Baghdad, 8 July 2013 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. 
Martin Kobler, welcomed the relocation of a first group of seven Camp Liberty residents to Germany today.
“These are the first of the approximately 100 residents Germany has agreed to accept for relocation,” Mr. Kobler said. “I thank the Government of Germany for offering a new home to these persons in need of international protection.”
UNHCR chief welcomes Albanian offer of humanitarian admission for 200 residents of Camp Hurriya, Iraq
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres, on Monday welcomed an offer by the Albanian Government to grant humanitarian admission for 210 residents from Camp Hurriya in Iraq to Albania.
The camp has seen a recent deterioration of the security situation of its residents, with a mortar attack on the camp on February 9th killing eight and wounding dozens, with subsequent threats made against the residents.
Guterres expressed gratitude to the Albanian government saying “This generous offer is a demonstration of international solidarity and burden sharing for a vulnerable population”. He strongly encouraged other”countries to follow Albania’s lead and offer solutions for the camp residents that enable them to relocate outside of Iraq”.
He said “The residents of Camp Hurriya urgently need solutions to relocate out of Iraq”. And he expressed the hope that they”welcome the offer and cooperate to ensure the departure of this important number of people”.
Camp Hurriya, also known as Camp Liberty, has over 3000 residents.

Seventy-one members of an exiled Iranian opposition group based at a camp near Baghdad have been relocated to Albania, the UN said Saturday, a week after the camp suffered deadly mortar attacks.
The resettlement is the latest in protracted efforts by the UN to move the around 3,000 members of the former rebel People’s Mujahedeen at Camp Liberty, on Baghdad’s outskirts, outside of Iraq.
“A total of 71 men and women now have safely arrived in Albania and have benefited from the government of Albania’s offer to accept 210 of the camp’s residents,” UN special envoy to Iraq Martin Kobler said in a statement.
Kobler said that Germany had also offered to accept around 100 residents, and added that the deadly attack on Camp Liberty a week ago had “once again shown how important it is to relocate the residents to third countries as quickly as possible.”
On June 15, two camp residents were killed by a series of mortar rounds which hit Camp Liberty, a former American military base that now houses the Iranian exiles, in the second such attack this year.
At Iraq’s insistence, the exiles were moved to Camp Liberty late last year from Camp Ashraf, near the Iranian border, where the People’s Mujahedeen set up base in the 1980s.
Ashraf was the base that now-executed dictator Saddam Hussein allowed the group to establish in Diyala province during Iraq’s eight-year war with Iran.
The People’s Mujahedeen was founded in the 1960s to oppose the shah of Iran, and after the 1979 Islamic revolution that ousted him it took up arms against Iran’s clerical rulers.
It says it has now laid down its weapons and is working to overthrow the Islamic regime in Iran by peaceful means.
Britain struck the group off its terror blacklist in June 2008, followed by the European Union as a whole in 2009 and the United States in September last year.
Baghdad has urged greater cooperation from the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) to remove Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) terrorists from the country.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki made the call on Thursday during a meeting with the outgoing head of the UNAMI, Martin Kobler, at the premier’s office in Baghdad.
Maliki called on the UN mission to “focus on the problem of the MKO … to apply the agreement concluded in this regard,” the prime minister’s office said in a statement.
The MKO — listed as a terrorist organization by much of the international community — fled Iran in 1986 for Iraq, where it enjoyed the support of Iraq’s executed dictator Saddam Hussein, and set up its camp near the Iranian border.
The group is notorious for carrying out numerous acts of terror against Iranian civilians and officials, involvement in the bloody repression of the 1991 Shia Muslims in southern Iraq, and the massacre of Iraqi Kurds in the country’s north under Saddam.
In December 2011, the United Nations and Baghdad agreed to relocate some 3,000 MKO members from Camp New Iraq, formerly known as Camp Ashraf, in Diyala Province to Camp Liberty — a former US military base near Baghdad International Airport.
Tehran has repeatedly called on the Iraqi government to expel the terrorist group, but the US has been blocking the expulsion by pressuring the Iraqi government.
Another group of 14 Camp Liberty residents in Iraq have relocated to Albania on Tuesday, June 18, 2013.
This is the third group in a series of planned moves to relocate Camp Liberty [Temporary transit Location] residents to Albania.
The third group comprised 14 MKO members: 12 Men and 2 women.

On May 31, thirty residents of Camp Hurriya departed Iraq for permanent relocation in Albania. The United States commends the Government of Albania’s generous offer to accept up to 210 former Camp Hurriya residents. This marks the second in a series of planned moves to relocate Camp Hurriya residents to Albania. Albania continues to be a strong partner of the United States in contributing to peace and stability in Iraq.
The United States also reiterates its call to the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) to cooperate fully with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) process to relocate Camp Hurriya residents outside of Iraq as expeditiously as possible. The permanent relocation of residents is essential to ensure the safety and security of residents, especially following the February 9 terrorist attack that took eight lives.
The MEK leadership has the responsibility to facilitate the full and immediate participation of residents in interview and counseling processes required by the UNHCR. Residents of Camp Hurriya are entitled to unimpeded and private access to UN human rights monitors. The MEK leadership has an obligation to ensure residents are able to engage openly and freely with UN human rights monitors, UNHCR personnel and UNAMI representatives.
The United States reaffirms its strong support for the work of UNHCR, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), and especially the tireless work of UNAMI Special Representative of the Secretary General Martin Kobler, to assist and resettle Camp Hurriya residents.
The safety and security of Camp Hurriya residents remain an utmost concern. Security requirements to protect residents must be fulfilled in accordance with the December 25, 2011 Memorandum of Understanding between the United Nations and the Government of Iraq.

It was a pleasure to hear of the relocation of 14 residents of Camp Liberty, Iraq to your country. These individuals were the first group of the 210 who are supposed to be received as refugees in your territory after they could manage to leave Camp Liberty.
Appreciating the generous humanitarian act of your state, we should be pleased to inform you that over a year after signing a memorandum of understanding between the UN, the US and the Mujahedin Khalq Organization, physical and mental condition of liberty residents is deteriorating every day. As an NGO that has been merely founded to help the families of the MKO members in order to contact their loved ones, we find it our duty to work for soothing the worries of these suffering families whose beloved children have been away from their mother land for years. We might be able to ease the pains they bore during these years of separation. Their demand is the minimum basic right of a human.

Serious concerns over heightened level of violence in Iraq – UN Envoy tells European Parliament
Baghdad, 30 May 2013 – On 29 May, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for 
Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Martin Kobler, briefed the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament (AFET) on the current developments in Iraq.
In his exchange of views with the parliamentarians, Mr. Kobler expressed serious concerns over the heightened level of violence in Iraq and the danger that the country falls back into sectarian strife, if decisive action is not taken by its political leaders. “The country stands at a crossroads,” the UN Envoy said, calling for a stronger EU role in dealing with the developments unfolding in the country, and for increased interaction with the Iraqi Council of Representatives.
Mr. Kobler also briefed AFET on UNAMI’s efforts to resettle the former residents of Camp Ashraf to third countries. He deplored the lack of cooperation of the residents and of their leadership with the UNHCR and UN monitors, and urged them to accept concrete resettlement offers. Stressing that “resettlement to safe countries is the only durable option”, he called again on European Union member states to accept former Camp Ashraf residents into their countries.

First of all I should congratulate the prisoners [held in the MKO] and their families on the departure of the first group of hostages held in Iraq to Albania.
It is known to everyone that heavy efforts were made by the UN and other international bodies as well as enduring families of the residents – who tolerated the cold and heat in Iraq– and also former members of the MKO. The negotiations between UN, Iraqi government and third countries to convince other states of the world to accept captives of the MKO resulted in the departure of 14 people. Besides, the interviews and illuminating posts by former members helped neutralize the tactics of the MKO leaders who intended to impose their forceful stay on Iraqi people and government so that they could take advantage of their stay in Iraq and by gradually making our friends be killed in their camps they could run their propaganda.
It was long ago that Albanian Government offered to accept 210 Liberty residents. If the group leaders had agreed with offer immediately, other residents of the camp would have been relieved about their departure and the relocation process would have been accelerated. Quite the reverse, the MKO leaders urged on their stay in Iraq and put accusations on special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Martin Kobler and even his wife [German ambassador in Iraq] in their efforts to prolong and stabilize to their stay in Iraq; Massoud Rajavi even declared the departure from Iraq as taboo. His funny sentence did not only include the departure from Iraq but also boycotted departure from the organization.
Anyway, the Taboo of leaving the MKO has been broken. A number of the members could reach the outside world where they can see the wonders of the world they had been deprived from for about three decades. The vital thing about these people is that they should never let the MKO dominate them and exploit them again. They should decide for their future with their own free will not under the will of the MKO leaders who left them in the deserts of Iraq and fled to Europe to enjoy the best life and comfort there.
Certainly, the gradual departure of the MKO members from Iraq is the start of the group collapse. We should wait and see what’s coming.

News received from inside Camp Liberty, the base of Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization in Iraq where 3400 
members are located, indicates that unrest and discontentment is growing fast among the residents and that some, against the direct instruction of the cult, openly express their desire to go to a third country. However many people are afraid to approach the international observers because the cult has ideologically banned all contact with outsiders, which it has labeled as ‘crossing the red line’.
The departure of 14 individuals from Camp Liberty to Albania shows that apparently the process of moving out of Iraq has started. Nevertheless it is not clear how long such a slow procedure will take to reach its final stage.
Rajavi previously announced to his followers that they would not be moved from Iraq. Rajavi’s ideal is to remain in Iraq under the same conditions he used to enjoy in the time of Saddam Hussein. Or, if he is forced to take his followers out of Iraq, he prefers to move them all together to one location similar to Ashraf Garrison.
Perhaps Rajavi has come to the conclusion that his desires are no longer tolerated and therefore one can presume that the process of moving everyone individually to third countries is taking place. Thus it could be said that what Rajavi had feared most is now happening.
Massoud Rajavi gave some audio conferences via the internet for the inhabitants of the camp a couple of months ago. In these sessions he tried to give hope to his followers and also to terrify them. He gave some political analyses relating to the situation in Syria and then concluded that the Iranian regime would soon be toppled and they would all go to a free Iran.
In these hearings he frankly stated that anyone leaving the organization would suffer both in this world as well as in eternity. He of course did not mention the fact that those who left his cult are now in a much better situation and those still in the camp who are suffering the most. It is worth saying that the average age of the residents is 50 years old, of which most are in poor health and who have many mental and physical problems. These people did not gain much neither in their lives nor with their struggle. They have wasted their lives for the narcissistic desires of Rajavi and have been forced to commit all sorts of betrayal and crimes against their country and their people.
The other point Rajavi mentioned was: “the atmosphere of Camp Liberty is poisonous and deadly, and it must soon be subjected to detoxification”. Rajavi then explained that he refers to the presence of the UN monitors and the ICRC officials as well as the Iraqis. He means that they have poisoned the minds of the members by connecting them to the outside world and giving them hope for a life outside the organization which neutralizes the effects of his brainwashing. He clearly asked his followers not to let them inside the camp. It should be noted by the international observers that Rajavi describes them as poison which causes illness and which therefore should be wiped out immediately.
In these meetings Rajavi clearly stated: “as your spiritual leader I vow that the blood of anyone trying to leave us must be shed”. Then Rajavi pointed out that there is no sin worse than leaving his cult and the person who does so must be most severely punished. This should be noted with all seriousness by the western countries. One can ask what more a man should say to reveal his murderous thoughts.
We also know that in Europe the MEK forces have been instructed to tackle the opponents by all means, even physically. In previous years Rajavi has vowed that in case his cult is dismantled, those still loyal to him must eliminate those who have left the organization.
Sahar Family Foundation, while welcoming the departure, although small in number, of residents out of Iraq, is demanding that the process be speeded up and the victims and hostages of Rajavi are moved to a place where they are able to have contact with the outside world, particularly with their families. From there they can decide freely and sensibly about their destinies. Those responsible in this respect must put all political obligations aside and give more acceleration and momentum to the action.
