good relations with U.S. officials in that country. And it’s hard to believe that we aren’t playing a role in expediting this mischief in any way we can.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it every time something like this happens: assassinations like the one today accomplish nothing. It doesn’t fundamentally harm Iran’s nuclear program. It doesn’t deter Iran or its scientists from pursuing the research and whatever scientific goals they may have. These are shameful acts by a shameful Israeli government exploiting Iranian terrorists for their own ends. I find it disgusting that Israel can get away with such acts with impunity.

I am not a supporter of Iran’s nuclear program. But I am even less a supporter of assassination as state policy, and that includes my own nation, whose president seems especially enamored of targeted killings, even of U.S. citizens.

We are a group of former members of pmoi( People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran) who had spent a great deal of their lives in Ashraf garrison and the other bases of this organization in Iraq and during those years we had been witnessing horrifying incidents and events which were all related to human rights and sentimental issues. Around 2 weeks ago on 21 of December 2011 ,you rejected the French government appeal of the European union verdict of 4 of December 2008 related to revoking terrorist label against pmoi and you emphasized and reiterated over delisting of this organization from the terrorist list and you called the French appeal request as an invalid request. In issuing of this verdict the role of Mrs. Shariston as the attorney of this file and dossier is very clear.

We know perfectly that most human rights issues as well as juridical and humanitarian issues throughout the world are contaminated to the wrong policies and any humanitarian principles are trampled easily for the sake of political and economical interests and the only thing which has lost its value is humanitarian and human rights values.

We know also that sometimes listing and delisting of the terrorist organizations has been affected by the contaminated and wrong policies and politics and if everything was implemented and carried out justly ,there was no need to put this organization(pmoi) in the European and US terrorist list in long interval from each other, because the performance of this organization during past 30 years is not covert for anyone.

You are confronted with the organization which during the first years of the beginning of arm struggle had done hundreds assassinations on the streets ,so called revolutionary executions, and they have assassinated and slain more than hundreds of Iranian people by using bombs and automatic submachine guns ,in the pretext of their cooperation and involvement with the different Islamic republic organizations, on the streets and in mosques .

You are confronted with the organization ,which from 1981 till few years after the Kuwait war, has bombed and exploded governmental buildings and oil pipes and other places which as a result of that many innocent people have been killed and slain by them.

You are confronted with the organization which has implemented and carried out more than hundreds mortar attacks and missile operations on the streets of Tehran and other cities of Iran just few years before the fall of Saddam Hussein and they have targeted the buildings which both military personnel and ordinary innocent people ,like women and children, were in it.

You are confronted with the organization which has assassinated few American military advisers during the shah’s time in 70,s and had participated in hostage taking of American Embassy in Teheran ( they had a significant role in that operation which some video clips related to that event is available in YouTube).

You are confronted with the organization which its spiritual leader ,Massoud Rajavi, declared in official gathering that he will assassinate and slay the pmoi separated members and his critics on the streets of Europe if he does not succeed and fail in his cultic plans.

Honorable judges

You are on the position of judgment and many eyes are watching you. if one of those terrorist military operations happened and occurred in European cities , you would have silenced? Have not you condemned it as a terrorist act ?

Had not the leader of this organization , Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, declared self immolation order to her own members in the heart of Europe in 2003 and because of that order more than ten people set themselves on fire for her release? Do you know that simultaneously with Europe also in Ashraf Garrison the pmoi operatives had recruited for self immolation? Do not you think that these brutal and savage actions are not a terrorist danger for the future of Europe?

Each one of us has lost one or more members of our families during these 30 years and also we have sacrificed and spent many years of our lives in this organization to fight against Islamic republic … we know well that the brutal and bloody policies of Massoud Rajavi during past 30 years has been precisely against the peaceful struggle and demanding democracy of Iranian people . we know very well that if any person who has perpetrated many crimes ,he or she can not be punished or killed on the alley or street by the order and the will of some one else without going to the court of law and without any trial and official judgment and this brutal action be called as a revolutionary execution and they call it as a street trial . you as the professionals in your position in judicial and juridical affaires know very well that these kind of brutal actions are the clear and apparent breach of human rights rules. No one can be punished without the trial and substantiation of the crime but the leaders of pmoi are not committed to such international rules and they have not showed any remorse of their brutal and bloody past in nowhere.

You honorable judges know that we had been members of this cult in the past and forcibly we knew such actions ( specially in the cold war which was the era of arm struggles) as an legitimate and lawful action because we did not have any idea about the breach of human rights , juridical and lawful issues because our thoughts were formed by the things which our leaders were saying to us, but you in the free and democratic world and society knew that such actions do not have any lawful and juridical legitimacy and we expect you to review the past of this organization carefully one more time .

Do you know that colonel Sayad Shirazi was assassinated and killed right in front of the eyes of his child on the street by the direct order of pmoi leader ,Massoud Rajavi? Who had put this colonel on trial and sentenced him to be executed and killed without any court of law and any official verdict even if he had done many crimes ? In which court of law such verdict and maximum penalty, death by firing squad, has been issued? Do you accept that a criminal , any criminal , be executed or assassinated in front of his terrified eyes of his own child? This is just an example of hundreds assassinations that pmoi has done.

Most of the pmoi assassinations had happened on streets and inside the mosques . we do not judge about the crimes which had perpetrated by the people who were assassinated but we are talking about the way of handling those trials and the punishments . Do you know that inside of the mosques women and children were present and some of those innocent people also were wounded or killed by the assassins? what about those innocents, women and children, who were wounded and killed?

Some of us were present in the scuffles which happened after the Kuwait war in Iraq. many times the homes and the properties of the ordinary iraqi people were targeted in the cities such as Touz Khormatou and Soleymanbak and Kefri and women and children and elderly people got injured and they were crying and begging the pmoi operatives not to target their homes . Do not you think that such actions are terrorist act and crime against humanity?

Honorable judges

Do the leaders of this organization has changed their violent strategy and policy? if it is true where have they declared it officially? is their forcible disarmament the criteria of their change? If it is true why during past 2 years hundreds of the pmoi members who were equipped with hand made baton , club , archery and wooden shields were sent by Massoud Rajavi direct order to fight against Iraqi soldiers? why those pmoi members by the direct order of Massoud Rajavi throw rocks and pieces of iron and fireballs toward the elderly parents of those pmoi stranded members?

Do you ,as honorable judges ,have enough recognition of the leaders of this dangerous religious cult? Have you spoken with hundreds of separated members of this cult to find more vital facts about their internal relations?

There is no doubt that the politics may be contaminated to corruption and we hope that the European courts specially the European supreme court of justice will always be free of any politics But there is an ambiguity for us that for what reason the French government appeal has been rejected?

Do not you think that the leaders of this cult are terrorist so how do you call and see those terrorist actions which had been perpetrated by pmoi during past 30 years ? and if you think that the leadership of this cult has changed its strategy and behavior what is your criteria and how do you confirm it? Is Rajavi ready to say in the Press and the Media that he is remorseful of all terrorist actions that he ordered and he says officially that he is responsible and has made a mistake? If they do not want to say it , so with what criteria can you be completely confident and sure that after all these events and residing of Massoud Rajavi and some of pmoi operatives in Europe, again they do not begin their terrorist actions against their dissidents and critics?

We ,as the former members of this dangerous religious cult , have been witnessing of many terrorist and criminal actions which have been planned by Massoud and Maryam Rajavi and we are ready to be present at any court of law that you mention to testify as witnesses . Most of those crimes has occurred against the dissidents and critic members and those crimes have been covert unfortunately . many members have lost their lives in Ashraf Garrison either under torture or by committing suicide and self immolation and more than hundreds of those members were incarcerated either in Ashraf garrison or Iraqi prisons such as Abughrib prison ,just because they were against the pmoi internal ideological revolution. Many of those pmoi incarcerated members in Iraqi prisons were exchanged as prisoners of war (POW) with Islamic republic. All those suicides which happened inside Ashraf garrison were because of inhumane pressures which the pmoi leadership exerted upon them.

So how is it possible to go through of all those facts without scrutiny and investigation and just by false claims of pmoi leadership and its officials, give the verdict? What about all those victims of pmoi terrorist actions , have they been mentioned in your verdict? Do not you think that before any verdict ,it was better to talk with some of those victims and let them share their views and experiences about pmoi with you? Have you been informed that during current year many pmoi members escaped from Ashraf garrison and took refuge in United Nation and among them there were women of leadership council ? was it not better for you and your verdict to talk with them first who are the most valuable sources and witness of the pmoi internal relations?

We are eager to see justice to what extent in the supreme court of justice and other European courts what comes first? We hope that with this verdict( which is only in favor of pmoi leaders and it does not solve any problems of those stranded members who have been victims of the pmoi leadership’s terrorist and inhumane policies) the future of the European youth will not be affected by the sectarianism and dangerous terrorist actions which may happen by the rise of religious cults and sects on European soil.

We, the former members of this dangerous religious cult, are ready to help you as much as possible to inform you more about these dangerous religious cults because we do not want that European youth like us become victims of such cults which are capable of brainwashing and forcing them to set themselves on fire and commit suicide for the sake of cultic thoughts and ideology. Fortunately the Iranian informed and intelligent girls and boys have shown perfectly during the recent years that they have recognized utterly these kind of cults, consequently for their own safety and security, they keep their distance from them as much as possible for that reason Rajavi has lost his hope on Iranian youth and instead he has counted on European youth.

Open letter of the Iranian Pen Club to the European supreme court of justice

your confirmation regarding not to accept and recognize the pmoi( People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran) as a terrorist organization after the French government just and truth objection and appeal , there is no doubt that it is a very big juridical mistake and it seems that the European supreme court which the justice has been designated as its name , has trampled the name of justice in this case, and Iranian people will not forgive your mistake which it seems that is a political matter. Our reasons are as follows:

1. This organization( pmoi) from the beginning of its foundation has utilized the behavior of arm struggle as the main tool to gain the political power and since the Shah’s time , this organization has insisted on this behavior .

2. This organization, according to their own confirmation is the first organization which organized the suicide missions in the middle east and carried out those missions in Iran, the missions which became as pattern and sample for the terrorist organizations such as Al Qaida in Afghanistan and the other violent organizations in the middle east.

3. The pmoi by its leadership ,Massoud Rajavi in Iraq and Maryam Rajavi in Paris had begun its mortar attacks inside Iranian cities in 1987 ( 1376) which is the biggest and the most undeniable document and proof of their violent behavior against the ordinary Iranian residents , and they can not hide or deny any of those attacks as a result of tens of vital documents and proofs which are available.

4. The pmoi and its leadership in Iraq and in Paris has not declared yet officially and in any place by showing a reliable and clear document that they have set aside and abandon the arm struggle . the Iranian people’s mind and memory can not be fooled by the deceit and political play of the juridical authorities in Europe and by their deliberately evaluation of the Iranian as ignorant people which specially and practically the European supreme court of justice has done it in this case.

5. The symbol of arm and submachine gun as logo in their emblem since 40 years ago shows their violent thoughts and behavior which has not been changed yet.

Unfortunately you have reconfirmed the delisting of this organization( with the traits mentioned above) from the European union terrorist list and the Iranian people think that in any violent activity which this organization may implement perpetrate in future , the European supreme court of justice should see its share and role in it and they should sense its heavy burden on their conscience and this fact is not far from the Iranian people’s expectations.

As you know well that the Basque combatants in Spain recently according to an official statement declared their renunciation and abdication from terrorism and violence as a tool for gaining identity and political power and they declared it officially and openly and Spanish people and politicians will reevaluate the Basque combatants after their declaration.

During past years the Irish Liberation army also has chosen the political struggle as the main solution for reaching to its political objectives and as a result of that they disbanded their military wing. Today’s world move forward far from using political violence , and using sword and arm for exertion and indoctrination of the thoughts and beliefs on the people in the space era and 21 century is completely out of question .

If you as an important authority and justice seeker on the European soil has closed your eyes on pmoi terrorist activities and their mistakes , according to your heavy humane responsibilities ask this organization that if they truly believe in denunciation and banishment of the arm struggle as the main tool for compelling and the exertion of their political beliefs and also if they have abandoned the arm struggle for ever and like the civilized people throughout the world have accepted the political solutions to express their thoughts and beliefs and they are practically committed to it , they should declare it officially and openly for Iranian people and the people throughout the world and you should ask this organization to declare this transformation by an official statement . otherwise you should accept that you have been deceived by their false policies and their hired lawyers but their movement and activities are under vigilant Iranian people surveillance and they will not be deceived.

The bitter truth is that before of all the Iranian people have been paying the price of the terrorism and the institutionalized violence in mujahedin’s terrorist cult and this fact has begotten an irrecoverable and irreparable losses on Iran democracy path.

I , Mohammad Karami , had been a member of pmoi( People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran) since 1976.

In 1977, I got arrested by the S.A.V.A.K ( the Shah’s security service) and after a while I got released.

I got arrested in 1980 as a result of political activities in Iran and I was sentenced to death by Islamic Republic ,but fortunately I could escape from the Islamic Republic prison along with some of my friends . In 1984 as a result of my disagreements and objections with the policies of pmoi leadership, I got arrested for 6 months and during imprisonment I was under severe torture . During my membership in pmoi as a result of my objections against the dictatorship policies of the pmoi leadership , I got beaten up more than 40 times and I was put on trial many times. In the last two trial , I was sentenced to death by Massoud Rajavi himself. The French government appeal of the European Union verdict of 4 of December 2008 related to revoking terrorist label against pmoi, it was a just and correct request. The French government has a very good recognition of the pmoi activities which its headquarter based in Auvers-sur-Oise .The French government has distinguished perfectly that pmoi is a terrorist organization. For this reason Maryam Rajavi with other 160 pmoi operatives and officials along with a great amount of documents( such as 8 million euro which was inside a drawer of Maryam Rajavi’s worktable and many plans which pertained to their intention of attacking to places in Europe and occupying them) got arrested by French police on 17 June 2003, truly the US state department has listed them as a foreign terrorist organization.

I ,as a former member of pmoi who has almost 30 years record of service and membership in pmoi, had been witnessing many terrorist activities of pmoi such as the suppression and slaying of the Iraqi Kurds in Northern part of Iraq in 1991, suppression and slaying of Iraqi Shiae in Southern part of Iraq in 1991, slaying and killing of Iranian defenseless people, slaying of Iranian people in pretext of having beard ( the pmoi operatives were guessing that the people with beard were working for Islamic Republic government ), targeting the Iranian oil pipes with explosives , begetting and creating intimidation among ordinary people, suppressing and killing of the dissidents inside their relations , sending their dissidents to the notorious Iraqi prison , Abu ghrib, beating up their opposition and dissidents , issuing execution order to kill and assassinate the dissidents and separated members of pmoi ….

I am completely ready to participate in any international court of law which intend to investigate about the pmoi crimes and I am ready to stand as a reliable witness with 30 years record of service and membership in pmoi and testify about those crimes in that court of law . I am a victim of pmoi who has been beaten up and threatened many times by the pmoi operatives and supporters in Europe which its files and dossiers are accessible in police station.

Mujahedin Khalq Organization as a terrorist group

MEK remains on US FTO list after Camp Ashraf deal

In August I was one among several people who wrote about a well-funded lobbying campaign by the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) to get delisted from the US’s foreign terrorist organizations (FTO) list. The MEK is an exiled Iranian group that has killed US and Iranian citizens. It’s also described as a “cult” that has committed human rights abuses against its own members as documented by the Rand Corporation and Human Rights Watch.

Armed and supported by Saddam Hussein, the MEK helped him repress Iraqi Shias and Kurds and fought against Iran during the Iran-Iraq war. Many analysts including neoconservative Michael Rubin have urged against delisting, noting potential blowback and acknowledging that the group would not be able to implement regime change in Iran due to its unpopularity with most Iranians.

President Obama was put in a tough spot by the MEK’s lobbying blitz not only because of the political heavyweights that expressed differing degrees of endorsement after thousands were paid to them in “speaking fees“, but also because of the MEK’s dishonest merging of the humanitarian concerns at their Camp Ashraf base with their FTO listing. Many expected that the Obama administration would announce a decision in September after dragging its feet for over a year following a 2010 Court of Appeals rare order that the designation be reevaluated, but no final announcement has been made and to date the MEK remains FTO-listed.

Under increasing Iraqi pressure to relocate and from human rights organizations urging leader Maryam Rajavi to allow independent access to over 3,000 Iranians at the camp, many feared a humanitarian tragedy such as mass suicide. But progress has been made after the UN convinced Iraq to sign a memorandum of understanding to temporarily resettle the residents to a former US military base north of Baghdad. The Head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq Martin Kobler said relocation was voluntary.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Sunday that the temporary solution had the U.S’s “full support” and that the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) would be conducting refugee status determinations for the members “toward resettlement to third countries.”

She also stressed that for the initiative to be “successful”, the camp’s residents would have to give their “full support” and urged them to “work with the UN”–an indication that resistance is expected from the MEK’s avid supporters (many are believed to be held against their will).

While the majority of MEK members have never left the camp, Rajavi has been living in Paris where she has successfully lobbied the group off the UK and EU FTO lists. The whereabouts of her husband Masoud are unknown, but some suspect he’s inside the camp. It will be interesting to see whether any new information about him is disclosed and if Maryam Rajavi will ultimately relinquish her hold on the group’s members.

So far there have been no independent confirmations of a MEK claim that Iranian rockets struck their camp on Sunday. We’ll also have to wait and see whether the residents allow themselves to be relocated out of Iraq. The only thing that’s certain is that these people–especially those who have been lured and born into Camp Ashraf–deserve a better life.

The following is an excerpt from the RAND report (pg. 38-9) for those who want to understand the MEK better.

The MeK as a Cult

From its earliest days, the MeK had had tight social bonds, but these began to be transformed into something more sinister during the mid- 1980s after the group’s leaders and many of its members had relocated to Paris. There, Masoud Rajavi began to undertake what he called an “ideological revolution,” requiring a new regimen of activities—at first demanding increased study and devotion to the cause but soon expanding into near-religious devotion to the Rajavis (Masoud and his wife, Maryam), public self-deprecation sessions, mandatory divorce, celibacy,enforced separation from family and friends, and gender segregation.

Prior to establishing an alliance with Saddam, the MeK had been a popular organization. However, once it settled in Iraq and fought against Iranian forces in alliance with Saddam, the group incurred the ire of the Iranian people and, as a result, faced a shortfall in volunteers. Thus began a campaign of disingenuous recruiting. The MeK naturally sought out Iranian dissidents, but it also approached Iranian economic migrants in such countries as Turkey and the United Arab Emirates with false promises of employment, land, aid in applying for asylum in Western countries, and even marriage, to attract them to Iraq. Relatives of members were given free trips to visit the MeK’s camps. Most of these “recruits” were brought into Iraq illegally and then required to hand over their identity documents for “safekeeping.” Thus, they were effectively trapped.

Another recruiting tactic was arranged with the assistance of Saddam’s government. Iranian prisoners from the Iran-Iraq War were offered the choice of going to MeK camps and being repatriated or remaining in Iraqi prison camps. Hundreds of prisoners went to MeK camps, where they languished. No repatriation efforts were made.

For coalition forces, the MeK’s cult behavior and questionable recruiting practices are significant insofar as they affect both the daily operations at the camp and the strategic disposition options available to the group. The leadership is unlikely to cooperate with policies that would undermine its ability to exert direct control over its members. Indeed, Human Rights Watch reports that the MeK long ago instituted a complicated process to retain members who expressed a desire to leave, which included a “trial,” forced confessions of disloyalty, and even torture. Although this process has been modified since the group was consolidated at Camp Ashraf, would-be walkaways are still “debriefed” for days or even weeks while held in some form of solitary confinement, during which they are encouraged to change their minds.

Conversely, the long-term indoctrination and isolation experienced by MeK members are likely to have instilled an exaggerated sense of loyalty, causing them to reject offers to separate themselves from their leaders. This would apply in particular to repatriation to Iran, where the expectation of persecution has been dramatically instilled in their minds.

In a move that almost defies belief, is so brazen and hypocritical many will not believe it no matter how many State Department officials confirm it, the US has been guarding a terrorist training camp inside Iraq with US troops and is planning to relocated them, possibly in a freshly US Troops Guarded Terrorist MEK Camp in Iraq abandoned US military base in Iraq while D.C. lobbyists work feverishly to have them de-listed, armed, and sent to conduct terrorist operations in Iran.

MEK. Admittedly a terrorist organization, listed by the US State Department as being such, it is fully funded, armed, and backed by the United States, based in France and US-occupied Iraq, and allowed to conduct terrorist operations against the Iranian people. The “War on Terror” is a fraud.

Foreign Policy Magazine has reported in their article, “State Department scrambling to move the MEK — to a former U.S. military base?” fully admits that Mujahedeen e-Khalq (MEK) is a terrorist organization used by Saddam Hussein to attack Iran in the 80′s and was responsible for the death of US military personnel and civilians. Foreign Policy reports that efforts by the Iraqi Army to evict MEK has resulted in armed clashes.

Foreign Policy then reports the United Nations “Assistance Mission in Iraq” (UNAMI) is working with the US State Department to relocate the terrorists within Iraq and possibly at a US military base near Baghdad’s airport.

Despite being listed as a terrorist organization by the US State Department (#28 listed as “Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization”) its leadership is harbored in Paris, its rank and file harbored by US troops in Iraq, and the US State Department itself overseeing their continued existence and the continuation of their armed terrorist campaign. Foreign Policy also notes a huge lobbying movement in Washington working to de-list MEK as a terrorist organization, including:

Indeed, warmongering Islamophobist cheerleader Rudolph Giuliani is taking money from a genuine terrorist organization and lobbying the US government to have it removed from the US State Department list. Tom Ridge is also listed as coddling MEK terrorists, ironically after being named the first “Homeland Security Secretary” from 2003-2005. Lee Hamilton, the vice chairman of the 9/11 Commission, is perhaps the most alarming name listed, as it casts serious doubts over the objectivity, integrity, and veracity with which he conducted his “investigation” of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Though it isn’t money alone that motivates this eager throng of traitors to remove MEK from the US State Department Foreign Terrorist Organization list, it is their desire to see MEK worked with more closely, armed, trained, and sent into Iran, with open, rather than covert American support, just as Saddam had done decades ago to conduct a campaign of terror against the Iranian people.

MEK has been considered by the Fortune 500-funded Brookings Institution as a prime candidate for US-backing in an effort to undermine and remove the Iranian government. In Brookings’ 2009 report, “Which Path to Perisa?” it is stated:

“Perhaps the most prominent (and certainly the most controversial) opposition group that has attracted attention as a potential U.S. proxy is the NCRI (National Council of Resistance of Iran), the political movement established by the MEK (Mujahedin-e Khalq). Critics believe the group to be undemocratic and unpopular, and indeed anti-American.

In contrast, the group’s champions contend that the movement’s long-standing opposition to the Iranian regime and record of successful attacks on and intelligence-gathering operations against the regime make it worthy of U.S. support. They also argue that the group is no longer anti-American and question the merit of earlier accusations. Raymond Tanter, one of the group’s supporters in the United States, contends that the MEK and the NCRI are allies for regime change in Tehran and also act as a useful proxy for gathering intelligence. The MEK’s greatest intelligence coup was the provision of intelligence in 2002 that led to the discovery of a secret site in Iran for enriching uranium.

Despite its defenders’ claims, the MEK remains on the U.S. government list of foreign terrorist organizations. In the 1970s, the group killed three U.S. officers and three civilian contractors in Iran. During the 1979-1980 hostage crisis, the group praised the decision to take America hostages and Elaine Sciolino reported that while group leaders publicly condemned the 9/11 attacks, within the group celebrations were widespread.

Undeniably, the group has conducted terrorist attacks—often excused by the MEK’s advocates because they are directed against the Iranian government. For example, in 1981, the group bombed the headquarters of the Islamic Republic Party, which was then the clerical leadership’s main political organization, killing an estimated 70 senior officials. More recently, the group has claimed credit for over a dozen mortar attacks, assassinations, and other assaults on Iranian civilian and military targets between 1998 and 2001. At the very least, to work more closely with the group (at least in an overt manner), Washington would need to remove it from the list of foreign terrorist organizations.” page 117-118 of “Which Path to Persia?” Brookings Institution, 2009

Readers may also be shocked to find out that not only has this been proposed, but long ago approved. This was revealed in Seymour Hersh’s 2008 New Yorker article “Preparing the Battlefield,” which stated:

“The M.E.K. has been on the State Department’s terrorist list for more than a decade, yet in recent years the group has received arms and intelligence, directly or indirectly, from the United States. Some of the newly authorized covert funds, the Pentagon consultant told me, may well end up in M.E.K. coffers. “The new task force will work with the M.E.K. The Administration is desperate for results.” He added, “The M.E.K. has no C.P.A. auditing the books, and its leaders are thought to have been lining their pockets for years. If people only knew what the M.E.K. is getting, and how much is going to its bank accounts—and yet it is almost useless for the purposes the Administration intends.”

And as moves are being made to get MEK de-listed as a terrorist organization by the US State Department so that even more aid can be rendered to this admitted terrorist organization, Seymore Hersh in an NPR interview, also claims that select MEK members have already received training in the US.

Quite clearly this reveals that not only is the “War on Terror” an absolute fraud, but so are the politicians, policy wonks, and military “leaders” who have promoted it, pinned medals on their own chests for “fighting” it, and have made immense fortunes and power grabs while burying the American people in unprecedented debt, tyranny, and economic catastrophe in the process. Let’s not forget the thousands of dead US troops duped into fighting this war and the hundreds of thousands maimed and broken, both physically and mentally, for what was essentially a gimmick to justify ravaging and looting the Middle East – a campaign that is still ongoing.

And while the new gimmick is utilizing terrorist groups like MEK or Libya’s LIFG to sow violence within a target country and then send NATO to “rescue” them from the nation’s attempt to defend itself, the “terrorist” card is still in play regarding Iran. It is clear then, that America’s greatest threat is its own “leadership,” bought and paid for by Wall Street and London’s corporate-financier interests and pursuing their agenda at the cost of the rest of humanity. We must identify these interests, boycott them out of business, and replace them entirely with local, pragmatic solutions.

The New York Times reports: At a time of partisan gridlock in the capital, one obscure cause has drawn a stellar list of supporters from both parties and the last two administrations, including a dozen former top national security officials.

That alone would be unusual. What makes it astonishing is the object of their attention: a fringe Iranian opposition group, long an ally of Saddam Hussein, that is designated as a terrorist organization under United States law and described by State Department officials as a repressive cult despised by most Iranians and Iraqis.

The extraordinary lobbying effort to reverse the terrorist designation of the group, the Mujahedeen Khalq, or People’s Mujahedeen, has won the support of two former C.I.A. directors, R. James Woolsey and Porter J. Goss; a former F.B.I. director, Louis J. Freeh; a former attorney general, Michael B. Mukasey; President George W. Bush’s first homeland security chief, Tom Ridge; President Obama’s first national security adviser, Gen. James L. Jones; big-name Republicans like the former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Democrats like the former Vermont governor Howard Dean; and even the former top counterterrorism official of the State Department, Dell L. Dailey, who argued unsuccessfully for ending the terrorist label while in office.

The American advocates have been well paid, hired through their speaking agencies and collecting fees of $10,000 to $50,000 for speeches on behalf of the Iranian group. Some have been flown to Paris, Berlin and Brussels for appearances.

Tom Ridge expresses the sentiment and rationale shared by most of the MEK’s Washington supporters: the enemy of my enemy is my friend. No doubt the MEK itself used the same reasoning when aligning itself with Saddam Hussein (as did the U.S.). For the MEK’s current allies in Washington it apparently matters little that the organization actually has a long history of befriending America’s enemies and opposing America’s friends — but maybe that says more about the capricious nature of American friendship than it says about the MEK.

Maybe the solution is not the removal of the MEK from the State Department’s list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations. Instead, the U.S. government can simply start designating countries and organizations as “Enemies” and “Friends” and then at the beginning of the springtime awards season, before the Oscars, there can be a televised event where the president hands out awards and opprobrium to this year’s winners in each category.

As far as what might be the implications for Iran (apart from continuation of the current campaign of terrorism targeting Iranian scientists), there is one curious dimension to the support the MEK now enjoys in Washington: the defining event in modern US-Iranian relations — the 1979 takeover of the US embassy in Tehran — turns out not to have been so unforgivable as it is generally portrayed.

“MEK members participated in and supported the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and … the MEK later argued against the early release the American hostages,” says the State Department. But let’s not dwell on the past, says Woolsey, Ridge et al.

On the other hand, for those who retain an interest in the past and the State Department’s description of the MEK’s activities, here it is:

The group’s worldwide campaign against the Iranian government uses propaganda and terrorism to achieve its objectives. During the 1970s, the MEK staged terrorist attacks inside Iran and killed several U.S. military personnel and civilians working on defense projects in Tehran. In 1972, the MEK set off bombs in Tehran at the U.S. Information Service office (part of the U.S. Embassy), the Iran-American Society, and the offices of several U.S. companies to protest the visit of President Nixon to Iran. In 1973, the MEK assassinated the deputy chief of the U.S. Military Mission in Tehran and bombed several businesses, including Shell Oil. In 1974, the MEK set off bombs in Tehran at the offices of U.S. companies to protest the visit of then U.S. Secretary of State Kissinger. In 1975, the MEK assassinated two U.S. military officers who were members of the U.S. Military Assistance Advisory Group in Tehran. In 1976, the MEK assassinated two U.S. citizens who were employees of Rockwell International in Tehran. In 1979, the group claimed responsibility for the murder of an American Texaco executive. Though denied by the MEK, analysis based on eyewitness accounts and MEK documents demonstrates that MEK members participated in and supported the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and that the MEK later argued against the early release the American hostages. The MEK also provided personnel to guard and defend the site of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, following the takeover of the Embassy.

In 1981, MEK leadership attempted to overthrow the newly installed Islamic regime; Iranian security forces subsequently initiated a crackdown on the group. The MEK instigated a bombing campaign, including an attack against the head office of the Islamic Republic Party and the Prime Minister’s office, which killed some 70 high-ranking Iranian officials, including Chief Justice Ayatollah Mohammad Beheshti, President Mohammad-Ali Rajaei, and Prime Minister Mohammad-Javad Bahonar. These attacks resulted in an expanded Iranian government crackdown that forced MEK leaders to flee to France. For five years, the MEK continued to wage its terrorist campaign from its Paris headquarters. Expelled by France in 1986, MEK leaders turned to Saddam Hussein’s regime for basing, financial support, and training. Near the end of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq War, Baghdad armed the MEK with heavy military equipment and deployed thousands of MEK fighters in suicidal, mass wave attacks against Iranian forces.

The MEK’s relationship with the former Iraqi regime continued through the 1990s. In 1991, the group reportedly assisted the Iraqi Republican Guard’s bloody crackdown on Iraqi Shia and Kurds who rose up against Saddam Hussein’s regime. In April 1992, the MEK conducted near-simultaneous attacks on Iranian embassies and consular missions in 13 countries, including against the Iranian mission to the United Nations in New York, demonstrating the group’s ability to mount large-scale operations overseas. In June 1998, the MEK was implicated in a series of bombing and mortar attacks in Iran that killed at least 15 and injured several others. The MEK also assassinated the former Iranian Minister of Prisons in 1998. In April 1999, the MEK targeted key Iranian military officers and assassinated the deputy chief of the Iranian Armed Forces General Staff, Brigadier General Ali Sayyaad Shirazi.

In April 2000, the MEK attempted to assassinate the commander of the Nasr Headquarters, Tehran’s interagency board responsible for coordinating policies on Iraq. The pace of anti-Iranian operations increased during “Operation Great Bahman” in February 2000, when the group launched a dozen attacks against Iran. One attack included a mortar attack against a major Iranian leadership complex in Tehran that housed the offices of the Supreme Leader and the President. The attack killed one person and injured six other individuals. In March 2000, the MEK launched mortars into a residential district in Tehran, injuring four people and damaging property. In 2000 and 2001, the MEK was involved in regular mortar attacks and hit-and-run raids against Iranian military and law enforcement personnel, as well as government buildings near the Iran-Iraq border. Following an initial Coalition bombardment of the MEK’s facilities in Iraq at the outset of Operation Iraqi Freedom, MEK leadership negotiated a cease-fire with Coalition Forces and surrendered their heavy-arms to Coalition control. Since 2003, roughly 3,400 MEK members have been encamped at Ashraf in Iraq.

In 2003, French authorities arrested 160 MEK members at operational bases they believed the MEK was using to coordinate financing and planning for terrorist attacks. Upon the arrest of MEK leader Maryam Rajavi, MEK members took to Paris’ streets and engaged in self-immolation. French authorities eventually released Rajavi.
